I have been reading fantasy since discovering A Wrinkle in Time at age 12, 50 years of diving deep into new worlds. I find I have very little patience for authors who don’t take time to build language, culture, and a sense of place in their world. Olivia Cole does just that. In addition, her character development is golden. I read as much for character as for plot, and both were very satisfying. After reading only a little while, I started looking around for the characters, as though they were real people. That is the sign that I have become truly immersed in the world. I am delighted to have another author to seek out.

Excellent read with great world-building as well as a beautiful tribute to Octavia Butler. I often wonder at the "YA" label, in that my nearly-40-year-old self enjoys just as much "YA" as I do any other type of fiction. Don't let labels deter or distract you from an excellent read.I hope Ms Cole doesn't keep Part Two from us for too long; leaving us with such a breathless final 20-30 pages as she did, she better be sitting at her laptop polishing a draft as I write this review!

Olivia Cole has produced a science fiction novel that is a very good introduction for her to the YA format. I enjoyed it and could think of four or five people I would recommend it to right away. That is my highest praise. The plot is varied, covering a lot ifinteresting topics, including budding romance and parental approval, imaginative, and compelling. The pacing of the plot is good. The reader sees things gradually unfold at a logical and measured rate that does not become forced.Characters are very well rounded. There are no stock characters that the writer has fallen back on. The main characters are not perfect and also arenotine-sided. The reader connects with them.Ms Cole has created a believable world for her story. There is enough description to engage the reader but does not bog down the pacingFirst person present tense is easy to write in but hard to write well. Ms Cole has done well. She does not force readers to feel artificial or forced emotions through this choice of style and tone. All in all, I think this book is a good addition to my library and I will be loaning my copy out several times. Great job!

One of the elements that pulled me into A Conspiracy of Stars is Octavia's voice. She's smart and perceptive, yes, but also impatient and reckless. In other words, she's a teenager. It's difficult to write teenagers so deftly, but Olivia Cole has that gift, that perfect ear. A Conspiracy of Stars is more than a sci-fi thriller; it's also a coming-of-age, pro-science story with uncomfortable but necessary parallels to America's racist past and present. Ms. Cole doesn't shy away from the explorers' depiction of indigenous people as the dangerous, unpredictable 'other' in order to rationalize the exploitation of the planet's resources. She refuses to preach, instead letting Octavia's realizations unfold with all of the emotion and pain a young person experiences when the world she thought she knows comes into sharp, clear focus. Octavia is an extraordinary heroine for the ages.

This story takes you to a completely different place, yet has you searching things within yourself. The main character Octavia's explorations bring the inner adventurer out of you, in all senses. The thick themes within this book are crucial during this time.I am not a traditional Sci-Fi reader but Olivia A. Cole makes Sci-Fi accessible. She helps us see how close Sci-Fi is to our reality. This book will keep you engaged, fill your Sci-Fi needs, and leave you feeling more fulfilled.

A well written, well-paced book with a main character who engages me from the first...That's true, but cliche. I find it difficult to write reviews, but I can show you the tweet I sent to the author:"I just finished A Conspiracy of Stars. I feel breathless and energised. I'm not exaggerating. Thank you for writing it...I loved the ride!"A book that gets that kind of emotional AND physical reaction from me gets all the stars.

I loved this book! Right from the first page I quickly began to appreciate the rich world of Faloiv that this author created so vividly. I enjoyed the full development of the beautifully diverse characters; I felt as though I was sharing every experience right alongside of Octavia the heroine and her friends Alma and Rondo. The creatures on the world of Faloiv are written with such imagination and unique design that I could easily envision them on a big screen! The parallels to many of today's challenges in our own world are compelling and thought provoking. The villains in Octavia's life display an astonishing lack of empathy and compassion for other people and creatures on their world of Faloiv. In their quest to return to the days (planet) of earlier times they choose to disregard nature, science and new truths all in the name of self-interest.This book flows easily and the suspenseful and enthralling plot makes it a real page turner. I hope the sequel is right on the heels of this great read because it is a cliffhanger of the best kind!

The book is written in gorgeous prose and the world-building is intricate, to say the least. However, the pacing was simply too slow for my tastes. All of the action happened in the last 10% of the novel. Prior to that, the protagonist, Octavia, spends the entire novel stumbling upon conclusions that the reader figured out right away. I would have rather spent that time watching Octavia develop her abilities, build relationships with creatures, test her strength, etc.Ultimately, I enjoyed the premise but got a bit bogged down in the execution.

