I bought this on accident with a one click buy and there was a reason while scrolling for other books, it’s a life changing read. If you are in a leadership role or have a teenager ready to take on the world this book should be a requirement. I read books from all types of leadership and can honestly say there is a reason with my current teams situation this landed in my lap.Read this for God’s sake.

Thus book has helped me see leadership in whole new way. I never wanted to be a leader to be the boss or to organize a crew of people. Im more of the get in and get the work done kind of guy . Ive always felt that to many people think of themselves as leaders and wanting to be the in charge without doing the real work. I now see i can lead without being in charge.

I was intrigued by the book because of Urban Meyer. I am a father ,husband, and a high school coach. I have read Urban Meyer's first book called Urbans way and really thought he was crazy! Now I know he is amazing at his job but I also knew that I was not willing to sacrifice my family like his first book entailed. But this year something is totally different about Urban Meyer and I think it stems from this book. He looks at peace and his team looked like a family! I understand why, this book is powerful! It is something I want to lead my future teams by! Congratulations to Urban Meyer ! Your change in coaching style is truly inspiring!!!

Here Todd Gongwer takes a simple message wrapped around an interesting story where I found myself in the story at times. How the characters reacted or philosophies they adopted mimicked leadership styles I have used and served under. I can see why this book wins high praise from coaches and leaders in team sports, but it's just as applicable to a single parent, student or office worker. Why? Because we all have a purpose, and finding it is the right first step to moving forward. That's what God wants for all of us.

I heard about this book reading an article in the Canton Repository about the impact this book had on Urban Meyer. Urban Meyer is the head coach at Ohio State and while he had achieved the pinnacle of success as coach at Florida he found he needed to let it go for his health and his family. While reading the book in his year off as an ESPN analyst he rediscovered the real reason for coaching and you can see with the Buckeyes he is now coaching from the heart. I think this book is a tremendous resource that distills the core of leadership which is about which is helping people find their purpose and take action to make a difference in the world. By focusing on the journey instead of the destination you can overcome adversity and make the most of each day.

I have been very blessed to have a great mentor for the past 15 years. I value this man's advice more than the advice of anyone else. Unfortunately we do not get the opportunity to talk like we used to. A few weeks ago I was discussing some challenges I was having with my job and he recommended this book to me.It really was just what I needed at that time. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of English translation. I was very annoyed with the Russian original: misspelled, typos are quite common. If somebody is learning Russian and tries to find a word in a dictionary, with the kind of spelling I found in this Russian text the chances are the word will never be found. Russian text is poorly formatted.The idea of the book is fantastic, the selection of stories is good, quality of the articles about the writers is excellent.The Russian text has to be fixed.

I have had problems with the Kindle editions of other books with non-standard page layout, so I I ordered this in the expectation that I would be somehow disappointed in the experience. I just wanted to see how close an e-edition could come to the hardcopy ideal of facing-page layout. I think there is probably a solution to the bilingual facing-page tradition in kindle editions, but no one in the kindle display coding factory has figured it out yet. The best thing I can say is that if your primary goal is learning the language, flipping a couple of pages forward to check the English translation before jumping back to the Russian is annoying in the extreme, but not absolutely fatal to the learning experience.On a larger tablet screen, maybe the books could be displayed in top and bottom panels; I don't think side by side columns would work, but there might be hope for a tablet held in landscape mode. (I haven't looked into the full-screen on-line reader app because I don't read books that way.) On a small Kindle screen, even the new larger Oasis, there just isn't enough display space to do what needs to be done.

A great compilation of all the major well-known middle-through-high-school level Russian stories. I would not recommend it for someone trying to learn (modern) Russian though. The language used in these stories is way too complicated for a novice or even an advanced level Russian speaker. Certain words are obsolete and extremely hard to understand since they're completely eradicated from everyday use. And simply relying on the accompanying translation is not really effective. I found quite a few inaccuracies there; editors didn't really do a thorough job editing...I guess, the verdict is as follows: if you're looking to learn Russian, move on and choose something more appropriate; this book will only mess up your existing knowledge.As a native speaker, I just read it for fun and joy of correcting bungled translation....

My first experience with a dual-language book was an English-German dual language "Faust" many years ago. At that point I realised the effectiveness of this methodology.Many years after, having reached the intermediate level of Russian, I decided to get a dual language book as I did in German and I found this one. My experience shows that half of the language books in the market are just useless or of little use. So I was not sure about getting it, until I noticed that it is a Dover book and I have very good experiences with Dover books (for example Brian Kemple-Essentials of Russian Grammar). So I got it.What I like most about this book are as follows:* You can see the exact translation of every Russian word and phrase so no need to use a dictionary. This is a real comfort if you don't like to keep on searching over a dictionary for unknown words .* You read the masters. This is very motivating. If you learn Russian and if you can read Pushkin in its original, this is a real reward.* Intros are quite good. You can learn new facts about the great Russian authors, who set the foundations of one of the world's most fascinating literature.So I recommend this book to anyone who wants to master in Russian language. However, a little remark, this text is not very elementary. I would suggest that you first get the basics and then work on this book.

