Manga Classics: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain

Review

Part of the Manga Classics series of black-and-white graphic novel adaptations of timeless literature, featuring manga-style art and the utmost respect for the original works, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer brings Mark Twain's novel about a silver-tongued young man in the antebellum South to life with a whole new work. This adaptation deliberately keeps the tone and word choices from the source material intact, since Mark Twain's gift for language and satire were a crucial element of his stories. Thoroughly engaging for readers of all ages, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a "must" for public and school library graphic novel collections. Also highly recommended is the Manga Classics adaptation of Mark Twain's sequel, "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (9781772940176, $17.99).

About the Author

Samuel Longhorn Clemens better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, Twain worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. He is celebrated as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature".

Nice cover and nice paper and good font. That deserves two stars. However, almost all of the reviews are misleading if you think they are talking about this book. Amazon is applying reviews in batch to the story, not to any particular edition. Beware. This edition, with this cover and with "The Discovery of the Great" at the top, is bogus. The closest you come to identifying the publisher is in the back: "Made in the USA San Bernardino, CA 26 February 2018". It will be printed just for you, most likely from text that was originally on standard 8 1/2" by 11". When sent to the printer and printed on 6" x 9" paper stock, most all the lines wrap so you get some short lines and some long - a complete mess! This printer did not even bother to define the right paper size. Also did not bother to print page numbers or anything beyond the Mark Twain text.

Alot of the complaints in the reviews about this book are that "It is too slow", and "It is too difficult to read." Guess what! This is not The Hunger Games or The Twilight Series. This is actual literature from over 100 years ago. Yes it takes work to get through the dialogue. It is not exactly a page turner in that regard. But if you can be patient, and "get into the groove' of the dialect, then you will soon be able to read through the conversation with less effort. It is rewarding! Of course, I am reading this as an adult, and because I chose to do so, and not for a homework assignment. I am glad I took the time to do so, because this to me is what literature is all about. It's rewarding - not just a book you cruise through in two days, and then give it to your 10 year old who also reads it in two days. There is a lot of social commentary, as well as commentary about the inherent decency of man, and what we do to screw up our kids along the way. Critics are correct, this is not a children's book. It just happens to be about a child. Mark Twain was a masterful writer. I hope you take the time to work through this book. Also, the Dover Thrift version does not appear to be censored - as some of the other books are purported to be.

There are three significant translations of this book, and amazon's lacklustre book-sorting system creates nothing but chaos when searching for the correct format / translation of this book. I'm here to help!note: (find the version you are looking for with the ISBN numbers I've provided at the bottom of this review, you can just copy and paste them into the amazon search field and hit GO).Here are excerpts from the three most common translations:Paragraph one, translated by Mercier Lewis -THE YEAR 1866 WAS signalized by a remarkable incident, a mysterious and inexplicable phenomenon, which doubtless no one has yet forgotten. Not to mention rumors which agitated the maritime population, and excited the public mind, even in the interior of continents, seafaring men were particularly excited. Merchants, common sailors, captains of vessels, skippers, both of Europe and America, naval officers of all countries, and the governments of several states on the two continents, were deeply interested in the matter.Paragraph one, translated by Walter James Miller and Frederick Paul Walter (1996) -THE YEAR 1866 was marked by a bizarre development, an unexplained and downright inexplicable phenomenon that surely no one has forgotten. Without getting into those rumors that upset civilians in the seaports and deranged the public mind even far inland, it must be said that professional seamen were especially alarmed. Traders, shipowners, captains of vessels, skippers, and master mariners from Europe and America, naval officers from every country, and at their heels the various national governments on these two continents, were all extremely disturbed by the business.Paragraph one, translated by William Butcher -The year 1866 was marked by a strange event, an unexplained and inexplicable occurrence that doubtless no one has yet forgotten. Without mentioning the rumours which agitated the denizens of the ports and whipped up the public's imagination on every continent, seafaring men felt particularly disturbed. The merchants, shipowners, sea-captains, skippers, and master-mariners of Europe and America, the naval officers of every country, and eventually the various nationals governments on both continents--all became extremely worried about this matter.------------------------------------------------------------------------------WHAT a difference! And who to trust? From wikipedia:"Many of Mercier's errors were corrected in a from-the-ground-up re-examination of the sources and an entirely new translation by Walter James Miller and Frederick Paul Walter."So, the modern translation to seek is either the Walter James Miller / Frederick Paul Walter edition, or the William Butcher edition, depending on your preference for the above excerpts.------------------------------------------------------------------------------And here is how to find them:USA - amazon.comWalter James Miller / Frederick Paul Walterkindle edition ASIN: B004DNWRPQpaper edition ISBN:1440414262William Butcherkindle edition ASIN: (appears to be unavailable at the moment)paper edition ISBN: 0199539278------------------------------------------------------------------------------UK - amazon.co.ukWalter James Miller / Frederick Paul Walterkindle edition ASIN: B00BIFLLV8 or B00BSK24HIpaper edition ISBN: 1438446640William Butcherkindle edition ASIN: (appears to be unavailable at the moment)paper edition ISBN: 0199539278