Maya Threads: A Woven History of Chiapas

Review

"Immeasurably deep, endlessly layered and nuanced, aesthetically beautiful, resonating with the grounding of ancient ways yet in constant, dynamic flux, the world of the traditional Maya is incomprehensible to those who have not breathed it into their beings. Truly rare are those from the outside who understand it, rarer still are those who can respectfully transmit the complexity of this society to those of us on the outside. Chip Morris is one of these rare individuals, intelligent and humble, with humor and profound insight gained through close to four decades of life in the Chiapan highlands. He is also an excellent storyteller and he and his coauthor, Carol Karasik, do honor to that skill as well as the rich culture they share with us in this book."  —Eric Mindling, Traditions Mexico Cultural Tours, Oaxaca, Mexico"Walter F. Morris, Jr. speaks with a voice of authority derived from his thirty years of experience working with Maya textile artists in Chiapas, Mexico. His coauthor, Carol Karasik, brings her own experience of the country and its people and an accessible writing style to the book, and Janet Schwartz’s beautiful images speak their own language about Maya clothing in bright detail. Maya Threads covers the clothing and customs of Chiapas from ancient to present times, and the changes that have occurred as new materials and influences have affected the culture."  —Margot Blum Schevill, coauthor, Maya Textiles of Guatemala"Contemporary indigenous dress in Chiapas is a fascinating amalgam of pre-Hispanic Maya traditions and influences from the modern market economy, filtered by the creativity of the people who make and wear it. The authors [of this book] lovingly describe how and why it changed from then to now, based on long-time familiarity with Chiapas as well as new field work and interviews. Together with the gorgeous photographs, there is significantly more detail on the subject here than ever before, in some cases with the exact year and innovator identified. It is warmly recommended to travelers and scholars alike."  —Ann Pollard Rowe, author, A Century of Change in Guatemalan Textiles"It will be of great help and interest to anyone working in the field of Central American textiles and clothing, as well as those looking for inspiration for their own work. Well worth having!" —Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood, Director, Textile Research Centre

For those who love handwoven textiles, this book is a "must have." The narrative about the history of Mayan weaving in the highlands of Chiapas begins with a scholarly explanation of the correlation between images that appear in ancient Mayan temple carvings and myths, and continues through the story of how the images and the artistry of Mayan weavers has been preserved and elaborated through the centuries. The tale moves through Mexican history from the time before the Spanish conquest, the colonial period after the conquest, the Mexican revolution, and forward to the modern era. The photos and the text also address the differences in the weaving arts in different villages, the weaving and embroidery techniques, and the costumes and feast days of the various villages. The book is very well written, and the photos are spectacular. I highly recommend this book.

Photography not as nice as I had hoped (snapshot quality) but lots of pics, and **amazing**, knowledgeable history of this ethnic fashion genre!

Another great book by Chip Morris, updating other work done about the textile art of Chiapas.

Very nice book. Highly recommended!

Excellent history of the Chiapas through textiles.

Excellent work

Beautiful, inspiring.

I was pleased to receive this book in the mail as a gift from Thrum Books. This review however is my honest opinion. As Deborah mentioned the photos are outstanding and, of course, that was my first cruise through the book. Then I decided I needed to actually read it from cover to cover. Haven't gotten all the way through yet, but I want to get my thoughts down soon.Chapter 1 had me flipping back and forth from descriptions to diagrams and back again. I had a difficult time identifying the symbols and designs. Mayan culture and history is not something I've studied a lot. Very intriguing and makes me want to study it all the more. The following chapters had me at the first page. I love hearing about the costumes and how they are made and how some have evolved in response to the introduction of modern materials and machines and because of the interaction of various communities due to new roads. And don't get me started on the embroidery... amazing work. But I'm kind of disappointed to learn that embroidery mean that some communities quit weaving the patterns into the cloth since it could be embroidered on purchased cloth. I love that the Cancuc women discovered blue in about 2005 - their huipils are gorgeous. It was fascinating to read about the changes in costumes and how there is no recorded history of those - no fashion magazines! - and the word of mouth history from villagers is called into question by the authors.A book with political and religious history as well as cultural history. Wonderful reading, too much to consume in one sitting. I will return to chapter one and work through each following chapter one at a time and try to get a sense of the vast cultural variety in this tiny part of the Americas.Diane

