Has a good history of the Harvey Houses besides the recipes
You'll have fun recreating these recipes resurrected from an era of high class dining on our legendary dining cars of a by-gone era. Fred Harvey set a standard for dining on a scale that has not been recreated since the demise of our wonnderful, cross-country rail passenger system!.
I enjoyed reading the Harvey House Cookbook. I have written a novel about a Harvey girl in Kansas and am in the process of getting it published and am working on another one. It was interesting to read the recipes they used. Although I had read most of the history of the Harvey Houses, it was good to have a review. I love an new information I can get about that era.

This is a fun read with some excellent recipes from an era past. We can enjoy the food that the diner's at Harvey Huses enjoyed.
There are better books on dining car recipes, including "Dining by Rail" and "Dinner in the Diner," and both available through Amazon. And, there are more complete books on Fred Harvey, such as Stephen Fried's wonderful "Appetite for America." The cookbook portion of "The Harvey House Cookbook" is better than the space devoted to Harvey the man. Still, you'll be left hungering for more regardless of what you're looking for.

My grandmother was a Harvey Girl and I bought this cookbook for my mom. It means a lot to her. I love the vintage recipes. Overall, I think this is a great gift item, particularly for anyone who has a connection to the history of the Harvey House. I will probably get a couple more copies for my aunts around Christmas time.
