This is an encyclopedia that seems like it could only be of interest to architects specializing in traditional house framing in Japan in the middle ages. The illustrations are very poor. There is no narrative thread, no discussion really of anything. It is just an exhaustive list of poorly explicated joints used framing or temple construction. I can't think how this book could be of any use to a western person with a wood shop in his/her garage or basement. Even if you wanted to try to make some of these incredibly baroque joints trying to figure out how to do it from this book would be very difficult. I have several books on Japanese architecture and design and woodworking, and I got the least value from this one. Not interesting at all.

It was recommended and can teach you the complicated joints. Issue is majority of joints I can use building furniture. Excellent illustrations and descriptions. If you want a general,purpose joinery book or it is your first Japanese joints it is a good starting point.

There is a lot presented in this book - more than I'll ever use in my lifetime. For the most part, I love the details about the different joints and their description. There were a few places I was a might confused about procedures. But, they were very few, and about things I probably ever do. I considered giving the book 4 stars, but considering all that is in the book, that seemed unreasonable.

The drawings of each joint introduced are given in a set of various clear and concise drawings. Anyone with some drafting or mechanical drawing experience can read and understand each one. The book starts by educating you in the use and techniques of cutting wood with classic Japanese tools, but you can do the same with good, sharp, and strong Western tools. Some of the joints are somewhat complex, study the drawings well. If you like to get intimate with your wood and woodworking, this book is one of the good ones to have in your library.

Someone previously used "inspirational" to describe the book and I will agree with that.I knew before purchasing that this book contains traditional japanese home construction joints and while interested in furniture and cabinetry...... I fiqured I might see some things I could put to use.....and after a couple of days reading the book I have.Less than 20 bucks......if you are a woodworker...even if you dont make a lot of hand cut joints.....its still an interesting book to read.I havent worked with wood in a couple of decades and am wanting to get back into it on a small scale......and being interested in joinery......hand cut joinery....I think it will be fun to reproduce some of these joints......or joints similar to these in some projects.....

This is a terrific book. I bought this after reading other good reviews and can confirm that the book is very well thought out. Lots of diagrams and descriptions. I would like to make a note that this book mostly pertains to larger scale constructions and less so towards furniture though this will show you some creative ways you could make joints and seems on furniture.

This book is filled with unimaginable ways to join wood.This is not a read for a guy who likes to slap pieces of DF together with some nails. This is more for the artisan who wants to be a master carpenter.It illustrates various a variety of splicing techniques and their funtions. Steer clear of the wakare tsugi butt joint aka the divorce joint. Enough said.Framing techniques are illustrated from ground to roof.This book is a great resource if you are looking for that one joint to master.

The book discusses types of wood, the tools required and their use and care, and more styles of joints than I can count. There are 1-2 b/w photos of little value, and the numerous illustrations are all hand drawn with good detail. This is an essential book for anyone interested in the subject, along with "The Art of Japanese Joinery" by Kiyosi Seike.Caveat Emptor: Japanese joinery is an incredibly difficult and high art, and unless you have significant wood working experience, and even then, it is no small task. Most people undergo long and challenging apprenticeships that are a major commitment before they become competant at the art. Special tools with special techniques are essential, as is special and expensive wood.The author says the following about his training:"In my case, the transmission was directly to me from my teacher, over a 5-year period, working 70-80 hours/week. I might add this was thought minimal, but enough to get the basics down. 15-years is thought necessary to become a temple carpenter, the equivalent of 30-years at 40-hours/week." Lenny Brackett of East Wind Inc told me his apprentices are an expense to him for at least the first 5-years, after which they begin to provide some use.With that in mind, this is one of the best books on the subject and I highly recommend it.

Schmitz and Brett tempt me with the flip side of Bierce's proposition; the covers of this book should be about 300 pages further apart. Its 220+ pages of well written, well organized coverage of how market analysis applies to vital development markets remains - utterly unsatisfying.The book seeks to cover everything an analyst could hope for:* basic real estate market analysis goals and concepts (Chapter 1),* basic approaches to real estate market studies (Chapter 2),* sector specific considerations for various market segments (residential, office, industrial, retail, hotels, and mixed use developments - Chapters 3 through 7), and* a baker's dozen case studies to illustrate the concepts.I started with high, soon to be dashed, expectations.Real Estate Market Analysis - A Case Study Approach is published by The Urban Land Institute (ULI). ULI also published the brilliant but stodgy landmark treatise on real estate development by Miles, Berens, and Weiss (MB&W). Most notably, ULI is recognized as the ideological vessel of James Graaskamp. Graaskamp posited the (then radical, now established) tenet that the public and the body-politic are major stakeholders in development. Either can propel or sink a project. Hence, a case study approach from ULI that devoted only three paragraphs to the importance of public and political awareness in market analysis was monumentally disappointing. Ironically, Schmitz and Brett preface their minimal coverage of the topic with the observation:"Given the often contentious environment associated with the proposed closure and reuse of a military facility, public participation is extremely important."They then present, without comment, a two bullet point chronology of this "extremely important" topic. Worse, the topic was the El Toro Marine Base reuse/mixed use plan. Public debate about El Toro persisted for seven years before a tentative plan was finally adopted. That largely unexecuted and heavily litigated proposal remains controversial eight years later.Lapses of analytical and logical rigor are pervasive.For a book on market analysis, the Schmitz and Brett work contains startlingly little analysis. Not for them digressions about how and under what circumstances one approach may be preferable over another. Schmitz and Brett content themselves with vacuous observations like:An economic model is used to evaluate the relative benefits of each scenario over a twenty year period, or to buildout; the model typically presents five year development phases. It is based on assumptions generated by the market analysis and yields the following outputs by land use: total units or square feet, on site employment, total employment generated, land sale revenue, total output, and total income.Without bothering themselves or their readers with hoary little details like: Which economic model, what assumptions, why are they relevant, how do we know that, and why are we concerned with that particular set of outputs? Unhelpful "directives-without-direction" further undercut Schmitz and Brett. I find the directive that an analyst should analyze some data and reach some conclusions about something singularly purposeless.Schmitz and Brett are equally cavalier with logic. They can reason from the specific to the general based on a single observation couched in a unique example. For balance, they sometimes reverse the algorithm and reason from the general to the specific with equally little basis. They are particularly prone to this annoying form of ir-ratiocination when drawing conclusions from their case studies. None of their conclusions seem false, but it would be nice to know that their results are based on more than a wing, a prayer and the authors' say-so.It's a shame that the authors offered no after-action evaluations or any other effort to validate those conclusions. To know that they employed (an unspecified) model on (unspecified) data using (unspecified) analytical techniques based on (unspecified) assumptions is exciting. It sounds so scientific. It would be nice to know whether it worked. Never mind finding out that it didn't work and why not.That being said, the book does not descend to doorstop status. According to their preface; "Real Estate Market Analysis was conceived as a practical guide for analyzing the market potential of real estate development" and "explains the nuts and bolts of how to collect and organize data and analyze demand and supply." Their aims are laudable, but its best use is as text for guided discussion with a knowledgeable facilitator. The material is there, and for the novice, it outlines a useful conceptual framework and presents excellent information about major data sources, but it is woefully weak on the nuts and bolts. It's an easy if not very satisfying read.

