As I've stated in other reviews, I don't care much for modern authors. If seemingly sound in doctrine, they tend to be dead and/or dry, and fond of modern Bible translations based on Roman Catholic forgeries. Thus I tend to stay with the voices from the past, Luther, Tyndale, Calvin, Owen, Gill, etc. The Lord, in His love, grace and mercy still raises up a voice crying in the wilderness from time to time to call the Church to repentance and Biblical living. Michael Bunker is such a voice. This book reads like the Puritan writers of centuries past, powerful, authoritative, and based firmly in scripture. Modern Religious Idols calls us to examine our lives very prayerfully and carefully in the light of God's holy word. All men have erected idols of some sort at some time in their life. Make sure there are none in yours. The scripture commands us to keep ourselves from idols in both testaments, over and over. The Lord doesn't waste His breath or His words. This is obviously a serious problem and not limited to the worship of graven images. And the scripture reminds us that behind the idols are devils (1 Cor. 10:19,20).Many of the modern idols examined in this book are things you probably haven't thought about. This is serious business. I again urge that you read this prayerfully and carefully. Make absolutely sure your relationship with our Holy God is where it ought to be. The scripture says "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves." (2 Cor. 13:5). This book, as well as all Bunker's other nonfictional writings have but one goal, to glorify the Living God who created the heavens, earth and us, and to bring us closer to Him through the truth of God's Holy Word. "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." (1 Thes. 5:21). Books like this, and Bunker's other works are rare. They will feed, convict and edify. I cannot give them a high enough recommendation. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

I bought this work after reading Bunker's Surviving Off Off-Grid: Decolonizing the Industrial Mind. I am interested in Theology from a conservative perspective and found Modern Religious Idols to be a superb book. Mr. Bunker shows that the physical idols of the Old Testament are types for the spiritual idols that most "Christians" hold today. For example, he covers feminization by speaking of the worship given to female deities by ancient pagans and Israel's OT neighbors (who corrupted them into it also) and then shows the feminization of modern males (in the church and society) and the elevating of women to positions of power is nothing but the spiritual manifestation of feminine worship that in days of old was done in a physical way! Mr. Bunker also shows the typology of the Proverbs woman in the attire of an harlot who is on every street corner to apply to apostate modern churches (who claim to be the bride of Christ but are whores against the Lord Jesus). This book will rock the boat among most typical conservative evangelical Christians in 501 (c)(3) churches. Modern "conservatives" are actually so theologically liberal that they will be offended by this book, which teaches truth that was common several centuries ago. Mr. Bunker also incorporates his belief in Christian Agrarian Separatism into this work, and why he believes that it is impossible to do the full will of the Father unless one lives in a simple way that does not rely upon apostate men and their systems for one's basic physical needs/survival. I do not agree with Mr. Bunker on every doctrinal point, but I agree with him on almost everything in this book. This book educated, challenged, and inspired me. It is so good that I have reread parts of it. I have never met Mr. Bunker, but he has taught me more than most preachers that I have met. As Proverbs states, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend". Mr. Bunker's frequent quoting of English Baptist preacher John Gill (1697-1771) has given me the desire to learn more about Gill. I love that Modern Religious Idols only quotes from the King James Bible. Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it to others.

Although brother Bunker's theology is more works based than he will admit to, I found his messages about modern religious idols to be a thought provoking and eye opening experience.Every person who considers themselves to be a Christian should read this book and prayerfully consider what is said.Only gave it 4 stars mainly because his blatant arrogance showed up in several sections of the book where he off handedly insulted and dismissed other believers that either disagreed with him, or did not live the same kind of life style that he has.

This book is an outstanding expose' of some of the most common ways in which modern professing Christians are kept from more perfectly seeing the kingdom of God and entering into it. The material presented in it could change one's life and worldview profoundly, if only it is studied and received with the Spirit's aid in loving the truth. It is a difficult read on several levels: First because it delves deeply into scripture and requires diligent attention, and secondly because it will expose the lies you have believed about yourself, the world and God. One of the most important books few will ever read! Get yourself a copy and pray for the Lord to search your soul and give repentance and healing as needed.

