In Extremis: The Life and Death of the War Correspondent Marie Colvin, by Lindsey Hilsum

Review

"An extraordinary account of one reporter’s fearless and ultimately fatal dedication . . . Hilsum draws an empathetic portrait of a woman whose courage often crossed into recklessness, both in combat zones and outside them . . . Thanks to Hilsum’s deeply reported and passionately written book, [Colvin] has the full accounting that she deserves." --Joshua Hammer, The New York Times Book Review"Colvin’s life has been memorably chronicled by Hilsum . . . it is Hilsum’s biography, written by a woman who both knew Colvin and had access to her unpublished reporting notes and private diaries―a trove of some three hundred notebooks―that seems to most closely capture her spirit." --Jon Lee Anderson, The New Yorker "Magnificent and moving . . . [Hilsum] captures the clashing extremes of Colvin's life." --Jill Dougherty, The Washington Post"Hilsum writes with admiration and compassionate understanding of her colleague . . . Journalists will devour Hilsum's book, but will others? They should: with Marie's story, Hilsum opens doors through which many would not peep." --Ed Vulliamy, The New York Review of Books“In Extremis is the best biography I’ve read in what seems like ages . . . Hilsum brilliantly synthesizes it all, separating wheat from chaff and building a portrait of a remarkable and somewhat troubled woman." --Curt Schleier, Minneapolis Star-Tribune"Extraordinarily intimate. . . Hilsum evokes a martyr in slow motion." --Megan K. Stack, Bookforum (cover review) "One of the best biographies I have read about any journalist . . . What makes the biography and the life on which it is based so impressive is the truly heroic proportions of Colvin’s dedication to getting the story of human beings trapped in war . . . Hilsum weaves the accomplishments into the personal story." --Charles Glass, The Intercept"Absorbing and meticulously researched." --Paul Alexander, Newsday"What ultimately emerges from In Extremis is a generous, complicated, brave, vivacious, fully alive woman, consummately committed to her work." --Stephanie Sy-Quia, Los Angeles Review of Books"A wonderful book ― a fitting tribute, certainly, but also a well-told tale of a remarkable life." --Jane Bonham Carter, Sunday Times (U.K.)"Marie Colvin was a one-off, eccentric, brilliant and sometimes maddening. Lindsey Hilsum does her justice." --Robert Fox, Evening Standard (U.K.)"[In Extremis] succeeds brilliantly in honouring a brave and hugely influential journalist, while allowing the real woman, with all her strength, intelligence and human frailty, to shine through . . . Gripping and very moving." --Susan Flockhart, The National (Scotland)"There are times when the book risks becoming a hagiography, but Hilsum avoids this by combining storytelling with asking important questions about what kind of service war correspondents perform and what ethical codes they should adhere to." --Lara Feigel, The Guardian (U.K.)"[An] intimate biography." --The Economist "Hilsum is able to portray Colvin in remarkable fullness . . . a rip-roaring life rendered extremely well." --Kirkus (starred review)"Hilsum . . . has done a masterful job of telling Colvin's story. This is riveting personal and professional history, told with skill and sincerity . . . Hilsum has created something truly worthy of her subject, a biography that reads like high adventure, a masterwork that will draw well-deserved attention to a heroic witness." ―Colleen Mondor, Booklist (starred review)"This unputdownable account will inspire future journalists, especially women, and should find wide audiences among those interested in global crises and international affairs." --Karl Helicher, Library Journal (starred review)“Writing a biography of Marie Colvin is like capturing lightning in a bottle, but Lindsey Hilsum has the knowledge and personal experience to help us understand what drew Colvin to rush towards the eye of the storm at such great risk.” ―Annie Lennox“One of the modern world’s most experienced and admired foreign correspondents, Lindsey Hilsum has now written a riveting, intimate, and deeply moving account of the epic life of her late friend and colleague, Marie Colvin. In the tradition of Martha Gellhorn, her fellow American and ultimate heroine and role model, Colvin sought to bear witness and write well about the world’s most troubled places, and for twenty-five years she did just that, over and over again, going in deep and staying too long in a dozen conflicts from Libya and Lebanon to Kosovo, and from Iraq to Afghanistan and East Timor. She lost an eye in Sri Lanka, and eventually her life in Syria, and she will be long remembered―not least because of Hilsum’s fine work in this book― as one of the great war reporters of her generation.” ―Jon Lee Anderson, author of The Fall of Baghdad

Loved this autobiography. Marie Colvin is a very inspirational wonder in many ways, but this story is warts and all and beautifully written. Would recommend it highly, for those wanting inspiration to live a big and full life, above and beyond our fears... and the repercussions of that in the realm she operated in. Great read, great woman, great story, great author and perspective.

