YES! I love this book. My 3yo son recently asked why he couldn't hold water, so I bought this book to explain it. My kids found it interesting and can how tell you the difference between states of matter. It's really well done in terms of simple explanations (but also has a surprising amount of detail) and has cute illustrations. I highly recommend this book (and the series) to any science oriented parents.

The subject is matter. It does a pretty good job explaining the concept to young kids. My 2nd grader just read it. Although the age range is up to 3rd grade, these books also reinforce science concepts to my 6th grader. Four stars because in this series there is inevitably there is always 1-2 pages they don't do well.

Great book! I recommend it and so do my students.

Perfect book for teaching states of matter and changes in states of matter.

good.

Great addition to our unit on states of matter.

Like the book. Just bummed it came damaged. Binding was torn.

Very Good

Don't let the bus on the cover fool you -- this book is much more than technical accounts of transportation. In covering varied attempts at improving transportation in Southern California going as far as back as the freeway for bicycles of the 1800s, the author includes historical tidbits about agriculture, communities, race, urban growth, politicians, elections, corruption, and more. He is the kind of writer that leaves no stone unturned, providing background information about places and people as they are introduced. He really did his research! I learned the full story about things I had previously known only from photos or scant references. This book also covers items as recent as Los Angeles River restoration (after attempts to turn it into a freeway) and the advent and expansion of Metro Rail and Metrolink, all in narratives that are never dull. Photos and maps in the book are a plus.

I have lived in the LA area for over 20 years and never thought we have such a rich history of public transportation. Charles book is so detailed and informative; It kept my interest from the first page to the last. You can really see the passion Charles put in writing his book on every page. This is a must read for anyone interested in local history. A pure delight!

This book is well done. The author's writings are well researched and thorough.

A very interesting book that doesn't waste much time on L.A.'s public transit history that most everyone is familiar with, but rather covers little known and intriguing operations largely lost to history. Well written too.

Had a lot of interesting info I'd never heard about but was missing some history that deserved mentioning.Overall-Mr. Hobbs did some great digging for data and that makes it worth a reading.

very interesting

What an amzing book of history with such great deal and interesting facts.

LA is known mainly as the land of the "great big freeway" and its obsession with cars. Some people know about our transit systems of the past, like the Pacific Electric "Red Cars". But there have been many other ways for Angelenos to get around - operating and proposed- and in a series of short stories, Charles Hobbs shares the stories of the people and personalities that guided them. From a toll bicycle path from Downtown L.A. to Pasadena and propeller-driven monorails to decades of proposals to turn the LA River into a freeway, Angelenos have come up with interesting ways to get around, and other Angelenos made their fortunes as entrepreneurs helping people get around. Sadly, many of these folks who deserve a mention in LA history have been forgotten , but kudos to Mr. Hobbs for telling us about them in this engaging book.
