Cesar writings and DVD'S guided me to train my first pitbull rescue to be an ambassador for the breed! I made the decision to change training to so called "positive reinforcement" for my 2nd pitbull rescue and that lasted about 6 days. My cute 6 month old pitbull turned into an out of control over excited nightmare that could sit, down, stay etc.. but not chill.I went back to old faithful and purchased this book for a reminder course. 48 hours later I'm laying on my couch with my 6 month old pitbull puppy chilling out next to me writing this review. Thank god for Cesar....

I purchased this book, not really needing a list of 98 tips for my dog, but thinking that might be a nice format for a change in a selection of dog training books I’m reading in advance of our new family member. Well, I’m not putting the book down able to take any tips in particular. A few principles, maybe. If you want a book that is part dog training philosophy and part human self help, this book is for you. I appreciate where Cesar Milan is coming from with this book, albeit a bit self indulgent. He certainly needed a cathartic journalling experience. And although I agree with having an understanding of pack leadership as a starting point with dog training, I don’t think it’s the only consideration, and believe that the evolution of how humans have bred dogs might have mixed things up a bit for his overwhelming firm philosophy. I’m not super appreciative of his easy dismissal of an alternative, it just makes his job super easy. An interesting read, but don’t start and end here for dog training.

If you've watched his TV show you probably already know the vast majority of this stuff. I did pick up a few new things. For instance, there is a very detailed explanation of EXACTLY how to walk your dog which is one of the most critical aspects of training. There is a chapter on misbehaving which was particularly useful in which he addresses overexcitment, aggression, anxiety, fear of loud noises, running away, obsession, hoarding, excessive barking, separation anxiety, and unwanted chewing. Short case studies are also presented. The training methods are SIMPLE but not necessarily EASY to implement because (as with any dog training method) it requires consistency on the part of the human. There are some personal stories from Cesar's life woven throughout the book which some reviewers apparently found unnecessary. I didn't mind. In fact, I think they help illustrate Cesar's overall philosophy of dog training - that a stable, well-balanced human is the best pack leader.I would recommend this book, especially if you have not watched ALL of Cesar's shows.

This is a great read for any dog owner. I didn’t realize how much more exercise my dog neeeded nor did I realize how important it was to set boundaries for her. This is a great basic and introductory book to training and owning a dog. Since reading this book I’ve changed how I approach problems we have been having with our dog and since then she is like a different dog! Her anxiety is less, she doesn’t beg at the table but most importantly my dog and son are relaxed around each other. I recommend also watching Cesar’s shows and learning how to read your dog’s body language.

I bought this book to learn useful information about how to train my puppy. The book did not get me much closer to that goal. The majority of the book focuses on Cesar's training philosophy without providing anything concrete to actually put into practice. I did learn about his beliefs, such as the importance of being the pack leader, and how great his fulfillment formula can be for training dogs and for bettering humans as well. The problem is I didn't learn anything about how to actually do it!! Its frustrating because I do believe that his techniques work, they just aren't provided in this book. I have actually learned more on his website than I did reading this book. I think the majority of pet owners, especially new pet owners are like me and looking for real, practical knowledge. This book is not for them.

I purchased a few of Cesar Millan's other books and noticed they all said the same thing. The issue is for those of us who watch every episode of his we learn nothing new. Now with this book it basically combines everything from his other books in to one. I would recommend this book if you are a new puppy owner and if you have never read his other books before then this would be a great add on.

I purchased this as a gift for my niece who recently got a dog. I read thru it before giving it to her and was surprised that I, a lifetime dog owner, actually learned a thing or two.

I'm a fan of Cesar's from way back, particularly having owned a rotty who had a tendency to be a fear-biter. This book is somewhat general, ith reiterations of the importance of "calm, submissive energy" etc., that is, all the Cesar staples. Still, it's not bad to have them all together for a read, when one is orientating oneself to a new dog - as I was with my new rotty, when I bought the book.

I really liked this Terrain Guide. When you are looking for something fast and easy, this is the guide for you. I wish there had been more terrains, or perhaps a city guide? Sites one might find in a forest, swamp or the mountains perhaps?

I guess I dont run my games like this. I thought it would be useful, but I found most of the info to be useless and felt like filler. Still, there is some stuff of use in it and it is cheap...so you cant complain too much. But again, if you run a certain type of game, lets say a more old school game, then you may get more out of it than I did.

I guess I read into the description. I was expecting some random tables. It's really just what it says, summaries. I guess the summary is decent, but not enough new information you cant get from DM guide.

First off....this read is so modern day and very relative to a great number of families/people today. I love how realistically descriptive the writer is. It's totally opposite of what I initially thought. Although an easy read, it was compelling and convicting both in the same. So much so, that I was left with an unusual appetite of wanting more. At times I felt as though I was right there in the car and room with them. I had several moments where I just could not be pulled away because I was anxious about the next moment. I so want the full novel!!