We bought this book for my child’s 7th grade summer reading. For this, annotation is required including underlining. The printing on this book is so so small that I literally gasped when I opened the book. This book should be 3-4 times as thick but they’ve condensed the font size so much to save pages that it is useless to a student. I have 20/20 vision and would struggle. I want my money back but am not going to bother sending it back because it would cost me as much postage as I paid for the “book.” The text size is what I’m guessing to be 5 pt font. It’s shocking!!!! We are headed to Barnes and Noble to get something we can actually use for school.

I wanted to re-read this due to the discussions of removing it from school libraries and required reading lists related the use of a certain word. I read this in the fifth grade, and at that time, it was simply a great adventure of two boys . Now, over 50+ years later I see it in an entirely different light. It is not just an adventure of two boys... but also a social and political commentary on slavery. Now I truly appreciate the significance and genius of Mark Twain. It is a part of our history that we need to study and learn from. Like the Holocaust...we should never forget.

Suicidal: Why We Kill Ourselves, by Jesse Bering

Review

"What undergirds Bering's inquiry is the belief that locating the psychological blunders that lead to suicide can help, in time, to curb their prevalence." (New Yorker)"He weaves together personal stories, delves into whether nonhuman animals die by suicide, and examines the relation of religion and self-killing. These angles offer a critical perspective on a devastating problem."   (Scientific American)"Suicide is one of the toughest subjects to write about, and psychologist Jesse Bering does it with candor, scientific integrity and genuine empathy in Suicidal. . . .  The book itself is a testament to the human spirit. Researching and writing the book, he says, was a way to combat suicidal ideation and give his own life a renewed sense of purpose. . . . Suicidal is a vital book--informative, engaging, and enlightening despite its dark subject matter." (Shelf Awareness)"Jesse Bering is the best science writer at work today."   (Dan Savage)"By the time you finish reading these sentences someone in the world will have committed suicide. Why do more than a million people a year kill themselves? To answer this question we need a brilliant research scientist, an insightful psychologist, and a sensitive but powerful writer who has seriously contemplated taking their own life. Jesse Bering fits all three criteria and the book you hold in your hands is a deeply moving narrative that cuts to the heart of the ultimate question any of us could ever ask: why should I live? Given what’s at stake in the topic, Suicidal may very well be the most important book you will ever read." (Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic Magazine)"I'm not surprised that a book on suicide would be very personal, but I didn’t expect it to be so damn funny. It's also engaging, thoughtful, and sensitive--although Bering is certainly irreverent, there is a real appreciation of how painful and difficult this topic can be. This is a book for scholars and for a general audience, but it is also entirely suitable for people whose lives have been touched by the suicide of someone they loved." (Paul Bloom, author of Against Empathy)"In Suicidal, Jesse Bering explores one of the most essential questions we all face: Why keep living? He doesn't claim to have found any easy answers, but his exploration is surprising, funny, touching, and deeply personal. Suicidal feels like a gift, and reading it reminded me that encounters with great books are reason enough, for now, to keep going." (Christopher Ryan, author of Sex at Dawn)"I have yet to come away from reading one of [Bering's] essays and not feel considerably better informed than I was just minutes before." (Forbes)

