This is one of the best fermentation books out there! The other best book on lacto-fermentation is Fermented Vegetables, by Kirsten and Christopher Shockey. This book is a joy to read. In the book it talks about the how to, science and history of lacto-fermentation. And at the authors website "ferment.works" they have really awesome customer service! I have already made four different types of ferments: I made the Spicy Carrot And Lime Salad ferment, Horseradish Mustard ferment, Spicy Onion-Mango Ferment, Turmeric Golden Beet Salad ferment, and all of them were VERY delicious! I Would highly recommend this book!

This book is the REAL deal. Every recipe is a winner, there are tips throughout the book to insure you success. The photography is so realistic it makes the food jump off page. My favorite recips are the Thai - inspired Green Bean Relish and the Green Bean Kimchi. Buy the book and get your ferment on

I'm a spicy food blogger and when I began to research fermenting my copious chili pepper harvest, this is one of the first books I came across. It quickly became my "go-to" book for fermenting. I have learned so much from this book. It has a place on my desk at all times. The authors have outdone themselves with this work. Highly recommended.

I stayed up hours late just to read this thing cover to cover like a regular book, in fascination. And I'm not much of a cookbook fan normally. It's interesting, humorous, informative, creative, and really brings home not only a wide variety of recipes for fermenting, but the underlying point: that it's an infinite canvas for anybody to play with, with just a few components and ingredients and some imagination. It's got lots of brief notes in passing that seem like valuable tidbits for someone new to fermenting (like me). Totally worth it!

This is a very informative book. The authors mix a variety of information, recipes and personal experiences to make the book not only useful, but enjoyable to read. It is evident that the Shockeys have a passion for making fermented foods, and they think outside of the box and try new things. Some worked for them, and some didn't, but it helps me as I can avoid some pitfalls if I learn from others experiences. It is much more than just a recipe book. This is the second book on fermenting that I have by the Shockeys and both have been great.

I just got this book after waiting for it a long time. I absolutely love what I see so far. Lots of great ideas. Can't wait to get started. I love fermenting foods, and although not everyone love HOT stuff, I do. I see so many ways to enhance my meals with this ferments.

This is a great book for beginning fermenters like myself with lots of information and the why's and hows for the basics as well as some great recipe ideas for uses. I've made several items and some of the recipes which use them so I highly recommend it to fermenters at all stages.

This is one of my favorite fermenting books. The Shockeys know their stuff. All the recipes I’ve made so far have been fantastic, but my favorite is the carrot habanero hot sauce - perfect to make for gifts and so good.