Amazing book! So happy I found it. The author does an incredible job with the honesty and transperency to help people see how getting over some things that maybe they never even thought of could be holding them back. A powerful journey. You def don't have to be a hoarder to benefit from this book! Love it.

I only had to read the introduction to find out what it was I was looking for about the meaning of 'hoarding'. The book is well-designed to be helpful in this category.

A "MUST READ" for EVERYBODY!! --a healing prose for hurts you didn't know you had, (and I am NOT a hoarder). Angel's journey may start out feeling foreign but quickly becomes familiar. I was surprised to find statements of deep insight into my OWN life and habits pop out of the text in this book. Many made me see things I hadn't noticed and some recalled old wounds I thought I had forgotten. Her steps of insight then healing became my own. A book that will sweep you along into understanding, recovery, and wellness right along with the author.

A Room Away From the Wolves, by Nova Ren Suma

Review

“Harks back to Shirley Jackson (a creepy house!), Sir Walter Scott (a cursed opal!), and Henry James (another creepy house!) . . . It’s all mist and mood . . . shiver-inducingly delicious.” —The New York Times Book Review “[Suma’s] narratives are subtle, quicksilver creatures, her language is elegant, and her characters keep more secrets than they reveal. If this book was a dessert, it wouldn't be a chocolate chip cookie or a vanilla birthday cake—it would be an earl grey lavender macaroon, or maybe balsamic fig ice cream.” —NPR “This beautiful story is full of magical-realism and luscious, lyrical writing.” —BuzzFeed “[Suma’s] latest is another masterpiece from the haunting writer.” —Paste Magazine “The tension that builds as this story begins to unfold won’t let you put the book down until you’re tearing through the last page.” —The Nerd Daily “Suma’s dreamy prose builds suspense as she bends reality . . . Give this to readers who prefer their books dark with a hint of the supernatural.” —VOYA Magazine “Nova Ren Suma is a YA horror legend, and in her latest book, A Room Away From The Wolves, she proves her prowess at writing dark, unsettling, page-turning tales” —Bustle   “Nova Ren Suma’s marvelous book is the thrilling and moving story of a young woman’s escape to Gotham and the world she finds there.” —Flavorwire “A gorgeously written and evocative ghost tale set in a storied boardinghouse for troubled young women . . . Suma is a masterly storyteller, here creating a thoroughly unreliable modern narrator in a deliciously creepy gothic haunt. With much to mull over and discuss, this is a taut and nuanced coming-of-age tale perfect for fans of E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars and Meg Wolitzer’s Belzhar.” —Luann Toth, School Library Journal, starred review “Suma’s latest gothic chiller contains all the components her fans have come to expect: an unreliable narrator; a haunted space; fraught, complicated female relationships; and a deliciously dark, moody atmosphere delivered in lyrical and evocative prose.”—The Horn Book Magazine “Terrific . . . A gothic love letter to secret places of New York City and the runaway girls who find them.” —Kelly Link, author of Get in Trouble, 2016 Pulitzer Prize Finalist in Fiction “Suma drapes her dark, enigmatic novel in a gauzy, supernatural veil, under which readers will observe a runaway teen’s search for safety and an understanding of her mother’s past . . . Suma’s surreal writing examines the blurred edges of life, lies, freedom, and mother-daughter relationships, leaving the reader with questions and a tangled sense of wonder.” —Julia Smith for Booklist “Nova Ren Suma surpasses herself with this gorgeously told, mesmerizing, tense and twisted story about the ways in which mothers fail their daughters, the lies that daughters tell their mothers, and the love that girls show one another when all the wolves are closing in.” —Laura Ruby, National Book Award Finalist and Printz-winning author of Bone Gap “Eerie and atmospheric as only Nova Ren Suma can write, A Room Away From the Wolves is a page-turning thrill. Its unforgettable protagonist is cut from the sharpest sentences and the achiest pieces of life—I couldn’t tear my eyes away. Gulp this one down and prepare to be left shivery and spooked and a little bit heartbroken.” —Emily X.R. Pan, New York Times bestselling author of The Astonishing Color of After   “A Room Away From the Wolves had me tight in its grip from page one. It’s a captivating and richly told story of mothers and daughters, of losing and finding one's way—with the most brilliantly executed and unforgettable twists and turns. Bina’s voice recalls the unsettling beauty and verve of characters like Shirley Jackson’s Merricat, but exists as something wholly its own, stunning and true. Don't take a single word of this remarkable book for granted—Nova Ren Suma is a force to be reckoned with. Nobody writes like her.” —Courtney Summers, author of Sadie “A Room Away from the Wolves is a beautifully tangled chain, a modern gothic haunting by one of our masters.” —Elana K. Arnold, author of What Girls Are Made Of “This urban fable is a marvel of mood and magic.” —Melissa Albert for B&N Teen   “I’d tell you how lovely the writing is, how smoothly crafted, and how haunting, but does Nova Ren Suma ever provide anything that isn’t?” —Dahlia Adler for B&N Teen