Since at least the days of the Crimean and American Civil Wars, front-line correspondents conveyed some of the drama and agony of conflict to readers worldwide. The genre’s influence probably peaked during the Vietnam conflict as print and photojournalism was supplemented by near real-time television footage. When “the most trusted man in America”, Walter Cronkite of CBS News, assessed Vietnam as a lost cause after the Tet Offensive, Lyndon Johnson reportedly commented, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost America.” With the advent of social media, those days are long gone, but war correspondents – driven by adrenaline or advocacy – live on.Marie Colvin, American born but working for British publications, reported from the front lines in Europe, the Middle East and East Asia. Her ambitious and driven personality certainly deserves memorialization, but this biography does not do her justice. Author Lindsey Hilsum is the International Editor for Channel 4 News in England and her book reads much like a human interest TV feature. Seemingly, Hilsum has never found a platitude she isn’t fond of, nor a hackneyed adjective to omit. Disproportionate emphasis is given to romances, alcohol, cigarettes, Yale, makeup, commentary on the dated appearance of Laura Ashley dresses, yachts and other silly bric-à -brac accumulated along the path to fame. The evident goal is to create an inspirational work and encourage readers to “live life to its fullest”, as did Colvin. It's a "You Go, Girl" sorta book."Extremis" drifts along (somewhat like Marie herself) until the final chapters where the pace picks up. Hilsum finally includes relevant excerpts from Colvin’s own work. This alleviates the tedium imparted by the author’s previous reliance on innumerable anecdotes, banal asides and fluffy facts (do we really need to know what brand of underwear Colvin preferred? her shopping preferences?) These distract from the narrative and end up trivializing the subject.Contextualizing the role of war correspondents and delving further into Colvin’s motives would relieve some of the superficiality of this book. This could have been achieved by in-depth interviews with friends, family and colleagues. Why are war correspondents important in the current media milieu? Do war reports really alter the trajectory of conflict or are these pieces more "If it bleeds, it leads" fodder for enhancing sales. The impression of “padding” the narrative to achieve an easy, book-length report lingers around the margins, this due to the immense amount of trivia, much of which could have been edited without detriment to the story and helped answer some of these important questions.Marie Colvin contributed significantly to front-line reporting by dramatizing the plight of non-combatants: that seems to be one of her prime contributions. She demonstrates that there is more to the undertaking than owning a social media account and a smartphone. Why not emphasize that aspect of her biography instead of dwelling on the Hemingway/Gellhorn alcohol-soaked, macho-meets-feminist romantic angles? Is her stature the equivalent to Bernard Fall? Max Hastings? What's the difference between a military memoir (written by, for example, a combat veteran on a particular campaign or encounter) and a war correspondent? How does the role of a journalist like Colvin differ from a military historian, one who interviews and reports on civilian and combatant perspectives? You'll never know about any of that if you rely on this biography to be educated and informed. This sympathetic but superficial portrait generally fails to adequately memorialize Colvin's journalism. The book is adequate but just so. Perhaps a more definitive work by a skilled biographer will help Colvin assume her rightful place in combat journalism.

Read the book in 2 days. Very well written.

A brilliant deep dive into the lives of one of her generation's greatest foreign correspondents. Thoroughly and extensively researched, written with a beautiful direct and elegant style. A book that will stand the test of time along with the great works on journalists. A wonderful reporter and incidentally, a woman! Thankyou Marie Colvin. Thankyou Lindsey Hilsum.

I saw the movie "A Private War" which inspired me to buy the book. This was an excellent read and riveting.

A riveting true life story about the brave, bold journalist Marie Colvin. The risks she took to tell the story of people in war zones during horrific crises around the world, came from her deep compassion, & need for action on behalf of the most vulnerable. She was an adventurous woman, & a gifted journalist ~ I enjoyed reading about her life. Her personal challenges make her sympathetic, & show the strength she had from childhood to her last days.

Colvin's bravery serves as a role model for all of us. I will use this book in a women's history class in the spring.

An honest bio of bad ass Marie Colvin; her work vs. her mess of private life. her haunts, her habits, her determination. One of the most acclaimed journalists of all times, Colvin's life just adds to the read of a woman in control of everything but herself. I loved, loved, loved this book.