I have a personal reason for reading this book - we lost our son to suicide totally unexpectedly, without warnings, 16 months ago. The loss has devasted us and turned our own existence into a painful struggle. We had no idea that our son was suffering, let alone that he was suicidal. The appearance he presented was totally misleading. He was a young, highly functioning professional with a lot of friends. He was good looking, athletic and talented. He always appeared to be in control. His suicide was a shock to all. How could we all be so wrong?Jesse Bering’s book confirmed so many things that I have come up with during my own 16 months “psychological autopsy” and “trying to get into my son’s head”. There were certain traits that contributed to my son’s death. As Jesse lists some of them: perfectionism-check, sensitivity-check, very high standards for himself and blaming himself - check. Propensity for depression, combined with numerous situational stressors that created a perfect storm -check. Having a gun as Jesse points out, and I agree, was a recipe for disaster.I found chapter 4 on Roy Baumeister’s stages in which the individual moves from one degree of suicidality on to the next immensely valuable, particularly from the perspective that it is here where the deadly cycle can be broken. I actually reread this part and will be rereading many parts of the book.Another well-illustrated point is what Edwin Shneidman calls “psychache”. The case of Vic, a young girl who took her own life is particularly painful to read. Her writings are so beautiful and haunting. As Jesse points out, this is not a suicide prevention book. His hope is that it might help people better understand the problem and maybe recognize some of the signs and deal with them. After reading the book, I feel solidarity with the author, Jesse Bering. His sincerity and sharing of his personal struggles make me feel that we are in the same boat. In his outstanding book, Heavens on Earth, Michael Shermer writes about a staggering level of complexity produced by 85 billion of neurons in a human brain, each with about a thousand synaptic links, for a total of 100 trillion connections. I can’t help but think that somehow those 85 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections also account for the commonalties that we share as human beings. Though each suicide seems to be different, the commonalities are extremely important clues for dealing and hopefully understanding and solving the problem.Did Jesse’s book provide answers to all the questions? No, and Jesse himself acknowledges that. But he certainly went along this long, dark, seemingly endless hall with seemingly endless doors and he unlocked many of them one by one. And I hope that he doesn't stop here.. Luckily, Jesse is not alone on this hall. There are others doing the same.I found Jesse’s book so valuable that I will give a copy to people I know who are interested in understanding the subject better.

Bering is one of my favorite authors and he doesn't disappoint with "Suicidal." As he makes clear from the beginning, this book is his attempt to make sense of suicide and hopefully provide others with a guide to help prevent future suicides. It is his hope that the information he provides can be a roadblock to those having suicidal thoughts as well as helpful to those interested in suicide and suicide prevention.Bering accepts Roy Baumeister's model of the steps leading up to suicide and dedicates a whole chapter to a case study. Although some might say that the book isn't exhaustive enough, I'd agree but I don't believe Bering's aim was an exhaustive, academic tome on suicide. Suicide, Bering makes clear, is a complicated topic but the more we know about it, the better we are at identifying those that are suicidal.Witty, engaging, and informative, "Suicidal" is for all those concerned about suicide.

A deep dive into a taboo topic with a good mix of personal reflections from the author and reviews of relevant prior research. Jesse Bering's approach to the topic is balanced and respectful, always engaging, and sometimes somehow humorous. I'm grateful for the perspective he offers which has genuinely changed the way I look at suicidal ideation.

I have spent the last 17 months reading everything I can find to help me rationalize & somehow try to understand the most painful & complicated event that made my world stop....why did my son Skyler, at the age of 23, take his life and no one saw it coming? This book has helped me see this tragedy through another set of eyes, it helped me to indicate more pieces of this puzzle that will never have all the pieces bundled nicely in a sealed tight bag. Thank you.

A good read on a hard subject. I learned a ton and enjoyed reading it. It handled the difficult subject masterfully with humor and brilliant writing

I have had a very hard time writing a review. Not because of the subject matter, but I couldn't seem to sum up the book very well in a sentence or two. Then I realized it's because the book is one of the very few that does justice to the topic of suicide. It can't be summed up in a soundbite: it's nuanced and intricate and crosses so many social, regional, and cultural lines. "It's complicated", as the relationship status says.Jesse shares his own personal struggles and examines suicide from various compassionate angles. While he certainly has the intellectual chops to dive deep into the psychology behind it, you never get the feeling that some dispassionate observer is relaying his views from arm's length. If you are a member of the human race, read this book. Thanks NetGally for the ARC!