Here was Catherine House, same as my mother described in all her stories. The gate was open, but I wasn’t sure if I should walk in. “Do you live here?” a woman said to me, her voice grim. She noticed my suitcase. “You’re moving in. Don’t. If I were your mother, I’d tell you to go home. Right now.”

I saw someone give the same headline for this book and give it a 3-Star review. It works just as well for a 5-star review. If you like your stories thrat make you think, get you to blink back tears, and would like to be struck by vivid prose, then you won’t be disappointed. A little about ghosts, but mostly about friendships and what it means to be your mother’s daughter. I wish this book existed when I was a teen.

I've heard people occasionally describe a book as delicious, and it always makes me laugh because I don't usually equate stories with that form of consumption. But this book! This is a sumptuous read, a banquet of warm, dark breezes and mysterious spaces, interesting characters and fraught relationships so delicately woven in and revealed. I don't reread a lot of books, but this one I most definitely will.

Beautiful, dark and melancholy—Nova Ren Suma has an uncanny ability to write difficult characters in all their stunning, scarred, poetic selves. Bravo!

I can’t stop thinking about this book. As soon as I finished it, I wanted to go back and read it again.

Atmospheric and creepy. A love letter to New York City.

This is such an odd book and it’s hard to review without giving away the secrets. Bina’s mom makes her leave her home. She says it’s just for a month with friends, but Bina has another idea. She remembers stories her mom told her about a boarding house in New York. Her mom lived there while auditioning to be an actress. Her stories of freedom and having her own room appealed to Bina. After leaving her father, Bina’s mom met a man right away and moved in with him. He also had two daughters and Bina didn’t get along with them. There were lies and fights. Bina had enough and left after getting beat up at a party. When she arrived at The Catherine House, there was a girl that Bina was drawn to. Monet was different and she told stories like Bina did. There were rules in the house including a strict curfew and no men upstairs. The house started to almost feel alive. Catherine’s ghost was there and the girls were determined to get her to speak to them. They believed Bina was the key. When away close to curfew, Bina could feel the house pulling her back. She didn’t see anyone prepare her food. And the girls started talking to her like she should know more than she did.Things were odd and I could figure out that this was a ghost story. But I wasn’t sure who or what was real. Parts of the story were a bit slow paced, but there were other parts that I didn’t want to put down. I couldn’t wait to get to the ending to figure out if I was right on anything that I thought.I gave this book 4 stars for a beautifully written ghost story. I loved the setting of The Catherine House.Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy for review.