I bought this book many, many years ago with every intention of reading it soon thereafter, but I had heard such good things about it that I wanted to wait until I had enough free time set aside to be able to fully savor it without any distractions. So, I waited. And I waited. And I kept on waiting, because I never could seem to find that ideal stretch of distraction-free time I was saving it for. All the while, it has been sitting on a shelf collecting dust. But a few weeks ago, while doing some much-needed spring cleaning, I came across the book and decided that I had put off reading it long enough. So, in spite of the fact that I never really did find the perfect time to read it, I finally did manage to get it read. My only regret is that I waited so long. It is an excellent book that really does live up to all the hype.'The Metaphysical Club' is the biography of four men and an idea. The four men are the legal scholar Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (who would later become one of the most celebrated justices ever to sit on the United States Supreme Court), the psychologist and philosopher William James, the polymath Charles Sanders Peirce (pronounced "purse"), and the philosopher and social reformer John Dewey. The idea, of course, is Pragmatism.Pragmatism is an innovative approach to doing philosophy that was developed by Holmes, James, Peirce, and Dewey (with contributions from numerous others, of course) in the period between the American Civil War and the First World War. Pragmatism is by far the most influential school of philosophical thought ever to come out of the United States, and it has been argued that Pragmatism reflects the American way of thinking better than any other philosophical movement. This is why Pragmatism has come to be treated as virtually synonymous with "American philosophy."Pragmatism is often misunderstood, in large part because we tend to use the word "pragmatism" to mean practical-mindedness or expediency. Well, Pragmatism can certainly be seen as a practical-minded or expedient approach to doing philosophy, but it is important to keep in mind that Pragmatism (at least in the philosophical sense of the word) is specifically an approach to doing philosophy—it is not really about practical-mindedness or expediency in everyday affairs. In other words, the goal of Pragmatist philosophers is not to preach the virtues of practical living; it is to do philosophy in a particular way. (Here, I am using the word "philosophy" in a fairly broad sense to mean the serious, reasoned contemplation of ideas and their implications; so this would include not only the academic discipline of philosophy, but most other fields of scholarship as well, plus at least a few professions outside of academia, the most notable being the field of law.) Pragmatism is about taking a particular approach to the contemplation of ideas—an approach that Pragmatists consider to be more practical-minded than most of the alternative approaches that have been tried over the centuries.William James, in his famous series of lectures on Pragmatism in 1906-07 (which he later published in book form), illustrated the Pragmatist approach to thinking with this amusing anecdote:"Some years ago, being with a camping party in the mountains, I returned from a solitary ramble to find everyone engaged in a ferocious metaphysical dispute. The corpus of the dispute was a squirrel—a live squirrel supposed to be clinging to one side of a tree-trunk; while over against the tree's opposite side a human being was imagined to stand. This human witness tries to get sight of the squirrel by moving rapidly round the tree, but no matter how fast he goes, the squirrel moves as fast in the opposite direction, and always keeps the tree between himself and the man, so that never a glimpse of him is caught. The resultant metaphysical problem now is this: DOES THE MAN GO ROUND THE SQUIRREL OR NOT? He goes round the tree, sure enough, and the squirrel is on the tree; but does he go round the squirrel? In the unlimited leisure of the wilderness, discussion had been worn threadbare. Everyone had taken sides, and was obstinate; and the numbers on both sides were even. Each side, when I appeared, therefore appealed to me to make it a majority. Mindful of the scholastic adage that whenever you meet a contradiction you must make a distinction, I immediately sought and found one, as follows: 'Which party is right,' I said, 'depends on what you PRACTICALLY MEAN by "going round" the squirrel. If you mean passing from the north of him to the east, then to the south, then to the west, and then to the north of him again, obviously the man does go round him, for he occupies these successive positions. But if on the contrary you mean being first in front of him, then on the right of him, then behind him, then on his left, and finally in front again, it is quite as obvious that the man fails to go round him, for by the compensating movements the squirrel makes, he keeps his belly turned towards the man all the time, and his back turned away. Make the distinction, and there is no occasion for any farther dispute. You are both right and both wrong according as you conceive the verb "to go round" in one practical fashion or the other.' "While this anecdote cleverly illustrates