This is one of those kinds of stories that, due to great professional narration, I want to give it a positive rating. But, I just can't.Bear with me...this is the third or fourth in the Dark Corners collection that I have read and posted a review for. Among them, this is, for me, the dud. Why?The writer spends far too much time building the two characters. The husband is a socially conscious liberal proud black man. His wife is much the opposite. Their young son is more attuned to Mom. Anyway, divulging more would spoil the story, so I shan't do that. After the overlong intro, though, despite a couple of contradictions among the two main characters, the writing picks up and kept me hanging on the every word. Most of the people feel real and, except for the far too nice cop, are believable and true to type, as described by this writer.BLUSH FACTOR: The number of profanities, including f-words, will probably cause blushing if you are reading it to your church prayer group. By all means, if you're not bothered by cussing, you might enjoy this story. As I said, once I got passed the opening few pages, I was not bothered by the language. The 'n-word' is used, but it is the thinking of the main character, so, keep that in mind.SOUL: Yes, this is a story with soul.BOTTOM LINEThree stars out of five. The action sequence and the conflict descriptions almost make this a four star read.Hope my short review helps you decide, one way or the other. I don't mean to be overly critical, as this is not a bad story and it is not bad writing. But...I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. With your help, my improvement will help you and me improve book reviews on Amazon. Together, you and I can build a great customer review process that helps everybody. Will you join me? It is people such as you who have helped me improve over the years. I'm still learning, and I have a great deal yet to learn. With your help, I'll improve every day.One request: Be respectful and courteous in your comments and emails to me. I will do likewise with you.Thank you so much for indicating if this review helped you, or for your comment.

A brief and beautifully told tale of strange modern mysticism, The Tangled Woods is, at once, a glimpse at casual violence and masculine toxicity, a true story about magic, and a thoughtful contemplation on human connection, family, love.As a forewarning: I did not realize this story was part of a larger collection, I caught it on its lonesome on recommendation. My review is not written within the context of the Dark Corners collection entire.I will also say that I've read some reviews citing political bent or didacticism but found little merit to the charge, myself. The story deals with understandable fears from understandable perspectives, and though many of those fears have political attachments, the exploration of these fears through perspective isn't wildly political, nor is the text didactic. Now, the review proper.Perspective is everything. Pause on that.Reginald Wright is a cynical, rotted-out man, and every page, every paragraph of this story serves as partial dissection of his husk. His perspective, and the reader's, infects every moment. And as we are met so quickly, and frequently, with the foibles and casual bitterness of the narrator, we are brought to question him, and, when we see as he sees, ourselves. Time visits cruelty upon everyone, and roughs us into scar tissue and callus. The world's cruelty isn't at all evenly distributed, but everyone is familiar with it. Reginald crackles with the many-asked question, "What have we become in our scarification?"Reginald is a disappointed, unsatisfied, hungry man in the midst of a tragically typical mid-life crisis. There but for the grace of God go I...The backdrop to the plot is the Poconos, and a near-stereotypical lodging thereat. At the Big Bear Lodge there's a spa, and a campus-wide immersive kiddie-LARP called Wizard World, and everyone there is the same as everyone else there and it is terrifying. Raboteau excellently captures the real horror of such environs, the grotesque deformity of the animatronic, the noise of so many other families, the crushing blandness of it all. And yet, and yet...this place is magickal. (WITH A K!)Reginald finds a foil in the character of Sean, a different, more deranged breed of toxic masculinity and scarification. Their differences are stark, yes, of course, but their similarities set up one of the key scenes of the story. They twine together in a bond of poison, brokenness; their interaction becomes totemic, a parable of venomous masculinity, of violence lurking just beneath barely-there civility. It unfolds the only way it could be expected to unfold, really. With unexpected consequence. Their meeting is a moment of division, but also strange synchronicity. Perhaps Jungian synchronicity. Mystic synchronicity.Speaking of mysticism, of course, Wizard World is the main Big Bear Lodge activity. It's a sprawling game of Potter-esque wizardry, except, predictably, significant parts of it are malfunctioning or broken. Reginald is predictably embittered by these further developments, but the magician of the family, young Thurgood, continues relentlessly on his quest. Thurgood wants to reach the end of this ritual so that he might acquire the healing rune and, well...repair some of his father's bitterness and trauma. These kinds of grand quests are often the heroic fantasies of children, but, alas, this one seems unlikely to succeed. So much of the game doesn't work that it looks as if finding even the cheap plastic version of the 'healing rune' may be impossible.Except...Well. You would have to read it, I suppose.Because, again...perspective is everything. And though the story is rooted in Reginald's perspective by prose, Raboteau simultaneously suggests the perspective of every character. And sometimes, what we see is just what we see, but sometimes what we see becomes real. I'd like to write more, but I'd hate to spoil anything. All of this happens in the States, with fears that correspond to many people's fears, and realities that are difficult to confess to. This story could easily have driven into some heavy truths, and driven deeply, but these U.S. realities largely remain background noise, setting. They inform the story but they do not define it. This story may be 'political' in that politics constantly necessarily exerts its will over its citizenship at all times, quite unevenly, and therefore the events and realities of the book reflect that...but otherwise I would not label it so.This is a fascinating read, at times quite funny, at times tragic, and crackling with a special sort of magic. And you can finish it in a day!