I am such a fan of Nova Ren Suma’s writing. It’s always gorgeous and perpetually confusing and I just LOVE it.A Room Away From the Wolves is honestly no different. This story follows Bina, short for Sabina, who suddenly finds herself kicked out of her own home (temporarily). And it’s nothing new – when she was little, she and her mother ran away and began their own hitchhiking journey. Eighteen years ago, Bina’s mother had taken refuge at Catherine House. Now, Bina returns, but she finds that there are things about the house – and about her mother – that she never knew.Nova Ren Suma’s writing style has consistently been one of my favorites, especially when it comes to magical realism type stories – she does a great job balancing concrete and abstract language, which is even more powerful because I found myself questioning it all – Is it real? Is it in the character’s head? The plot is magical, and I’ve finished reading the book, true. But I’m still confused, and in a good way. This is one of those books you’d want to reread immediately after, because you hope that maybe the second time around, you’ll get more answers. A Room Away From the Wolves filled me with the best kind of trepidation.Bina is an extremely flawed main character, and that’s good because it’s more realistic, and yet because of that I found myself frustrated at her actions, while still symp/empathizing with her. There were definitely other characters that I wanted to know more about and wanted to see more of, but this book does leave room for lots of imagination.Other than that, I would recommend this book to readers of magical realism and fantasy – it’s got a mysterious vibe to it while simultaneously being able to juggle a setting in the contemporary world.

I think the casual, non-scholarly reader will be frustrated by long passages that serve to fix the location using dozens of place names, in two or more languages. Sometimes the linguistic geography lessons will go on for pages, and though it's invaluable information, it's frankly impossible to comprehend without taking notes or having some familiarity with the area. When he does describe daily events in plain English the writing is genuine and the feeling transcends the century-long gap between that age, and today. In the back of the book is a transcript of Ownen's daily diary. It reads like a ship's log, and I found this useful for following the story across a map.I enjoyed the book very much, but I can see why it's not a popular adventure tale. It's very much as if he were writing to a globe-trotting college chum using causal 1920s parlance. You have to be okay with delving into chinese history and 1920's politics of inner mongolia. It's not really written for a popular audience that wants a classic story arc.Lots of caravan action- but that's maybe 30% of the scope of this book.

Owen Lattimore, the successively famous Chinese and Mongolian scholar and much debated presumptive "comunist agent" of the McCartney period, wrote this book in 1927 after his incredible caravan voyage along the then unmapped "Winding Road" in Inner Mongolia of 1926. The reason for this ethnological feat was the Author's convinction that caravan days were going to disappear with the progress beeing made in China by railways and roads and as he puts it: "I wanted to feel the strange and actual life of the past which we usually accept without thought as the dead background of our present". The choice of the Winding Road instead of the more common and mapped Silk Road routes was determined by the then dangerous traveling conditions due to war going on in China. Lattimore's intention must be kept in mind while reading this exquisite work. Many of the apparent drawbacks of the book such as the excessive detail in the use of foreign toponyms, the frequent digressions into prices of wares, habits of people, legends and stories related to places are in reality a treasure of knwoledge that has been preserved for ever. However, the "winding" of Lattimore's prose and thoughts does not hinder the enjoyability of this adventure, because the Desert Road is an adventure book of the best tradition. The adventure of a smart and curious and brave young man that is completely engrossed in his dream but at the same times does not recoil from living and learning from the men he travels with. The characters such as Moses, the Villainous Camel Puller and Wa-wa, the Eldest Son of the House of Chou are etched with great care and deep understanding and even if there are no "strong episodes", the interactions among them is interesting to follow and works like the backbone of the story. But the real magic of the book is the description of the days, the atmospheres and the landscapes, the animals (camels and others), the physical excertion and the the inconveniences and the moments of joy and peace. The Black Gobi is looming in the back of the whole story with its camel skeletons and buried water wells. The book also offers many photographs shot by the Author that illustrate significant episodes and people.I think this book is an indispensable read in the approach to Inner Mongolia and its traditions and represents at the same time a specialistic and a non-specilistic historical document that will not be forgotten like many other travel books of those times.P.S. If one is curious on the House of the False Lama (see the more recent George Crane's Beyond the House of the False Lama) in the DRTT you can find many answers. The introduction by the Author's son David Lattimore helps to contextualize the book and gives many useful information for cross-references.