the sort of practical-minded approach that Pragmatists like to take when thinking about ideas (in this case, the rather trivial idea of what it means "to go round" a squirrel), this illustration only scratches the surface of what philosophical Pragmatism is all about, and you'll need to do quite a bit of reading on the subject (or take a course in American philosophy) in order to fully understand how Pragmatists do philosophy.'The Metaphysical Club' is actually a pretty good place to begin. It won't teach you everything you need to know about the subject, but it will give you a pretty good sense of what Pragmatism is all about. More importantly, you will learn a great deal about how Pragmatism came to be. You will learn about the men and women who contributed, directly or indirectly, to its development—in particular, about the four men who are most directly responsible for bringing us Pragmatism: Wendell Holmes, William James, Charles Peirce, and John Dewey. You'll learn about how their lives and experiences—and the most important and controversial issues of their day—helped shape their ways of thinking. You'll learn about how the history of Pragmatism is connected to the troubled history of race relations in America as well as to the growing tension between science and religion that could be seen in the decades after the publication of Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species'. Understanding the historical context and intellectual climate in which Pragmatism developed will give you a better sense of what Pragmatism is really all about.But this book is about so much more than just Pragmatism. Likewise, it is about so much more than just the lives and the intellectual accomplishments of Holmes, James, Peirce, and Dewey—who are arguably the four most important American thinkers of the period between the end of the Civil War the end of World War I (and in the case of Holmes and Dewey, well after the end of World War I). Yes, it is a biography of these four men and the idea they gave birth to. It is also, to a lesser extent, a biography of Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (the father of Justice Holmes), Henry James, Sr. (the father of William James—whose brother was the famous novelist Henry James), and Benjamin Peirce (the father of Charles Peirce), all of whom were well-known and highly-respected (if a bit eccentric) intellectuals of their day who had a great deal of influence on the intellectual development of their respective sons. (John Dewey's father, Archibald, on the other hand, was a storekeeper—a fairly intelligent and well-read man, it seems, but not a scholar or a public figure like Holmes, James, and Peirce, Srs. The book devotes only a few sentences to him.) And the book also includes brief biographical sketches of many other people who influenced the development of Pragmatism in some meaningful way, including a number whose main contribution was simply to argue in favor of views that the Pragmatists ultimately rejected. But this book is also, as its subtitle, 'A Story of Ideas in America,' suggests, a biography of America itself, or at least a chapter in that biography. It is the story of how the Civil War and its aftermath changed America—in particular, how it changed the way American intellectuals think about big ideas.But it's even more than that. There are so many delightful treats in this book that it would be impossible for me to list them all. The author frequently goes off on what at first appear to be random tangents about topics ranging from the whaling industry to the Pullman strike to Laplace's and Maxwell's demons to legal battles over who gets to hire and fire professors at a university to how statistical analysis can be used to detect a forged signature on a will, but he always manages to tie all of these odd digressions back to the story of how ideas in America evolved in the decades after the Civil War, ultimately leading to the development of Pragmatism. The journey that the author takes us on has lots of twists, turns, and detours, but it is fascinating and fun—not to mention educational. I was particularly intrigued by the discussion of the various ideas about race and race relations that were being debated both before and after the Civil War. You may be surprised at some of the things you learn. (People held some pretty bizarre and appalling ideas about race in those days. Of course, most white Americans back then—on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line—were horribly racist by today's standards, and that includes a number of Abolitionists! But the sheer variety of views on race and race relations that were seriously proposed, discussed, and debated in those days is staggering. In the decades after the Civil War, many black intellectuals began to make their own contributions to this discussion. These included scholars such as W.E.B. du Bois, who had studied philosophy under William James, and Alain Locke, who was also influenced by the Pragmatist tradition. They are also discussed in this book.)If you are interested in philosophy, American history (particularly the history of the Civil War and its aftermath), or the history of ideas, I highly recommend this book. I guarantee you will learn something interesting, and you'll probably enjoy it, too.