I thought this would be a great little read, but I didn't like it at all. None of the characters were fleshed out enough to care about, the story was boring. I kept waiting for something to happen to make it more engaging, but it just ends with a depressing act by one of the minor characters. I wish I'd read something else.

I really enjoyed this short story from Emily Raboteau. It is well worth the read, particularly around Halloween. A cautionary tale, indeed.

This is really gorgeous writing! Topical subject matter makes the story all the more interesting. It’s a delightful quick read that will hold your interest and end all too soon.

Within two pages we are already introduced to a black family that thinks it needs protection to safely drive through "Trump country" Pennsylvania, a bad Trump supporting driver in gas guzzler truck that cuts them off, a child who asks if the white police are going to shoot daddy when he gets pulled over, and a school shooting on the radio news, because "what has this country come to?". If you like msnbc, safe spaces, race baiting, and cliche, then this is the book for you. But not for me, I'm done on page two, and I'd like my 90 seconds back please. Thank you.

Just before D-Day in 1944, General George S. Patton made a famous speech (also used in the movie Patton with George C. Scott) to the US 3rd Army in which he said, "We have the best food, the finest equipment, the best spirit, and the best men in the world. Why, by God, I actually pity those poor sons-of-bitches we are going up against." Source: Patton: A Genius for War Patton: Genius for War, A.In Freedom's Forge: How American Business Produced Victory in World War II by Arthur Herman, just published in May 2012, we learn why and how "the finest equipment" in the world was built in massive quantities for the allied cause. At the start of World War II, the USA was a third rate military power. In 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland Hitler's Luftwaffe had a strength of nearly 8,500 fighters and bombers. The US Army air corps had barely 1/5th that number. Patton's Second Armored brigade had only 325 tanks while the Germans had more than 2,000. There were only 334,000 men in the total US armed forces. The US army ranked 18th largest in the world with about 190,000 men just ahead of Holland and behind Hungary and Romania. Time Magazine said "the US Army looked like a few nice boys with BB guns." There was no Military Industrial Complex, the USA was not a superpower and about 3/4's of the population supported isolationism and the preservation of peace at all cost. From July 1940 to VJ day in August 1945 the United States produced a staggering $183 billion in arms. America's shipyards launched 141 aircraft carriers, eight battleships, 807 cruisers, destroyers and destroyer escorts, 203 submarines and almost 52 million tons of merchant shipping. US factories turned out 88,410 tanks, 257,000 artillery pieces and 640,000 Jeeps. The United States produced 324,750 aircraft averaging 170 per day since 1942. Nearly 10 million American men and women would serve their country in uniform. The United States, by the end of the war, had the best equipped fighting force on the planet. Moreover, through the lend lease program the United States had supplied many of the arms needs of Britain, the Soviet Union and other allied forces. How did this remarkable transformation take place? FDR was wise enough to recognize that the power of American business, more often than not led by those who opposed him politically, needed to be harnessed in order to win the war. Freedom's Forge shows how FDR reached out to Bill Knudsen, a Danish American and the President of General Motors, to spearhead the wartime production effort. Knudsen served as the head of the Office of Production Management and brought an experienced manufacturers' vision to the problem of producing war material.Herman documents many of the American production achievements that led to victory in World War II. In Freedom's Forge we learn about the unsung and nearly forgotten production heroes such as Bill Knudsen, Henry Kaiser and others that put the USA on a path to a rapid build-up of industrial production. It was the free market that enabled America to gear up for war so effectively. Herman writes, "Production, however, remained an entirely voluntary process. The War Production Board could and did order companies not to produce things: new cars, for instance, and refrigerators and other heavy durable goods, It never told anyone what to make. That was left to the imagination of American business. This was how Bill Knudsen had designed things from the start, and it remained the pivot point of the entire wartime system. Everything made for the war effort was made by those who saw some advantage for themselves in doing so, and therefore they brought all their skills and tools and knowledge to bear on the task--both to help the country and to make some money...Nor was it entirely a coincidence that no other wartime economy depended more on free enterprise incentives than America's, and that none produced more of everything in quality and quantity, both in military and civilian goods."American business showed remarkable flexibility during the war. The famous carmaker Henry Ford, who was an ardent isolationist before Pearl Harbor and despised FDR's New Deal, built the massive Willow Run production facility to crank out B-24 aircraft. Henry Kaiser, who had specialized in road construction projects before the war, became a massive ship and aircraft builder. Kaiser led the "Six Companies" that produced thousands of Liberty Ships that ferried men and equipment to the war zones. Kaiser had one Liberty ship built in an astonishing 4 days, fifteen hours and twenty-six minutes. Winston Churchill declared, "The foundation of all our hopes and schemes was the immense shipbuilding program of the United States."Not all US casualties in World War II served in the military; many were from the world of work and business. Morrison Knudsen (another "Six Companies" member) had employees serving alongside US Marines in the defense of Wake Island in December 1941. A Japanese amphibious force was dispatched to capture the island in late 1941. Many of these MK engineers fought, were killed or wounded, and were captured and spent years in Japanese POW camps. Thousands of civilian merchant mariners aboard Liberty ships lost their lives particularly as a result of Nazi U-boats in the North Atlantic. On December 30th, 1942 Boeing's best civilian test pilot, Eddie Allen, was killed with the rest of his crew while test-flying a B-29 which crashed near Boeing field in Seattle. Boeing later sorted out the issues with the B-29 and the "Superfortress" bomber; these planes ignited Japanese cities with incendiary bombs (developed by Kaiser) and delivered the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Arthur Herman's fine book is not without a few flaws. Herman writes that Hap Arnold "was the only senior military or civilian leader to oppose dropping the atomic bomb." Yet in Eisenhower's own book Mandate for Change, he recalls a Potsdam conference encounter with Henry Stimson, the head of the War Department, where he "voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives." (Source: D.D. Eisenhower, Mandate for Change, 312-13).If you enjoyed Freedom's Forge you will also like America Invades America Invades: How We've Invaded or been Militarily Involved with almost Every Country on Earth by Kelly / Laycock and Italy Invades