As an academic librarian with some familiarity with current scholarship on suicide (through both my research assistance and my recreational interest), I unreservedly and enthusiastically recommend this superbly written, scientifically informed, and richly insightful book accessible to a wide and varied readership. Whether you are fortunate enough to have only a casual or more distantly philosophical interest in the topic, or have been personally touched or harrowed by suicide in the various ways sensitively and masterfully illuminated by Bering, there is something of lasting value for nearly any possible reader. Bering's unique combination of (1) professional background in cognitive and evolutionary psychology, in which he has made substantial contributions, and in award-winning popular scientific writing, (2) longstanding personal experience contending with suicidal ideation, and (3) exquisitely fluent and dexterous writing skill -- this singular synthesis confers upon SUICIDAL an authority and pathos scarcely matched by any other book in recent years on this darkly enigmatic and perhaps uniquely human phenomenon which, according the the World Health Organization, on average claims a life every 40 seconds.

Steven Spielberg: Crazy for Movies, by Susan Goldman Rubin

From Publishers Weekly

Fans of film will revel in this behind-the-scenes look at Spielberg's childhood, movies and the choices that led to his stellar career. Rubin (Margaret Bourke-White; Frank Lloyd Wright) quotes liberally from articles plus interviews she conducted with Spielberg, his family, mentors, colleagues and actors. A portrait soon emerges of a director who drew upon his childhood fears ("of trees, of clouds, the wind, the dark," even a clown doll) to feed his tremendous imagination and who began filming his first feature-length film, Firelight, at 16. Rubin corroborates Spielberg's own assertion that each of his movie ideas originates from a childhood memory (e.g., "Poltergeist is about all the terrible things I did to my younger sisters," he says). This biography offers glimpses into the making of movies and also reveals little-known aspects of the director's journey, including how he created a 26-minute, 35-mm film called Amblin' solely to show to Universal Studios (when Universal offered him a seven-year contract to direct television shows, he left college). Family photographs and film stills help document Spielberg's progress. Ultimately, the finest special effect from this peek at the man behind Jaws, E.T. and Saving Private Ryan may be its convincing message that anything is possible when one perseveres and follows his or her dream. Ages 9-12. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Gr 6-9-A comprehensive look at the child, the man, and the creative genius. Based on the author's interviews with family and associates, and those previously given by Spielberg himself, the text provides readers with insight into the filmmaker's life and the motivation and imagination behind some of his biggest films. Divided into chapters based on his movies, the book begins with Firelight, the home movie Spielberg made when he was a teenager, and concludes with A.I., released in 2001. Readers be warned: not all of his films are included. The discussion of each film includes background information and how the filmmaker turned life events into hits such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. The author devotes a chapter to discussion of the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation that Spielberg founded. Actual movie stills and numerous behind-the-scenes and family photographs are included.Shauna Yusko, King County Library System, Bellevue, WACopyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

This book is so much fun! He made his first movie when he was a junior in high school, casting friends from school. His mom said "My house was a total studio..." A great story about a phenomenal filmmaker.

Well I liked the book but why no mention of 1941 at all?

This is a pretty good decent sized book about both Spielberg's life growing up and his most successful movies such as Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Jurrasic Park and Saving Private Ryan to name a few. There are some great colour photographs from the movies along with a lot of information. If you like the films he has done or are interested in his life then this would have to be one of the best books out there on that subject.

This is a beautiful little book. I enjoyed reading Ms. Rubin's text just as much as the photos. It reads more like a novel than a bio. including little known facts and personal interviews of his family and friends. She makes a point to illustrate the early influences of Steven's family and school life that later became themes for his movies. It is a very intimate look into Speilburg's personal and professional journey. Ms. Rubin has included many formerly unpublished photos. It all adds up to a wonderful read and certainly a lovely addition to your library, especially if you are a fan of Spielberg's work.

Great book for the 9-14 age group or anyone older looking for a light read. Lots and lots of interesting pictures of Spieberg's childhood, early career and blockbuster movies and behind-the-scene production. Well written and a high quality book.