The Overture:Louis Menand provides us with a delightful ride through American intellectual history while showing us that the evolution and development of American intellectual life was anything but smooth. It was full of contradictions and setbacks, as well as leaps forward, characterized by both progress and reversion. America was, and still is, characterized by a strange admixture of Christian fundamentalism, laissez-faire economics principles, national isolationism, a paternalistic tendency to evangelist its values, the doctrine of natural law, scientific determinism, personal free will, the validity of natural Darwinism, creation theory and the fallacy social Darwinism. In this book, Louis Menand puts forward a lucid and cogent case for the reconsideration of American pragmatism. In a world and a country of increasing vitriolic political division based on dearly held beliefs that do not allow for the possibility of error, a dose of good old American pragmatism might be in order. Anything that makes it harder for people to be driven to violence by their beliefs is to be welcome.The Pragmatic Summary:William James:C.S. Peirce, the founder of what we now know as pragmatism by which he meant, in simple terms, that what makes a statement true is the empirical verifiability of the statement as a result competent inquiry. William James meant that a statement is true if it works. To put it crudely, truth is what works and promotes wellbeing. More fully, James held that ideas precede truth. That is, “truth happens to an idea”. An Idea becomes a truth based on subsequent consequences and outcomes, ideas do not start as being ‘true’. This is how James explained that science and belief in God are compatible, including belief in free will, we develop beliefs that are useful and work in terms of navigating our personal existence and social experience. Beliefs work in the service of interests. Each is only a hypothesis and is changeable as experience unfolds. As James said, no belief is justified by its correspondence to ‘reality’ because mirroring the ‘reality’ is not the purpose of the human mind. We do not act because we have beliefs, we have beliefs because we act, the two then become commingled and inseparable. In the view of Peirce, what started as an instrument leading to ever expanding knowledge of the natural world became instead, in the hands of James, a tool for justifying belief in whatever one is deeply committed to believing. When Peirce learned what James had made of pragmatism he changed the name employed to label his thinking to “pragmaticism”, an intentionally awkward term to prevent its use and misuse. In any case, James did not much like the term pragmatism either, he preferred ‘humanism’ to describe what was going on in Peirce’s thought as well as his own.C.S. Peirce:In Peirce’s thought, ‘truth’ is the opinion upon which all competent investigations will converge based on rational scientific inquiries, opining will lead to convergence - this is as concise a summary of the view of Charles Sanders Peirce that I can manage. This to me means that there is an evolutionary learning process at the base of that which we call ‘truth’. We gain a sufficiency of understanding through experience, not a totality of understanding. What counts as evidence, methods of gathering evidence, and thus what counts as ‘truth’ changes over time. It is evolutionary and progressive in manner. Knowledge, ‘truth’, is just the outcome of competent examination of an issue subject to changing circumstances and competing values. What is ‘true’ is only derived at the end of a process of inquiry, not at the beginning. However, we proceed in the opposite manner, often believing that the ‘truth’ of the matter is arrived at first. For Peirce, the principle by which the ‘truth’ is established and understood occurs only after the fact. This does not mean that such principles are arbitrary or capricious, only that they are established, and modified, as a result of repeated and competent inquiry. The deeper implication is that our thinking is circular. That is, there is no appeal outside of our thinking to validate our thinking but the habitual activity resulting from the process inquiring and thinking can be statistically modeled, suggesting convergence around a mean which is an important part what Peirce meant with his “pragmaticism”. We only have a belief about beliefs because mental representations do not refer to things in the world, they refer to other metal representations. The less metaphysical are our beliefs, the more useful they will be for navigating the world.John Dewey:John Dewey preferred to call what became known as pragmatism, he did not like the label any more than did Peirce or James, as ‘instrumentalism’ by which he meant that ‘truth’ is what we are warranted in saying is true; ‘truth’ is just what is warrantably assertible and this found through the experience of doing and testing things in the world. Pragmatism provides an account of the way people navigate their experience of existence, the way they think, come up with ideas, form beliefs and reach decisions. That is, in the navigation of our experience, thinking and acting are two names for this single process of navigation. For Dewey, much like James, beliefs are merely tools. If a belief or set of beliefs do not work in the world, we simply disregard then an adopt new beliefs that do work, better at least, for now at least. There is no metaphysical privileging of the mind and ideas over any other aspect of the environment. The relation of the mind to ‘reality’ is no different than relation of hand to the environment. Good decisions are congruent with the social world. Ethics is social, not personal. As John Dewey stated, it is not the individual that makes the society, it is the society that make the individual. His idea of society was one based on tolerance and equality.Oliver Wendell Holmes:Oliver Wendell Holes would characterize all this quite succinctly in stating that a free trade in ideas is far superior to the best devised test of ‘truth’. But Homes realized that there are always defects in free trade and market transactions that prevent them from being completely free or perfectly competitive. This is an experimental process but life itself is an experiment and Homes crucially understood that explements can fail. ‘Truth’ is not correspondence to a preexisting ideology or metaphysical ‘reality’, it is simply that which produces a difference for the civil society. In the view Holmes, individual rights such as free speech are protected, not because the rights inhere to the individual, but because such rights benefit the community; to find the best possible ‘truth’ - to produce the optimal outcomes for the society. Free speech is not an individual good, it is a social good.Criticisms of Pragmatism:What is important and common to the four leading thinkers of pragmatism is that it does not provide a fixed philosophical system like so much of nineteenth century and prior thinking. There are no conclusions, just a continued unfolding. It was certainly not a revolutionary philosophy. However, pragmatism does not address from where or how we get our ideas and interests and why some people are prepared to die, and kill others, for what is just a contingent working hypothesis. Pragmatism provides no criteria by which to judge the ‘truths’ that result from pragmatism, not even the crudest of utilitarian criteria is suggested. Are these pragmatic ‘truths’ the same as values? Is this how values are created under a pragmatic regime? Is anything that achieves its end to be regarded as valuable? Is this what is meant by value?The Pragmatic Truth:What follows from pragmatism is that ‘truth’ is to be found in processes and procedures, not in principles and premises. If the legal or scientific procedures are correct for example, the outcomes will be beneficial science and law. Beneficial science and law do not follow from preexisting ideas, truths or metaphysical systems no matter how cherished or traditional. The same is true education, If the procedures and process of education are good, the education will be good.The Poor Print Quality of the Book:As enthusiast of paper and ink, I found both to be of inferior quality in this printing. The print itself is faint and in places letters are poorly struck or altogether missing. This resulting in words that are incomplete, e.g., p 195, to wit: “individual” is rendered as “ dividual’ and “ a machine” is rendered as “ achine”. On p. 155, the word “we” is missing, perhaps more an example of poor editing. On p. 332, the word “waste” is rendered as “ aste” with a poorly struck ”a”. None of this is reflection upon the author or the book as a literary work, both of which are excellent.