A wonderful book describing a journey of incredible difficulty undertaken by a lone American about 90 years ago, who hired himself some camels and walked across the Gobi Desert by himself.

This book is probably is as interesting as being Owen Lattimore's first book as for its content. It basically represents the starting point of Lattimore's career as a traveler/scholar. At the time (1926), he was a twenty-something "native son" of the Euro-American expat community of China's "treaty ports": born in the US but raised in China son of a China-based American professor, a fluent Chinese speaker, and a successful young employee of some kind of wool trading business. But one day, on a business trip to Baotou (the railhead in Inner Mongolia) he made a momentous decision: to hire a few camels and a "camel man" to manage them, and to make his way along the China-Mongolia's border to Central Asia. And so he did, a few months later, despite the fighting warlords and the predatory tax collectors of the desert. Unlike the "famous explorer" preceding him, he did not have a staff of servants and a caravan of his own; rather, he, with his old family servant and his hired camel man joined one of many caravans plying the road between the Eastern China and Xinjiang along the "Winding Road" of the Gobi, avoiding the customs extortions of both the newly independent Outer Mongolia and the warlord governments of various Chinese provinces. Having to move along with trade caravans, Lattimore regretted his inability to make detours to various sites of interest away from the main route; but, on the other hand, spending 5 months walking and living along with the people and camels of the Gobi allowed him an unparalleled opportunity to learn about their way of life and their view of the world. Did you know that the camel pullers were able to supplement their income by spinning yarn and then knitting or crocheting socks or scarves while walking along their camels, the animals readily supplying any wool they needed? Or that Gansu migrants to a small oasis in Xinjiang, not having professional Taoist priests, would be able to carry out necessary rituals in the community's Taoist shrine using their own joint efforts? Minor details - what one did with oatmeal to make it more edible, or how much one would have to pay for a sheep - may be boring for some readers, but put together they give a realistic feeling of what it was like to live in that time and place. The world of the people of the desert was a cruel world, and Lattimore's era was far from "political correctness" of any kind. But he was able to understand the common humanity of all of us, and to share his insights with his readers.

This is a good book by a great man on a very important topic.Your children will study Andy Stern as the most important labor leader in the 20th century. Cesar Chavez got the postage stamp, but Andy built a far bigger, stronger, and better labor union. He was not afraid to make enemies in doing this -- and he has acquired more than a few here in Southern California. This is the book that anyone who knows him would expect him to write on universal basic income: methodical, impassioned, with a clear point of view.1. If you know the debate, you can just read Chapter 8, which is worth the price of the book. The first 2/3 of the book is prelude to this -- not a great structure. Andy probably made his kids wait for dessert, although in this case, chewing through seven chapters of broccoli is worth it.2. Tasty though the veggies are, the prelude makes arguments that are not vital to the solution. Will technology create more jobs or wipe out more? Is employment becoming more fractured and contingent? Does college matter or not? There are intelligent people who support UBI on both sides of these debates. You may have a view, but you don't need one to engage in the UBI discussion, which attracts adherents and detractors left and right, optimist and pessimist, globalist and nationalist, labor market traditionalists and radicals, etc.3. The book makes a stronger case for basic income than for universal basic income. Why, precisely, should the children of Bill Gates get $1,000 per month from taxpayers? "Because it is too complicated to do it any other way" is not a super convincing answer.4. As you might expect, Andy is at his best campaigning for bold new ideas. He runs a close second best when making the moral case for his policy. Third would be economics, which he uses instrumentally: a crutch not a flashlight. Fourth, by quite a bit, is technology, where he is easily gobsmacked (not always without reason, but always uncritically).5. Like many public figures who have taken a deeply personal beating or ten, he really cannot write about himself, which is too bad. He has had a consequential and interesting life, played a key role in shaping Obamacare, built SEIU into America's biggest union, depending on how you keep score, and had the huevos to break with his mentor and split the AFL-CIO for good reason. Will unions take up the cause of UBI? Will Democrats? How does someone go from the Simpson Bowles commission on entitlement reform, to proposing a multi-trillion dollar entitlement? WTF was the point of the fight with UNITE?Waiting for the memoir.....