The Greatest Generation

Amazon.com Review

Veteran reporter and NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw went to France to make a documentary marking the 40th anniversary of D-day in 1984. Although he was thoroughly briefed on the historical background of the invasion, he was totally unprepared for how it would affect him emotionally. Flooded with childhood memories of World War II, Brokaw began asking veterans at the ceremony to revisit their past and talk about what happened, triggering a chain reaction of war-torn confessions and Brokaw's compulsion to capture their experiences in what he terms "the permanence a book would represent." After almost 15 years and hundreds of letters and interviews, Brokaw wrote The Greatest Generation, a representative cross-section of the stories he came across. However, this collection is more than a mere chronicle of a tumultuous time, it's history made personal by a cast of everyday people transformed by extraordinary circumstances: the first women to break the homemaker mold, minorities suffering countless indignities to boldly fight for their country, infantrymen who went on to become some of the most distinguished leaders in the world, small-town kids who became corporate magnates. From the reminiscences of George Bush and Julia Child to the astonishing heroism and moving love stories of everyday people, The Greatest Generation salutes those whose sacrifices changed the course of American history. --Rebekah Warren

YA-Brokaw defines "the greatest generation" as American citizens who came of age during the Great Depression and the Second World War and went on to build modern America. The vehicle used to define the generation further is the stories told by a cross section of men and women throughout the country. The approximately 50 stories are listed in the table of contents under eight topics: Ordinary People; Homefront; Heroes; Women in Uniform and Out; Shame; Love, Marriage and Commitment; Famous People; and the Arena. The individuals are brought to life by photographs within each chapter. YAs will find this book to be a good resource for decade and World War II research. Unlike any era YAs have known, the 1940s are characterized by a people united by a common cause and values.Carol Clark, formerly at Fairfax County Public Schools, VACopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I remember these stories as I grew up during this time . I was 10 yrs old at the end of the war. My mom, dad, uncles ,cousins , friends were all involved. My parents would go to the main highway in town and pick up G.I. hitch hikers and bring them home for some of my mom's home cooking. They would ,sometimes stay over night, and then the folks would take them toward their destination as far as our gas stamp allowance would allow. I did not see this kind of love of country when I came home from Viet Nam . I am sadden at our ," What is in it for me " attitude that prevails . Great stories and only wish we had that kind of spirit and love of the USA today .

It is infrequent that I stop my children and make them listen to me read from my personal reading books. We school our children at home. Home for us is the town of Entebbe in Uganda where my children have grown up as expats thus have had a disconnect from their country of origin. That said this book compelled me to share my own thoughts of admiration and gratitude with them so they too could feel connected to these heroes of our past. Often all they hear is MSN and Facebook chatter so this book starting some thought provoking conversations on the growth and sometimes decline of generations of Americans was wonderful. We discussed topics like racism, patriotism, internment camps, nuclear bombs, community service, honor, and sacrifice. Any book that can engage teens and parents in genuine dialogue about things that really matter is worth five stars.

Mr. Broken has captured the lives of all of the people in his book and brought them to the forefront for the current generation. It was a pleasure and an honor to read stories of courage and valor, both on the battlefield and in their future lives. This should be assigned reading for all American History courses as The Greatest Generation is slowly losing its members. My greatest honor was to be a guardian for the Honor Flight for WWII veterans to the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. The stories I heard during the flight were both humorous and tragic. Senator Robert Dole, one of the person's in the book was present to meet veterans as they arrived by bus to the memorial. This was great book, well written and very interesting.

Being a child of one of a member of the greatest generation this book gave me a better appreciation of all of that generation and what they did. There is nothing we can do to repay them for all the sacrifices that were made to ensure our freedom. It is so true that they never spoke about the war, my Dad never did. It was only after his passing did I discover from his military documents and newspaper clippings what transpired. I knew he had been wounded but nothing of the role he played. This book filled in all the gaps. Thank you Tom Brokaw for telling the story.

This was a fantastic read about a generation that is sadly soon to be gone from this earth, but certainly never forgotten. This book tells the story of many individuals who served their country, on and off, the battlefield. The overall message being a generation that gave everything, and expected nothing in return. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys history, and who admires tireless ambition, civic pride, and for those who simp!y care to learn the very values and attributes that brought about the best moments of the 20th century in The United States of America.

I first read Mr. Brokaw's sequel to this book--THE GREATEST GENERATION SPEAKS--and appreciated it so much that I really wanted toread his first book. So I ordered it from Amazon and am so glad I did. It is a wonderful testimony to the American way of life that did so muchfor our country and our people. We've lost that way of life, unfortunately, so I want to have this book to share with others, who can learn from itand live their lives better because of it.