Covering the time between the end of the Jihad and the beginning of the "Dark Ages" this book covers the rise of the Republic and the wars it fought to keep itself together. Highly recommend it if you are interested in that time period or to fill in gaps.

Not a big fan of the Republic Era or the way they are taking the Battletech story line, but for what it is and with that dislike the book is still a good product.

Racing Savannah (Hundred Oaks), by Miranda Kenneally

From Booklist

Kenneally (Stealing Parker, 2012) again looks at sports through a female lens, this time tackling male-dominated horse racing, in this fourth Hundred Oaks novel. Savannah, her widowed horse-trainer father, and her father’s pregnant girlfriend move to Tennessee’s Cedar Hill, a farm that trains horses for races including the Kentucky Derby. When the teen notices that she is the only one who can control Star, a horse that bucks all riders, she seizes the chance to realize her dream of becoming a jockey. But placing herself in this potentially deadly sport is not Savannah’s only danger. There’s also her instant attraction to Jack Goodwin, the farm owner’s cocky, flirtatious son. Savannah decides she wants more than “friends with benefits” (even if she can’t stop thinking about those skin-to-skin benefits), but wonders if she will always be considered “the help” in Jack’s world of privilege. The author’s knack for weaving forbidden romance, breezy dialogue, and details of this lesser-known sports venue places it in the winner’s circle for reluctant readers and chick-lit fans. Grades 9-12. --Angela Leeper