The introduction to this book lays out a good premise, but honestly I couldn't make it through the first chapter which was filled with nuggets of critical scholarship and liberal theology. For some I'm sure that will be a plus. For me it was enough to realize that I have enough stress in my life that I don't need to deal with the stress of reading a book I have to argue with on every page.Page 8 ... after recounting the description of Solomon's temple and how everything was made of gold or covered with gold ... "the temple was clearly intended to reflect on honor on Solomon and on his regime." He's arguing here on the basic of the 1st commandment and that the gold in the temple was intended to be satisfying a consumerist desire by Solomon rather than trying to create something that was breathtakingly beautiful in worship of our glorious God. (And where did the gold come from, anyway?)Page 8 ... very next paragraph. "In the modern world, Karl Marx reflected most deeply on the compelling power of commodity." I don't know how many people will consider Karl Marx to be a great authority. How does the one who called religion the opiate of the masses suddenly become an authority on the proper interpretation of the first commandment and a Christian view of possessions?Page 9 ... Brueggemann refers to Deuteronomy as "what is likely a late exposition of the first two commandments." In other words, Deuteronomy was not written by Moses, but is a much later work. For those who hold to Biblical inerrancy this is unacceptable. Matthew 19:7-8 and Romans 10:19 both clearly attribute Deuteronomy to Moses. 1 Kings 2:3 seems to attribute at least Deut 17:14-20 to Moses.Page 12 ... "The reality of restlessness in our contemporary society is obvious and epidemic. The identification of that restlessness perhaps goes back to the categories of Martin Luther concerning 'faith and works,' with the accent on 'works' indicating the need to produce, perform, and qualify for the goodness of God. It is an easy move to take that Reformation accent on 'works' and see in our current social restlessness evidence of not yet being good enough or having done enough." .... WHERE TO EVEN BEGIN? How does anybody read Luther (or any of the Reformers) and come away with man's need to qualify for the goodness of God? That is the exact OPPOSITE of Luther and Calvin and their constant drum beat of grace, grace, grace, grace. I think that here Brueggemann is taking Weber's fallacious and discredited theory of the 'Protestant Work Ethic' and presenting that as the actual view of the Reformers. If Brueggemann can get so much wrong in the first 12 pages of the book, I had no interest in finishing the book. And in fact, I have no interest in anybody else reading it either. The book didn't go up for sale ... it went straight in the garbage.

We read this book as a Lenten book study in our church. It is a short book full of thought provoking ideas. The author writes about the importance of Sabbath in this busy world in which we live and the resistance of Sabbath by society. In addition he provides a fascinating look at the Ten Commandments in the light of Sabbath. I recommend this book to everyone who struggles to rest and still the mind; isn't that all of us?

This book is one of the most informative books about what God expects each one of us to do in obeying His commandment “To remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it Holy.” The Sabbath is a Holy Day, not a holiday.

So relevant to how we are living and the changes that need to be made personally, and within society.

dry

Great book

In 105 pages the author covers more ground ibn more detail than some authors do in 305 pages. Looking at the commandment "Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy" he shows how this is a radical new idea. Moses is telling a generation of people who only have heard of Egypt to rebel and do absolutely nothing more than rest. Even he Animals ae o rest. Rest means rest - no cooking, feeding and watering animals, thee are no bricks to make and it's not necessary to even dreams of such a things. Sabbath means TOTAL rest. Wile /Brueggeman is not verbose, he is a typical German theologian who never uses one word when five will suffice!

Well written, good things to say. The think I didn't like was each topic in each chapter is usually stressed 3 times, so each chapter could have been 1/3 the size and still conveyed the essential message