This is the best and most meaningful book I have ever read. It captures a true sense of the struggles and unification of America during WWII. I am 42 years old and recall many stories as a child told by my grandparents and parents that mirror the struggles outlined in this book. Several in my family served in the military, including WWII, and I appreciate them so much more after reading this book. We take so much for granted today. I feel every generation, especially Millennials and Gen Z, can benefit greatly from reading this book. It will be a must read for my children when they are of an age to better understand and appreciate the information found in the book.

The author did a beautiful job of exploring the effects of WWII and how our fathers and uncles brothers and friends dealt with the effects. I was born during the War,but, had older sisters with friends that left to fights. And, not all returned. But, remember finding ration books, and leg makeup that they used. It was all very mysterious to me and had many questions. Reading the book made every question I asked much clearer.

Rarely do I write reviews, but this book deserves all the stars I can give it. I collect cookbooks, and whenever Phaidon releases a new one, I automatically purchase it. Although the books are always beautifully presented, the quality of the recipes can vary, and some of the books have practically no recipe notes at all (squinting at you, VEGAN).Fortunately for me, this cookbook checks all of my boxes. The presentation is gorgeous, with full-color photographs accompany every two or three recipes. Furthermore, there is a LOT of information about ingredients, preparation methods, meal presentation and cooking/serving equipment. You can really learn a lot just by paging through this volume, which is one of the most important qualities I look for in a cookbook.I would also note that this book is bound in such a way that it stays open on a cookbook stand, which is a huge help. It's a sizable tome, but not so thick that it won't fit in my stand. That may not be important to some, but it's nice to be able to use a cookbook without scraping up the bottoms of the pages as you wrestle the thing into your cookbook holder. So, final verdict: BUY IT. ::)

This book is great. Anyone looking for a gateway into Japanese cuisine should buy this immediately. Im a culinary student, and due to my mentors advice of "self study the cuisine you are interested in" I decided to specialize in Japanese cuisine. First of all this book is absolute beautiful. Stunningly so. Like honestly whoever designed this book needs a raise or a bonus or something. I honestly could go on about how wonderful this book is but I wont at risk of sounding like a paid reviewer. But seriously, just get it. I never write reviews but I would be doing the author of this book and any potential buyers a disservice if i didn't.I almost forgot one of my favorite parts of this book! It has the address of actual chefs in the back. Super cool feature for someone who is actually planning to move to japan and be a chef!Nancy Singleton Hachisu, ありがと. ほんとうにありがと.

I couldn't read this at Barnes and Noble because it was wrapped in plastic. It comes that way. I read reviews. I purchased cheaper than Barnes and knew I could return. I dunno about the translation or transfer of Japanese. I do know that it does discuss the very minimal basics of Japanese cooking such as dashi. It is a history lesson in the first dozen pages but come on, that's awesome. The print is DEFINITELY smaller than normal but I think that's because the book would be twice the size. Sure, the photos aren't labeled but you can figure out an egglant dish vs a salmon dish if you read the page with ingredient list and know what food looks like. Stress the "what food looks like" part. It's not a beginner cook book which I think is the problem most people have (especially the ones needing captions on the photos). I'm not upset I purchased it. It has easy and more skilled recipes but explains things with reference to another page if you don't know how to make the basics. Get it if you are familiar with cooking east Asian cuisine. Don't if you're still reading The Joy of Cooking.

This is one of the best written Japanese cookbooks I've come across. It is written with a foreign reader's unfamiliarity towards the cuisine in mind, so it explains what the dish is about, and ultimately how the author puts her twist on it or how she replaces certain ingredients to build flavour. And the recipes are 100% easy to follow. Useful for both professional chefs and home cooks.

Very good and detailed recipes and information on the various dishes of Japan. I only wish it was broken down by region and that there were photos of every completed dish.Otherwise, it’s a great book for japonophiles

A beautifully presentation of Japanese cooking and recipes! A nice edition to my collection of good quality Japanese cook books.

Absolutely fantastic! I own several Japanese cookbooks and I think that this is one of the best. It’s so extensively thorough, beautifully illustrated, and overall not too difficult in either technique or ingredients.

A comprehensive collection of Japanese recipies, beautifully and enticingly presented.