Review

""Kenneally's equestrian-themed romance is energized by another winning heroine . . . Kenneally's story about considering the importance of one's own happiness should appeal to a wide audience; despite some bumps in the road, there's never any doubt that all will end well."" - Publishers Weekly""Kenneally has established herself as a writer of romances with some interesting complexity along with the swooning, and there's certainly plenty of swooning and steamy pleasure here. Additionally, Savannah herself is genuinely brash and not just saucy, and the Tennessee milieu is vividly evoked." " - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books ""The author's knack for weaving forbidden romance, breezy dialogue, and details of this lesser-known sports venue places it in the winner's circle for reluctant readers and chick-lit fans." Heartwarming, fun, and with characters that I felt to know and regard almost like old friends, Racing Savannah was a book I read in literally two nights. I had never read a romance that takes place in a horse-racing backdrop, and I found myself enjoying learning the ins and outs of horse racing almost as much as I enjoyed seeing Savannah and Jack's relationship develop as the story progressed. One thing I love about this author is that she portrays people realistically. Most people in the story, just like most people in the real world, are a mixed bag - and yes, there are exceptions like the creepy son of one of the horse owners. Overall though, Racing Savannah succeeds not just with the main protagonists' relationship but also the side characters which Kenneally puts in to enrich the story. Oh, and any story about a badass girl jockey falling in love is just hard not to love...so I'm giving it 5 stars.

~~~Review posted on The Heart of a Book Blogger~~~I decided to reread Racing Savannah, an old favorite, after being in a reading slump for a couple of weeks. I really do love Savannah and her passion for horses and eventually jockeying. And oh man does Jack make me swoon! I love their relationship and the Downton Abbey upstairs-downstairs vibes as Savannah and Jack try to navigate their feelings. This is definitely a must read if you like sport romances!
Racing Savannah was such a great young adult novel. It was the second book in my Miranda Kenneally-binge last weekend and I enjoyed it just as much as the one before. This time it's all about a working class girl and a rich guy – and the girl and her dad just happen to work for the rich guy and his family.Savannah and Jack were both great, relatable characters. I loved them both, but Savannah came out on top as far as I'm concerned. She was wonderful. I loved her drive and her heart. She was wonderful with animals and her relationship with one of the most difficult horses at Jack's family's farm was something truly special... just like Savannah's character. Jack was a good guy in a tough spot. His father had given him a chance to run their horse farm, but he wasn't an easy guy to please. One of his father's strictest rules was "don't date the staff." I think we all know that one was doomed to be broken. Jack wasn't all swoony all the time, but he won me over when it was all said and done.Savannah and Jack had their issues – most coming because of the differences in their backgrounds and upbringing – but I still thought the romance was sweet and had a ton of heart. I loved watching both characters grow as a result of their time together, too. Despite their differences, they made a fantastic pair. It was a bumpy road, but it was also a real one.Racing Savannah takes place a few years after the first few books in the series and there was a fantastic scene a little more than halfway through the book in which we were treated to an AMAZING checkin with some of the earlier characters in the series. It totally melted my heart. I mean, big time cheesy smiles for pages and pages. I get a huge grin on my face just thinking about it! <3I love the Hundred Oaks series. I love how real and honest it is, and how Ms. Kenneally isn't afraid to tackle tough subjects in the books. These books touch on everything from sexism to religion and abortion to the "war" between the classes. They feature characters its impossible not to fall for and a storyline I just can't get enough of. I love the friendships and the romance. They're truly the total package. If you're not reading this series, you should be.
Honestly, my initial reaction upon writing this review for Racing Savannah is to want to kick myself in the butt for not reading this one when it released last year. I liked Catching Jordan, Kenneally’s debut novel, but my love for her series was cemented with Stealing Parker and fortified by Things I Can’t Forget. So, knowing I really liked her writing, I should have seized the opportunity and read Racing Savannah when it was in my hands months ago.Racing Savannah is considered another companion novel in the Hundred Oaks series. But really, it feels more like a new beginning, as readers are introduced to a new generation of characters to fall in love with. I love the familiarity of the community, but also enjoy the newness offered by these fun new people!But first, let’s focus on the one element that I loved about this book – the horses! I’ve been obsessed with the idea of horses and horseback riding since I was a little girl. (Relevant sidebar: I was a major fan of the Saddle Club books. Holler if you were too.) Though I’ve only really been riding a couple of times, it’s always been a really fun experience that I want to repeat!Ahem, okay, back to reviewing now.The story still evokes the Kenneally books of the past, focusing heavily on one character’s personal journey, and her relationships – familial, friendly & romantic. Savannah is our narrator – and she’s a really likable one, too! She’s really a typical teenager, albeit one with a strong interest in horses. Her struggles to give herself the best possible chance at a future (especially after recognizing her father’s financial difficulties), her genuine love for horses (from riding them to caring for them) and her willingness to do things for the people she cared about really won her major points with me. I liked that she made the best of her situation, and also happened to be pretty smart and downright funny at times.As mentioned, many of Savannah’s relationships become important parts of this novel. She is very close to her father, who is afraid to lose Savannah after losing his wife. She starts out not really caring about her stepmother-to-be, but still willing to do anything for her and the baby she’s carrying. She becomes friends with Rory, a groom at the stables her father works at (and little brother to a guy named Will *winks*) and Vanessa, a surprisingly down-to-earth rich girl. She also has a pretty good repartee with the stable hands, grooms and exercise trainers, and even with the family that owns the stables.And then there’s Jack. He is a rich boy, determined to prove to his father that he can capably manage their family business – their stables + horses. Jack’s known nothing but privilege all his life, but it’s pretty