Andy Stern, former President of the Service Employees International Union, has always been a visionary. When I worked as a consultant to SEIU in the early years of the millenium, he asked our interdisciplinary team of change agents to help him re-envision the way a union Local operates, to help empower leaders and to shift from defense to offense, to view their mission as broader and bolder than collective bargaining. He was looking for a paradigm change because he could see that the union movement was shrinking and would be even more imperiled in the future. He anticipated future trends and was open to radical new ideas. He even led his union OUT of the AFL-CIO because of it. He takes this sensibility into his new book, Raising the Floor. The argument he makes is simple but compelling. With the rapid explosion of technological progress and the digitalization of work, we are faced in the near future the possibility that upwards to 47% of current jobs will be eliminated. He discusses at length the uncoupling of wages and jobs from economic growth (stagnant wages and the "jobless recovery"), the meteoric rise of so-called contingent work (freelance, temp, 1099, piecework, entrepreneurial, etc.) to currently constitute 34% of today's workforce, and the race to the bottom for American workers as a result of globalization as even college graduates nowadays are no longer able to expect a "wage premium" by virtue of their degree. Automation is taking away jobs or components of jobs of the skilled as well as the unskilled, the college grad as well as the high school dropout.. The trend is gaining speed so that we are at an "inflection point" of seeing a progressive and catastrophic loss of jobs, the demeaning of work, and the descent of millions of Americans into economic insecurity and frank poverty. Traditional liberal solutions like a stronger safety net and/or raising the minimum wage are insufficient holding actions. He argues for a Universal Basic Income--a cash payment to each and every American regardless of what they do -- or don't do-for it as the only thing that makes sense in a world in which the traditional employer-based job is disappearing and freelance contingent work is becoming the (unreliable) norm. He spells out how it would work and begins to sketch out how to get it enacted. It appeals to conservatives because it gets rid of welfare as we know it (read the book for details) and liberals because it goes a long way to ending poverty. It also points toward a new American Dream in which, because one has basic economic security needs met, one can pursue ones dreams and passions in both private and public life, more freely.Stern has done us a big favor with this book. I never really bought into the "automation will be the death of us" line until reading Stern's arguments and evidence carefully. Now I believe it. And I didn't really ever understand the mechanics of a Universal Basic Income, thinking it bizarrely unreasonable and political kryptonite until reading Stern's analysis how its appeal to the Right as well as the Left. Now I think it' should be at the top of our progressive agenda. Kudos to Stern and this terrific, readable, persuasive book!

Andy Stern first reviews the personal and professional journey that has led him to this point, as a labor leader and more recently an investigator of the effect of modern technology on the American work force. The chart on page 30 really tells it all: The wages of the median American household has been FLAT since the mid 1970s while productivity has climbed! Chapter by chilling chapter, he details the trends. People no longer can depend on regular jobs, they work as freelancers, but here they compete with people from foreign countries who (with much lower costs of living) can charge much less. A college education no longer means a useful career, more and more of our children cannot pay back college loans. Automation will wipe out most jobs within decades. Currently popular politicians - Trump, Sanders, are popular simply because people know that they are getting poorer while only the top few per cent are getting richer. He proposes a Universal Basic Income (UBI) of about $1000 per month for each adult, total cost of $2.7 trillion. This would be partly paid for by replacing every existing antipoverty program (food stamps, etc.), for a total of $1 trillion. He says that the solutions currently proposed, e.g., minimum wages, college support, will be helpful only in the short term; in the long run, only a UBI will work as a structural solution to the problem of the lack of work for the average person in the digital age.