I liked the Arsenal of Democracy by Baime better. Herman’s criticism of labor, FDR, and the New DealSubtracts from the great story of American ingenuity. Herman’s book is interesting and there is room forBoth books on your shelf. Knudsen is a hero all history people should know so I do recommend this book.In an era where labor needed help from the government and FDR provided help and hope, I wish HermanFocused exclusively on the great accomplishments of labor and manage, ent together.

Freedom's Forge portrays the businessmen and industrialists who organized and managed the production of war materials for the US involvement in WW ll as unsung heros. Without their organizing and production genius, defeating the Axis powers would have been much more difficult if not impossible. The war started with the Axis powers well-armed and with substantials resource production capabilities. However, during the last two years of the war, the US overtook them in a big way and made war equipment faster than all the Axis powers combined. We were also able to supply our Allies with much of what they needed; especially England and Russia. Many history books have characterized these men (such as William Knudsen and Henry Kaiser, among others) as robber barons. They did profit handsomely, but they did earn it and the reader is left with the sense they did what they had to because of a "calling"; they were driven and not just by profit. What made these industrial giants' leadership interesting is that most of them were Republicans who were appointed by Progressive Democrats under the Roosevelt administration; you will have to read the book to see how all this turned out.Freedom's Forge will provide the reader with a different perspective of what was going on behind the scenes of the WW ll effort; it is a good read.Rich

This is about the captains of industry who devised the most incredible production lines for war materiel ever known, as well as superior manufacturing systems. Henry Ford is revealed as a noncooperative magnate when contacted regarding the manufacture of certain parts, sternly isolationist and totally out of touch. It's okay, Packard stepped up and made those parts. The incredible difficulty in cranking out tanks when the plans weren't all that great, nor were the results when the plans were followed, led to substitutions and improvements that ultimately devised the Sherman tank, one of the machines that was crucial in the winning of the war. The plans for the firearms designed by J.M. Browning involved the use of old manufacturing jigs that had been stored for years and were scarcely worth taking out of their crates. Another company stepped forward and took on that project, successfully creating firearms in mass quantities.Manufacturing in Great Britain was severely limited by the availability of raw materials, and by their system of making one machine at a time, customizing it to perfection, and sending it out the door. The American system of mass production, emphasizing accuracy of production parts so that they were interchangeable with ANY of the units instead of just one, was far superior, and ultimately resulted in production numbers that were astounding.I really enjoyed this book, and now see a lot of big industrial projects differently, as those are discussed in the book as well. There were heroes in those days, and not all of them wore uniforms.