Cultural Issues in Play Therapy

Review

"This volume helps therapists develop a culturally sensitive approach to their practice of play therapy with children from diverse ethnic and cultural groups living in the United States today. It is an important and timely resource for all therapists who work with young children, regardless of disciplinary background or theoretical orientation."--Charles E. Schaefer, PhD, Department of Psychology, Fairleigh Dickinson University"This valuable text is packed with useful information that will guide and inspire play therapists who treat children from diverse cultural backgrounds. The book admirably succeeds in translating knowledge about different cultures into clear and sensitive practice principles. It will serve as an essential and welcome resource for students and professionals who use play therapy in their work with children in schools, hospitals, clinics, and private practice settings."--Nancy Boyd Webb, DSW, BCD, RPT-S, Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service"This book is an invaluable resource for play therapists and trainees as well as other professionals who work with children and families whose cultural backgrounds are different from their own. Designed to acquaint the reader with a variety of ethnic groups, the book also demonstrates the variations that exist within the groups themselves. The highly knowledgeable authors encourage therapists to learn as much as possible about the populations they serve in order to provide effective help for those who may be struggling with acculturation, language skills, prejudice, and other issues. Numerous resources are listed that can further inform and sensitize us to cultural concerns in clinical practice. This is a landmark book for therapists and for students entering the field, and should be on hand at every play therapy training site."--Lois Carey, LCSW, BCD, RPT-S, private practice, Upper Grandview, New York"This book fills a crucial void in the play therapy literature. The range of diversity of this book mirrors the ever-expanding diversity of America, and the cultural groups with the fastest growth projections are given detailed coverage. Featuring outstanding chapter contributions by knowledgeable and experienced clinicians, the book is well researched and includes interesting and rich case examples. In addition, practical information about culturally sensitive toys and where to get them will be a huge benefit to play therapists. Gil and Drewes are to be commended for this sensitive, vitally needed, and comprehensive work."--David A. Crenshaw, PhD, RPT-S, private practice, Rhinebeck, New York"This book is full of valuable information, offering many useful ideas about the increasingly diverse child populations who come, or are sent to, American mental health services. It offers extensive information on the meaning of play to African-American, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American populations in a structured and clear manner....There is much to be learned about cultural differences in play and play therapy from this information-rich volume. It will also be useful to professionals of many disciplines teaching child development in an increasingly multicultural world." (Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal 2006-07-23)"This book provides an informative, helpful 'wake-up call' for play therapists to be culturally competent, not just culturally sensitive....The editors and contributing authors present literature reviews, play therapy strategies, case illustrations, and a sensitive portrayal of various different cultures and applicable approaches....This book is a great resource for multicultural competent play therapy strategies, and a sensitive exploration of the role of cultural similarities and differences in play therapy." (Journal of Child and Family Studies 2006-07-23)"This book is a wonderful addition to the library for anyone who works with children whether in play therapy or not. It is enormously helpful in terms of approaches that are respectful towards children from several cultures. It is a good tool for all helping professionals as a reference in thinking about interacting with families from differing racial/ethnic backgrounds. The section on typical parenting practices alone is worth the price of the book. The discerning descriptions of parent-child interactions paint pictures that can guide practitioners away from ethnocentric thinking and towards understanding the variables attendant on the child's background and worldview." I bought this book for an upcoming conference, featuring Eliana Gil. During my undergraduate studies, I spent a year interning with a play therapy clinic, studying play therapy across a variety of cultures and settings. Later in my graduate program, I focused my studies learning how culture affects all aspects when working with children and their families. Personally, I am a HUGE fan of Eliana Gil and own most of her books in my personal collection. After hearing Eliana speak and reading this book, I cannot express the importance of culture and how much culture affects every aspect of our lives. This book really hones in on that aspect as well as discussing the cultural issues that can arise in play therapy. Eliana offers several perspectives of how culture impacts work with families in play therapy as well as several views on how to help reduce these issues. I feel that reading this book will help anyone working with families, ESPECIALLY in a play therapy setting, to realize the importance of culture and how to reduce cultural issues with these families. This is a MUST HAVE for any clinician or student of play therapy! Very valuable resource!!

This book was recommended to me by my professor in a class for Trauma and Crisis Intervention. It far exceeded my expectations in most ways. The four usual cultural groups were covered but there are minorities in the United States that are never mentioned in any of the literature, and this was no exception. I guess that to be considered a minority, the group must have other attributions than being a minority by percentage in the United States. Someday, I would like to see groups other than Latinos, African Americans, Asians, and Pacific Islanders included in the mixture of what a minority is. That would be true cultural sensitivity and diversity! Nevertheless, this is a terrific book which every serious therapist who deals with children should have.

Eliana Gil has done her usual wonderful job of bringing to the forefront all those diverse issues that are necessary for a Clinical Therapist to realize when working with different cultures - in addressing the arena of play therapy through a cultural lens Eliana has again helped us to ponder necessary issues. A book worth getting and referring to again and again.

I had to buy this book for my play therapy class, but it has been an interesting read and gives a lot of insight into how culture affects play therapy and how professionals should be culturally competent.

Barbed-Wire Imperialism: Britain's Empire of Camps, 1876-1903 (Berkeley Series in British Studies)

