I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

This book is awesome, even though the recipes are very heavy in animal products and I have hot eaten red meat in over 40 years. I am a MD and have practiced medicine for over 48 years. Her science is exceptionally profound and adds to all of my prior reading. I have read over 300 books in the last three years, all pertaining to this subject. If I had to pick one book this would be it. I can make my own recipes, without all the meat, which is not good. Her description of the cascading free radical damage to the unprotected brain and eyes is of particularly great significance and usefulness in understanding the explosive incidence of dementia in the US population. I cannot express how much I appreciate her work. I am 86 years old, in good health and work every day, including as the caregiver for my wife for the last 8 years. This is a most fascinating book and I have reads scores of books on nutrition. Dr. Shanahan makes so many great points that are NEVER discussed or even known by 99.9999% of MDs. I should know as I am an MD. Nutrition is blown off by the medical establishment and medical schools as being totally irrelevant to health. Nothing is further from the truth. I agree with the doctor on almost everything but since I have been on a ketogenic diet for years and actually feel and look younger than I did 10 years ago, I think the upper limit of carbohydrate intake should be no more than 50 gms/day. The doctor addresses so many issues in this book. An amazing discussion on the spacing of children and a mother's nutrition is right on. She states that having kids in rapid succession is deleterious to the looks, brains, and health of the subsequent child. No obstetrician or family medicine doctor will ever tell you this since they are oblivious and do not know this. Of course there are exceptions to any rule but in general I believe this is true. I have pondered this idea regarding my own family and birth order. She also points out how "normal" levels of cholesterol and LDL are constantly lowered by the medical system in order to benefit big pharma and get as many people as possible on statins. Anyone who has really studied cholesterol/LDL knows this is not the culprit of cardiovascular disease but carbohydrate consumption that leads to hyperinsulinemia and then to insulin resistance which causes many diseases. This is an amazing and very interesting book! If everyone practiced the teachings in this book miraculous improvement in health would be obtained.

I've been researching and learning about health for over 50 years and this is the best and most comprehensive book I've ever found on the subject of nutrition and health in general. The book is well written and interesting--not dry, not boring. I'm the kind of person that needs to know "why," it's not enough to tell me to do something without knowing why. In the case of health issues it is often times that the explanation is too technical to be understood by a layperson. Not so with this book. I love the information concerning cultures (health and long-lived) from around the globe. Combined with brief overviews of how our Paleo ancestors ate helps to understand how the typical American diet has devolved into a fast-food culture of easy and fast and how that is killing us. If you were alive in the 50s, you may remember that illness and disease were not widespread as they are today. Both sets of my grandparents lived into their 90s without having ANY hospital stays. One grandmother had 12 children and the other 4. They were bright and alert--no signs of dementia or alzheimers either. My great grandmother passed at 97, after her husband died, she lived alone and cooked, cleaned, and had a garden until the end. I have offered this detail for the benefit of the younger readers who have seen a very different picture of health in the general population of this country. We all pretty much know that sugar is detrimental to health and offers no nutrition or food value whatsoever, but I learned from "Deep Nutrition" that vegetable oil is poison and is a major cause of the deterioration of our brains. I could go on and on, but I know people are busy. This is a fabulous book for those that are looking for in-depth answers to their health issues and what to do to heal from years of bad eating habits. I would give it ten stars if that were possible.

I'm sure I have read about 100 diet and health books, this is the first I have read that rather than recommending we balance our omega 6 intake, explained the chemical reactions on a molecular level that takes place when we ingest vegetable oil. I am completely convinced, and I will never eat vegetable oil again. I have also cut my sugar way down, but it was a little more difficult.

Big read, but super detailed and as much an anthropological story as a nutritional one. Fascinating explanation of the science and how our body works...so much more in here than just nutrition advice. Anyone that's interested in how humans form the way they do and how our bodies work will get way more than their money's worth from Deep Nutrition. This is a book I would gift to anyone I care about in hopes they'd adapt their food choices to improve their health and quality of life.

In my opinion the book is an excellent work to everyone who wants to begin in the QA and software Testing area. Today the QA and testing are vital phases in the Software Engineering discipline, that assures the wished quality in the software. I really consider the book as an important reference.

This tale introduces the Fibonacci sequence in a simplistic tale which can be fascinating to children and adults. These numbers are also mentioned again briefly on a back page as in the number of petals in a daisy, etc. inviting more investigation into nature. Some children may not learn about this until they study higher math, if in fact they do, as well as other associated principles. Fibonacci was a great Italian mathmatician.

Fun way to studythe Fibonacci process.

This is a delightful book that introduces the idea of the Fibonacci sequence to children.

I loved this book. On it's own it's a fun story with great illustrations, but throw in the educational content and it is amazing. What a fun way to make Fibonacci accessible to children. I am a big fan of "living math" books and this is a must have for any living math library.

McCallum does an excellent job of blending an entertaining children's story with the Fibonacci pattern. Rabbits Rabbits Everywhere keeps your mind working from beginning to end. It's a fascinating, fun math theory tale with rich illustration children will read again and again. Destined to be in every classroom!

I am teaching the Fibonacci Sequence to students, and this was a great story and visual. I am teaching this to third graders, and this story helped them understand Fibonacci's rabbit question.

I don't remember why I ordered this, but I'm quite thankful I did. It's such a joyous piece of literature.

One of the pages came out the first time I read it. It's good for an extension for lessons on patters for upper elementary.