endearing to see how dedicated he is to making sure he handles business well. There were times when I wanted to tear his eyes out for the things he said or the way he acted, but there were also times that I wanted to hug him. In the end, he turns out to be a guy worth rooting for, that’s for sure.There are a few things that really surprised me about Racing Savannah – and again, in the best way:Sex: I was very pleasantly surprised to see that Kenneally didn’t shy away from things of a sexual nature. The reality is that many teenagers are sexually active – and that’s their choice to make. I really appreciated that Kenneally treated it as a part of regular life; it’s an excellent attitude to have.Social class: This is obviously one of the bigger issues in this novel, as Jack is rich and Savannah is, well, not-so-rich. Seeing how their realities, despite an overlap when it came to working with horses, were so different was pretty startling. I sometimes forget that extremes like this do exist, and I think Kenneally did admirably in painting a picture that seemed pretty unbiased (and didn’t attack one class for particular qualities).College & the future: One of the things many teens struggle to figure out is what they want for their future, and what they’ll be doing for the rest of their lives. Kenneally depicts two situations here. Jack is set to run the family business, and wants to. Savannah assumes she’ll go straight from high school to working around horses. It’s interesting to see how both situations play out for them, especially Savannah’s, and I really think it felt realistic.Racing Savannah was the perfect read to get back in the saddle with the Kenneally series. (See what I did there?) Really, it’s got the signature charm of the first three in the series, due to an irresistible combination of characters (including appearances of all of my old favorites) + setting + story. It was a stellar addition to the Hundred Oaks collection, and a very solid contemporary read all in all.
Like others have said, if you are a beginner hoping to learn the basics of 3D printing then this book will be great for you. It covers a broad range of topics that are applicable to specific 3D printing technologies. So on that end, it's a great book and I would give it 5 stars.However, if you are like me and using 3D printing everyday and have been for years, this book will likely not be that helpful to you. I was expecting a more detailed book that really got into the weeds of 3D printing - acceleration speeds, microstepping, back-pressure issues, retraction settings, dual extrusion, direct drive vs. bowden setups, flow rates, etc. I just simply misunderstood the purpose of the book when I bought it. So as for a technical textbook I would only give it 3 stars.So should you buy it? Well it depends. If you're looking to learn about 3D printing and various applications and nothing more, then yes - by all means. But if you REALLY want to learn about 3D printing, skip the book, save up and buy an actual 3D printer. Getting your hands dirty with a cheap, open-source 3D printer is by far the best way to really learn the depths of 3D printing. Note: there will be times where you'll want to bang your head against the wall, but it's worth it.
Not at all a handbook of 3d printing. This book is a summary of types of 3d printing. There is no point to this book, it will not help anyone other than to summarize the types of 3d printing and what 3d printing can be used for. How this book has such a high rating is odd. I was looking specifically for a book to show how you can get better prints and improve quality, that would be called a handbook by any traditional author, wouldn't it?
This is a superb comprehensive guide on 3D printing, not an on-boarding book for beginners. It is written with cohesive understanding of the entire 3D printing landscape, thus it functions as a manual providing surface to semi-advanced information on all 3D printing technologies, including lesser-known types.The only downside of this is: to most people familiar with 3D printing (makers who mostly deal with FDM), 70% of the book might be irrelevant, because it discusses industrial 3D printing processes not accessible at this time.If you need an all-in-one guide on 3D printing as a whole, this is an invaluable resource. If you want a guide to FDM printing and its applications, there might be publications more dedicated to FDM exclusively.
The title is a little bit misleading for engineers, scientists, and so on... It is an introduction to 3D printing presented in a concise way that would certainly be appealing to high school students and non-highly technical readers that would like to know more about additive manufacturing. A real handbook would actually contain more technical information (in greater depth) that would be usable by engineers and technical personnel involved in additive manufacturing. The cost & page count is certainly low for a handbook so not really a total surprise.
This book covers all the 3D possible options in regard to material and type of printers for today s marketBecause it s so wide you n its topic do not a expect to find any advanced technics or help for your 3D printing. If you are a neophyte this is a good general introduction of what printer might fit your needs.
It's not really a go to handbook to find technical details about different techniques in 3D printing. It's more of a list of summaries of different types/styles of printing and general/brief overviews on some basics things to consider when using a certain printing style. Besides this, this book's design and conveying of the information it intends to convey is done beautifully. I just have a problem with the title including the term handbook.
Good introduction with some information that is not widely known. Very good way to get started in the world of 3d printing with some great diagrams.
The first thing you will notice is that the book is beautifully crafted (including that nice new book smell). It uses clear typography and overall the balance between text and pictures is well thought of. The book consists of 3 sections:- The first section explains the full spectrum of 3D printing. Most people will be familiar with FDM (or the book calls it FFF), however other 3D Printing technologies such as SLA, DLP, etc. are covered equally.- The second section provides more details on what you need to consider in the design phase; again laid out for each 3D Printing technology. Understanding the various limitations and possibilities is crucial when you use a particular technology.- The third part presents for each 3D Printing technology possible applications, again for each of the various 3D Printing technologies.Personally, the first section gave me more insight in all the available 3D Printing technologies and was very educational. Most useful to me was actually the second section, as it provided specific guidance in creating 3D models and how that will affect the outcome.All in all, this is a great book to have and is a great addition to your library; for both seasoned engineers and people that want to get started with 3D Printing.
