Review

"Difficult as it may be to interpret ancient Tibetan Buddhist imagery for contemporary meditators, it is perhaps even more challenging to make historical Buddhist texts accessible. In a new translation of The Lotus Sutra, Gene Reeves aims to do just this. Reeves uses everyday language wherever possible, translating into English many words that previous works have left in Sanskrit. This approach is particularly appropriate for the Lotus Sutra, which emphasizes that enlightenment is attainable for everyone." (Tricycle)"This translation is immediately the new standard, expressing the Lotus Sutra with accuracy, clarity, and fresh readability. The text's genius and subtle spiritual teachings are skillfully captured for a wide audience." (Taigen Dan Leighton, Loyola University, author of Visions of Awakening Space and Time: Dogen and the Lotus Sutra)"A highly readable new translation of the great Lotus Sutra, Gene Reeves skillfully renders the complexity of the text from a scholarly standpoint while delivering its flavor for practitioners. An invaluable resource for students in the classroom as well as in the meditation hall." (Mark Unno, University of Oregon, author of Shingon Refractions)"For readers who are not familiar with the Lotus Sutra, this is an excellent opportunity to acquaint oneself with a bedrock Mahayana text. Dr. Reeves brings a welcome perspective of both scholarship and sympathy to the text, which is extremely multifaceted and requires flexibility to fully represent its fascinating-and at times somewhat frustrating-elements. This new version is also particularly important because it includes the rarely translated Sutra of Innumerable Meanings and the Sutra of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, which are traditionally considered to be the preface and appendix of the main text and hold an important place in the liturgy and study of the Lotus Sutra. And Dr. Reeves has made a strong effort to make the text truly accessible to anyone, including non-Buddhists and non-specialists." (Tricycle Editors' Blog)

This is a fine translation. Readable, clear, poetic. So why two stars? It's something that's mentioned in almost every review - but I think the problem is more serious than has often been discussed. That's the translator's need to change the names of non-human beings in the text to figures from Greek mythology.Yes. As many others have noticed, it's jarring. But it's more than that. One of the realities of the Buddhist worldview is that there are innumerable other types of intelligent beings, some beneficent, and some maleficent. These beings - the rakshas, yakshasas, kimnanras, and many others are, to a Buddhist, absolutely real. They are as real as humans or animals. But Mr. Reeves "translation" of these creatures into satyrs, nymphs, centaurs does far more harm than simply sounding infelicitous. His approach makes these creatures - and by extension, the vast cosmos of the Lotus - seem mythological. Not real. A fantasy. And that, I think, does a major injustice to the world view of the sutra.Without that? I'd give the translation 5 stars. But I think this choice on his part is sufficiently serious that it needs to be pointed out as more than just a rather bizarre translation choice.

Reviewing the Lotus Sutra is like reviewing Homer's Iliad or the Book of Jonah. It is one of the world's great wisdom texts but that doesn't mean it is an easy read. It was originally written more or less to be performed, to be chanted and brought to life by human voices, not perused from the luxury of our armchair. Reeves does an admirable attempt at translating but the use of the terms from Greek mythology still remains a problematic and unnecessary choice and in hind sight I would have probably went with another translator.

It is so delightful to have a very readable and lively translation of a scripture beloved to so many. Every time the opportunity comes I enjoy reading and reflecting on these words. Reeves companion book, "Stories from the Lotus Sutra," is also very good. This is a teaching from the heart of the mahayana, and I've always felt it's special gift was the joy of true entrustment. To experience the presence of a vast multitude of awakened and awakening beings, here for us, ever offering "skillful means" to nudge us toward discovery of the ultimate dimension, this is what turns our hearts and minds to that deep trust and confidence making the path joyous. Thanks to all the hard working and perceptive translator/ practitioners whose work of love is so fruitful.

Complete Lotus sutra - much more to it than you would think. Includes the famous 25th chapter on Guan Yin (Avalokiteshvara), Who hears all the cries of the world.

Easier to understand than the other version I have and the introduction is very good with respect to background information.

This is an easy to read translation. You don't have to be a scholar or a long time practicing Buddhist to understand this version. The Burton Watson translation is the only other one I have read. It was more difficult. Mr. Reeves' version is easier for a new Buddhist or someone who wants to read and learn about Buddhism to digest.

From Sanskrit to Chinese to English. Some areas seem to lack fluidity but that is common to any translation. This is my first reading of the Dharma of the Lotus Sutra but I am pleased with the experience.

Good quality book, easy to understand.

This is a horrible book! From constantly.trying to make non Amish people look like horrible unfeeling humans to the ending that flat out sucked. I don't even like giving it a 1 star rating quite frankly. And the little political dig about who is in the white house, really? What exactly was the point in this book anyway? Not a good read at all!!!!

I was extremely disappointed that there was a political innuendo used in this story. A negative comparison was made to our president and the terrible hospital administrator. I do not think it was appropriate and I will not support this author in the future. I read novels for escape - not to be embroiled in politics. This book will be deleted from my library.