Review

"This erudite book is a brilliant contribution to our understanding of imperial modalities of domination and discipline through ostensibly humanitarian means." (Times Higher Education)"This is a fascinating account that describes the forces that created and maintained camp networks within the British empire without losing sight of the human suffering of those interned." (LSE Review of Books)"Closely reasoned and meticulously researched . . . Aidan Forth makes a compelling argument for revisiting the imperial origins of the concentration camp and for reassessing its significance, not just within the context of the Anglo-Boer War but as a historical phenomenon that concerns and troubles us all." (Times Literary Supplement)"This provocative and ambitious new book . . . is admirably precise in establishing a historically grounded genealogy for camps . . . [it is] beautifully written history." (Journal of British Studies)"A work of exceptional synthesis that upends much of the received wisdom. . . . Barbed-Wire Imperialism shows us how remarkable and complex is the legacy of South Africa’s concentration camps in the larger histories of the camp and internment, humanitarianism, and colonial counterinsurgency, and how deeply connected India was to the camp’s wartime development.” (African Historical Review)“Fascinating insight into why camps continued to be regarded as useful institutions long after the end of the Anglo-Boer War…[and] a fine illustration of transnational . . . transfer at work.” (Journal of Interdisciplinary History)"An excellent original study whose significance goes beyond its empirical findings. In an exemplary way, [Forth] takes the imperial camp system as an interpretive prism to give the reader deeper insights into the British imperial mindset."   (H-Net)"Original and persuasive…astute and erudite....Forth brilliantly demonstrates the criss-cross movements of ideas, personnel, and practices between colony and metropolis and between different colonies." (American Historical Review)

From the Inside Flap

"This book is highly original, timely, and overdue in the best sense of that word. No one has undertaken to show how and why the concentration camp as a form and as an ideology emerged as a constituent part of imperial governance. As with all good histories that begin by examining phenomena cloaked in 'state of exception' arguments, this one reveals the commonplace character of camps in several, often linked, spaces of imperial dominion and settlement."—Antoinette Burton, author of The Trouble with Empire: Challenges to Modern British Imperialism "This important book foregrounds the importance of violence, confinement, and coercion in Britain’s Victorian empire. Through a meticulously detailed, comparative study, Aidan Forth restores to history the lives and worlds of the ten million colonized subjects who were interned in famine, plague, and concentration camps across British India and South Africa. Turning on the concept of the ‘disaster imperialism’ of famine, plague, and war, Barbed-Wire Imperialism confronts key concerns of global and imperial history: transfers of power and knowledge, trans-imperial connections, governance and governmentality, and liberalism and empire. It also creates a useable past that is of vital relevance in the world today."—Clare Anderson, author of Subaltern Lives: Biographies of Colonialism in the Indian Ocean World, 1790-1920 "Barbed-Wire Imperialism is a model study of biopolitical governance, but it goes far beyond the usual case studies of biopolitical institutions to make connections between metropolitan workhouse discipline, India’s famine camps, and Boer War concentration camps. Well written and compelling, bold in scope yet nuanced in analysis, Forth’s study changes our understanding of the British Empire."—Anna Clark, author of Alternative Histories of the Self: A Cultural History of Sexuality and Secrets "Aidan Forth's study takes us further in the pursuit of understanding the history of the British camps of famine, plague, and the Anglo-Boer War (Britain's nineteenth-century 'empire of camps'), and in a fascinating way opens up new avenues of research on a sensitive topic.—Fransjohan Pretorius, author of A to Z of the Anglo-Boer War "Responses to war, plague, and famine come under critical scrutiny in Aidan Forth's insightful and innovative investigation of civilian confinement camps in high imperial India and South Africa. In tracing crucial lines of connectivity across the Indian Ocean, Forth sheds fresh light on imperial biopolitics, state coercion and sanitary expertise, the control of 'dangerous bodies,' and suffering and colonial subjects. At the same time, by showing the constraints on imperial excess and questioning the presumed legacies of imperial concentration camps, he revalidates the concept of 'liberal empire.' Assiduous research and attention to detail allied to recognition of global trends make this empire history at its most compelling."—David Arnold, Professor Emeritus University of Warwick

Guide to Fly Fishing in Colorado, by Jackson Streit

Review

The only really wordy aspect of the very informative paperback book, Jackson Streit's No Nonsense Guide to Fly Fishing In Colorado is its title. The rest is a crisp, concise, map-illustrated blue print for fishing 19 trout streams and several lakes. Headed for the Blue River? The Rio Grande? The Fryingpan? If you want to know the key access areas, insect hatches and patterns to use - and even some of the most productive runs - on one of Streit's selected public waters, this book is worth the money. It's particularly worth it if the anger isn't intimately familiar with the stream in question. Streit has more than a passing familiarity with the needs of Colorado fly anglers. Owner of the Mountain Angler shop in Breckenridge, Streit has 22 years experience fishing and guiding in Colorado. He fishes an average of 100 days a year. "We maintain that fly fishers, of all abilities, need a quick, clear understanding of a fly fishing water and then, away they go," said David Banks, publisher of the 78 page book. "The maps are tidy versions of the maps Jackson would draw if you asked him how to get to a particular spot." -- Bob Saile, Denver Post 06/21/95