This book is written like a textbook - starting with the most basic concepts - but moves on to discuss the tools and techniques of market analysis in considerable detail. Separate sections deal with residential, office and industrial, retail, hotels and resorts, and mixed-use developments. Case studies are given for each type of property. Technologies and data sources to assist analysis are discussed.The two primary authors are a real estate consultant and an author/director of the Urban Land Institute. Many other professionals are listed as having contributed to the case studies.The book includes an appendix of data sources of use to market analysts, a glossary of real estate terms and a thorough index.

Weinberg and Bealer have produced a detailed, well-written, and engaging work on the natural and cultural history of the three caffeinated beverages - coffee, tea and chocolate - that radically changed European dietary habits and customs beginning in the seventeenth century. Unlike most popular histories of these commodities, Weinberg and Bealer's book documents its sources well and distinguishes between legend and reliably documented fact.This is a hybrid book. Parts 1-3 offer a detailed cultural and economic history of the three drinks. There is some repetition in these sections, and the serious student of the history of any one of these beverages will be flipping back and forth in order to get a unified chronological narrative. To the authors' credit, however, the histories of coffee, tea, and chocolate are so complex and so interrelated that any author would be hard-pressed to do much better.Parts 4 and 5 offer a detailed account of the botanical and chemical characteristics of the three plants, and present a summary of the latest research on the effect of caffeine on the human body. Throughout, the evolution of Europeans' (and later Americans') understanding of the nature of caffeine is treated with flair and nuance.This is one of the best histories of coffee, tea, and chocolate available, and probably the most up-to-date. Readers with a serious interest in these matters would do well to read this book alongside two older classic works, Schivelbusch's Tastes of Paradise (on which the authors rely heavily) and Mintz's Sweetness and Power.

This is great reading! Caffeine is so ubiquitous within society that most of us have never really thought about how or why we use it. In this very comprehensive book, the authors detail the history of coffee, tea, and chocolate. This includes their discovery, cultivation, introduction into various societies around the world, impact on society, opposition efforts and medical implications. The book is written in a very evenhanded tone without a noticeably pro-caffeine or anti-caffeine agenda. It is full of absolutely fascinating historical tidbits. Who knew that coffee replaced beer as the morning beverage in the United States, or that the U.S. Government once brought suit against Coca Cola arguing that the caffeine in the soft drink caused bad behavior in adolescent boys? This book may not motivate you to forgo that morning cup of coffee, but you certainly will stare at it with a bit more insight.

Weinberg and Bealer's The World of Caffeine brings together history, science, culture, and medical studies into one large volume. What promised, according to the cover, to be a book on the science and culture of the world's most popular drug, ended up being a boring treatise on the history of caffeine. It was only towards the last 1/3 of the book, that it really started picking up, and even then, the medical information bogged down.The authors are careful to list all sides in the caffiene debate, from medical studies, to historical perspectives, never endorsing one side or the other. Because of this lack of a firm position on caffeine, the book read with a very dry, emotionless tone. I found the history interesting, but presented as it was here without any correlations and in strict, chronological order, it sounded more like a text book. Such circumstances, such as the rivalry between the British East India Tea Company and the Dutch East India Tea company might have made for more exciting reading, had they been explored further.As someone who has had an on again-off again relationship with caffeine, I expected more than this book delivered. I wanted a thoughtful, compelling look at caffeine, not dry facts. Still, the book is interesting, if you can slog your way through it.

Amazing journey through the world of caffeine. Really almost everything you'd want to know. Some parts are a bit dry, however, so it's not a page-turner.

A well written, scholarly book. I learned a great deal about history, and coffee, its origin, and preparation. May be too much of a good thing for the casual reader.

I came into this book interested in reading about the history and use of coffee and tea. That is definitely included on this book among a heap of other information. In my own opinion the first two chapters are dry and full of so much speculation and hypotheses that it is difficult to follow what Is true and what is unsubstantiated. I've decided upon this book as being just a reference book for me rather than something to actively read. I applaud the extensive and exhaustive research present in this book but I feel it was not presented as accessible as it could have been.