I read Watchmen nearly a decade ago, and I saw immediately why it was called the greatest graphic novel of all time. While the sculptor may not reach the heights of that work, it comes closer than any comic I've ever read. The sculptor starts out by examining the character of David Smith a lonely, washed-out sculptor living in New York. David was once fairly successful, but when his patron dumps him, he thinks he may never get another chance to be remembered. But fortunately, he finds his answer with death. No, that is not a typo. David makes a deal with: in exchange for supernatural sculpting skills, David will die in 200 days. But as with all deals with death, life gets in the way. This novel unleashes the best of what comics can do. To begin with, Scott McCloud dreams up cavalcade of great sculptures for David. The sheer visual marvels he dreams up can go on for pages. But that isn't half as impressive has the characters that fill the story. We have Oliver, David's best friend and Agent, Meg, a woman who helps David when life gets him down, and dozens and dozens of friends who get varied amounts of sceen time. So many of these characters are three-dimensional people, where a lesser writer would have just left them as props for the story. By the time the book goes through all of their trials and tribulations, you won't be able to read the ending without crying.I can not recommend this book to you enough. Get reading.

So, I just finished this, and I'm still trying to figure out my response. Is this a brilliant work of genius or just a very good graphic novel (this is where a real decision between four and five stars gets made). Bringing a virtuosic command of the language of graphic novels, McCloud provides a story that is both touching, Faustian in a manner more like Thomas Mann's version than Goethe's, with a strong sense of the inevitable woven amidst the fantastic. I was regularly struck not just by the narratives details substantiating McCloud's description of the art world but the visual details that bring New York City to life; it's not just the key phrases and visual attentiveness but the tone that made me feel like McCloud (despite his protestations at the end) is an insider and is telling the tale from a privileged perspective. And, on top of that, I was so glad that McCloud doesn't for once think that his protagonist has been producing anything of real artistic value except at the very end (and, then, maybe not even then); a lesser author might have wanted us to think that the first burst of creative productivity would instantly produce works of genius. Does it get a bit heavy-handed and, subsequently, trite at the end? The ending seems already foretold, and I kept saying to myself that, maybe, all of that foreshadowing is just McCloud manipulating for something more surprising than I got. That being said, there's a few pages towards the very end (right after he's seemingly suspended in the alleyway) that I knew were coming but which were handled with such verve that they astonished me. In the end, writing this, I can't help but think this is one of the finest graphic novels I've read in years, and I only wish I could give it four and half stars because it's so close to perfection.

This is a book I've wanted to read for a long time, but have just now gotten around to. I ordered a hard copy as I figured Kindle wouldn't do the illustrations justice (I typically read everything I can on Kindle as I love the format). When my copy came in the mail I opened it up to take a peek, not expecting to be able to get to it for a few days, and within the first page I was fully engrossed. I ended up sitting down and reading the entire book in two hours. The concept was great, the art was beautiful, and the writing was powerful. My only real complaint was the ending. I wasn't expecting everything to turn out how I wanted it to, but the direction this book went in the final pages felt like it was breaking the mold a little too much. That being said, I really enjoyed this book. One of my favorite aspects was the main character's relationship with Death, and how Death's motives are not told to the reader completely, but one can infer them by the details given. I love it when author's don't think readers are stupid.Overall, a solid dark fantasy that sucks you in from the first page.

The first panels of the story introduce us to the artist through a shot at his hands resting on either side of a plate holding crumbs. I cannot say what is n the last, or near to last panel, without spoiling the story, but it is epic, and jaw dropping, heart breaking, and elating all at once. And between those two points, McCloud leads us through 200 frantic days in the life of an artist who has made a faustian pact with Death for the love of art.McCloud being the great sequential art theoretician that he is, produces a mind-bogging effective and gripping narration. It will keep comic lovers on the edge of their seats, and will provide an anthology of all the precepts that he teaches in Understanding Comics, and Making Comics, to the students of the Nineth Art. But do not expect laser blasts, men in tights, flying machines, or cosmic scenery. The characters may not be all well grounded, but they are true to form New Yorkers. And McCloud masterfully weaves the mundane and the supernatural to powerful dramatic effects.Just read it, but once you start, don't expect to put it down before you reach the last page.