I am getting excessively tired of books that should be a single volume being divided into 2 or 3 or more short chunks so that you have to keep paying again and again in order to finish what is (or should be) actually only one story. If the author wishes to write serials, they should be identified as such. I will be far more diligent about checking book lengths in the future. It may be old fashioned but I like a beginning, development, climax, and denouement in a book. I like to feel that the story is complete, not just a teaser so I'll keep paying for additional pieces.

This was an Amish story that looked at a different side of how the Amish live their lives. They are not immune to the illnesses of this world, though I am sure their healthy way of living doesn’t hurt them at all when it comes to staying healthy. But they can, and do, have catastrophic illnesses happen just like the rest of the world. It is how they face it that is different. Faith carries them a long way, and community plays a big part in holding things together for those in need. They are not poor by any means, not that they are wealthy, but they generally have a reasonable approach to saving for emergencies and setting money aside for rainy days. And when an individual family falls short, their neighbors are right there for them. Having worked in the medical field all my life, it was obvious the author had done her homework about what cancer treatment involves. I hope it wasn’t first hand experience for her. The whole thing with the jerk in charge of the financial side of the hospital is probably pretty unlikely. He wouldn’t have a job very long in the real world. He can fuss and carry on in his office, but you simply can’t get away with treating patients in that manner, especially underage patients. Anyone but an Amish person who doesn’t choose utilize the legal system would practically own that hospital for what he did to them. However, he made for a great “bad guy.” The doctors and nurses were all the best possible examples of caring health professionals. Most are not in it to get rich, but because they truly care about others. The community was loving and supportive for the most part. Even among the Amish, there are obviously people who “don’t get along well with others.” I am glad that this book chose to show that. I have trouble with the whole drama around wearing a mask. I have never heard anyone every equate wearing a mask with thinking they were “better” than others. There might be a stigma to wearing one, but that surely can’t be one of the reasons. But this story does not really need picking apart. It is an honest look at how cancer can affect not just the patient and their immediate family, but everyone close to them, in one way or another. It shows how much the community plays a day to day role in the lives of the Amish. Not only do they support one another in prayer, but they walk the talk of loving and caring for one another. They don’t just say they will pray for you, they are there with food, household help and money to carry someone through a rough patch or loss. A good Amish story that is focused on something other than romance for a change. There is a bit of it, but this is not your typical Amish romance!

I enjoyed this first book of Amish Sickness and Health. It is an easily read novel which pulls you into the story right away. There were many details which made me want to know a little bit more about. For instance Timothy's saying that Margarete's use of the mask was because she thought she was better than everyone else. I wanted to know a bit more about why he would say that. Then again jealousy can have an effect on us, if we let it get the best of us.Margarete's small family is quite protective of her. It, at times, seemed that her family and she were explaining her disease to everyone all the time. They were doing as we might all do, explaining the disease and reasons for certain behavior to anyone who needed to understand. The hospital administrator forcing further treatment at another hospital, further away, seemed down right mean. I myself felt like I needed to defend the Amish ways to him. It was all about the bottom line and his pride of making the hospital's goals of being in the black.I find myself yearning to know the rest of the story so much so that I purchased the remaining books in the series.

This was a great book. It starts right out with keeping my interest and never falters. It's a very easy read and well written.Margarete is almost 15 and becomes very ill. She is admitted to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment. During her lengthy hospitalization, the administrator of the hospital gets quite nasty because the Amish do not believe in insurance and even though they are making large payments the administrator doesn't want them in "his" hospital. Now you want to know what the diagnosis is? You'll just have to read it to find out.

Very simplistic writing, totally ruined by inserting politics. The story did not come to a satisfactory ending. Not very believable plot.

Oh my goodness I didn’t bother finishing the book. Why did you feel you needed to turn it political? I’m reading for relaxation and enjoyment not to read about how you feel about our president! Plus the story does not flow - very poorly written.

This was purchased as a gift for a friend. I loved this book and other Babar stories growing up. It is a sweet story and seemed perfectly fitting to gift to a soon-to-be mom with elephants as the theme for her son. The book itself appears to be made of reasonably high quality materials. The gloss on the pages was shiny, but not too shiny. The cardboard of the pages was sturdy, it feels like it will withstand years of baby and toddler drool and love.

My kids loved Babar books. We even had the stuffed Babar animals. I wasn't sure the elephant family would appeal to my two year old granddaughter. Luckily, it does. She has a lot of books that just sit on the shelf and several that she wants us to read over and over. Luckily, one of the popular books is this one. I am really pleased as I also love this unusual elephant family.

There is nothing like the classic stories for young children. I bought these for my grandchildren (4 and 5) and they love them. Nightly readings include Babar and Madeline. A subtle lesson is in each story and is portrayed in in entertaining manner.

If you don't know Babar, this is a lovely introduction. The story feels very European and somewhat dated, but it's still fun for me to read with my 11 month old daughter.

Old family favorite!!!! Love it

Great quality book! Perfect size.

My granddaughter loved the book about Babar and his children. She is almost 2 years old and just reaching the age where she can follow the plot of a story, and it kept her attention.