"The Voyage of the Dawn treader" may be my favorite book in the "Chronicles of Narnia". Many of the other reviewers have made comparisons, however I see it a little differently. I am reminded of Swift's "Gulliver's travels" and its imagination and satire. Obviously, the Lewis has updated the satire and changed aspects of the story - but both have the same sense of adventure. Another added bonus to "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is the humor. Several of the chapters are very, very funny. The land "of the invisible people" comes to mind as an especially funny section. In truth, Lewis has included all of the ingredients for a fine novel, humor, high adventure, coming of age, and moral decisions. The plot is nicely woven together and doesn't seem to jump as much as "Prince Caspian" and some of the others, so in my opinion "Voyage" may also be the best written of the books in the series.Final tally- Humor "A"Adventure "A"Writing style "B+"Overall - "A" - a very solid read and sure to be one of your child's favorites!

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia (text only) by C. S. Lewis,P. Baynes I bought this copy because for one, I personally did not want a "movie tie-in" version, I wanted to have a hardcover edition that contained all of the books in one that I could keep for years and pass down to my children - in short, good quality, tasteful, with pictures. It was described as being "Used - Good", but it arrived in excellent condition (no noticeable tears on the book itself with only slight page wear). This version came with a book jacket which is identical to the hard cover itself, so I threw away the jacket which was well worn. Also, the book description says "text only", which is strange, because this copy has tons of the original illustrations in full-color (I'll try to post pictures soon).I feel like I hit the jackpot with this purchase and I highly encourage everyone to get this copy ASAP, because I've noticed the price of the "all-in-one" books skyrocketing lately (Barnes and Noble used to have a "leather"-bound copy for $20 three years ago which is $100 now). I sure hope these books don't go out of print, but if they do, you'll be glad you purchased this particular version, because it'll be passed down the family.

This is a beautiful paperback box set of the Narnia collection, that so many of us grew up with. The covers are nice, thick and protective of the pages inside, which are of good paper stock. I have no print fading or errors that I've noticed. The art on the outter box is beautiful on all sides, with a little read up at the top. For paperbacks, I believe this is the way to go! Highly recommended!

This is a really lovely storybook collection based on all seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Those include: “The Magician's Nephew”, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, “The Horse and His Boy”, “Prince Caspian”, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, “The Silver Chair”, and “The Last Battle”. As the coloring book is slightly longer than average size and there are seven books covered, each is only touched on lightly. The coloring book can be used as an fun addition while you are reading the stories but it does not replace them. The designs are based on the original artwork by Pauline Baynes from the books written and published in the 1950's. In some cases, the artwork has been turned into what I call “wallpaper” style designs with repeated patterns. The designs include considerably more black in shading than usual for coloring books. That is because the original artwork was just that – artwork and not coloring designs. I've found that utilizing the black as shading is what works best for me with this type of design. I've run across it before when original artwork has been presented in this format. On a personal note, the designs bring back memories from my own life. I was a big fan of these books as a child and I would read them over and over again. Once I had children, I would read books to them before bedtime each night and this was a favorite, especially of my late son. He also would read the books over and over again on his own.I am now looking forward to reading them to my grandchildren and I will now also have a book of designs that I have colored to go along with them. I will admit that coloring these designs is a bittersweet experience as I spend as much time thinking of my son as I do in coloring. This is what I found as I colored in this book and tested the paper with my coloring medium. I'll include a list of my coloring medium, which I use for tests and for coloring, in the comments section below.96 pages of Designs based on original artwork from “The Chronicles of Narnia”Printed on both sides of the pagePaper is heavyweight, white, slightly smooth and non-perforatedGlue BoundMany Designs merge into the binding areaSome designs spread across two pages with integral parts merging into the binding areaAlcohol-based markers bleed through this paperWater-based markers, gel pens, and India ink pens do not bleed through the page.Colored pencils worked well with the paper. I was able to get good color with multiple layers of the same shade. I was also able to layer multiple colors and blend well using a pencil style blending stick. Both oil and wax based pencils worked well.

Love these books, but the font size is much too small on the Narnia Box Set (with movie pictures on box, linked below). It is advertised as for Grade 3 and up, but likely only Jr. High and older would be comfortable with this small of a Font Size. We are surprised that Harper Collins would publish such a small text Font Size, knowing that many children would be their audience.***It would be very helpful if Amazon would include the Font Size in the product description for books and other literature.*** (Surprised that they don't already include this.)Chronicles of Narnia Box SetWe are sending this box set back regrettably, and instead ordering this 2000-published box set, which is a couple inches taller, hoping it has an adequate font size for young readers (link below). It costs $8 more, but should hopefully be the solution we need for the too-small font. The Chronicles of Narnia Box Set: Full-Color Collector's Edition