Excellent learning tool.1) Accents are in the book. This helps pronounce the words. Other series do not have this.2) The translation nicely follows sentence by sentence, it does not abstract. This allows for checking your attempts much easier than a loose translation.Not much else to say, really. The stories are surely great but that is hardly the point of the book.

This is a reprint of a book from a series of bilingual readers that that first came out under Bantam Publishers in the 1960's. It was out of print, then Dover did what it does best: It bought the rights to "Russian Stories" and made it available to a whole new generation of intermediate-to-advanced language learners. In line with the other books in the series, it presents the original text on the left side with a good translation into English on the right page. (One of its sister-books, "First German Reader," is how I initially made the jump from being a beginner to becoming eventually fluent in that language.) "Russian Stories" brings you selections from masters of Russian prose, such as Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Chekhov, as well as more recent authors. It even gives the reader advice on which order in which to read the stories, starting from the easiest and progressing to more difficult texts. If you want to read real Russian literature--not simplified versions or textbook anecdotes--this is the place to begin.

I was happy to come across this as it's one of the only digital books to have stress marks in Russian. However, there are A LOT of typos and misplaced stresses. Also, students of Russian language should be forewarned that many of the Russian words and expressions are dated and 'literary' - not used in contemporary colloquial language. This is ideal for passionate readers of Russian literature, but less so for those who seek mastery of conversational Russian.

It's tough to find these. Most are of questionable quality. I like this particular book because the translated stories are from Russian authors my Ukrainian / Russian students will be familiar with. It helps give a sense of English when viewed side-by-side, and familiar works for the student, help.

I'm a bit confused by this book because it seems to leave out parts of Scotland. Where's Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire? The West Coast? The Lowlands? The Outer Hebrides? There seems to be a lot of good information overall, but as we have tentative plans to visit Aberdeen, this is a problem. Nothing about Findhorn, either. Well, it's a start. But just know that it's not comprehensive.UPDATE: We've been finalizing plans for our trip and this book seems even less useful than I'd thought. He mentions two ghost tour operators in Edinburgh; there are several. Speyside Whisky Trail? Steves mentions Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. And that's it, though this area has half of the distilleries in Scotland. I think "Rick Steves Scotland" literally means where Rick Steves went when he was in Scotland. Try Lonely Planet for more comprehensive info. Oh, and Balmoral Castle, which Steves suggests visiting is closed right now.

Loving this book. I'm reading it straight through, though also skipping to more indepth discussions as appropriate. We are headed to Scotland in 2019, and I cannot imagine a better way to prepare for the trip. Rick's writing is highly readable, packed with information and often humorous. It's easy to tell that he has visited these sites personally, more than once, and has so many good tips and suggestions to share. I feel as if I'm on one of his tours already. I think what I love most about this book is that it is so down to earth. Rick is enthusiastic as all get out when he thinks it's appropriate, but he's never gushy. He just tells it like it is. He also allows for the fact that travelers are not all alike. Some are foodies, some can't live without air conditioning, some go for the adventure, others for the education. Throughout the book, he demonstrates great respect for these and other differences, and offers something for everyone. My only disappointment is that there are not color pictures, but I understand the challenge with the thinner paper the book is printed on. This thin paper makes page turning easy, though, and also keeps the weight of the book from being overbearing--and that's a good thing! I definitely recommend this book for a thorough, insightful look at Scotland--and reading it makes me wish I could pack up today and take off!

We just got back from a week in Scotland, three days in Edinburgh and the rest in the Highlands (Glencoe). Rick's book was invaluable. Our travelling style fits Rick's: we like to walk around cities, we like to be independent, and we are frugal. With a Rick Steves book, you don't need tours, and you don't really need guides. In Edinburgh, we found our lodging through AirBnB, but Rick's listings for Glencoe B&Bs were helpful. Rick's sections on the history of Scotland were good to read. His advice throughout is extremely practical.We followed Rick's advice and just tore out the sections of the book that covered where we are going. Now that we are home, we put the book back together, and will keep it for what will hopefully be another trip to Scotland.

I got my guide just a couple of days before my month-long trip so it was too late to return it when I found that the first 46 pages were missing on how to get prepared for my trip! The book starts at page 47 and then repeats the section for some reason with no pages 1-46!The parts of the guide I used were good. He focuses a lot on the city info and not as much on the Highlands and places north I visited but the entire book (that I had) included Rick's humor and slant on things so was still fun to read in parts.

Thanks to Rick's thoroughly researched travel experiences this book logically will enhance our trip to Scotland this May. He has walking tours, driving tours, even a free app to use while abroad. I eagerly waited for this latest 2018 edition, and it is not disappointing. He brings history in nooks and crannies into modern enjoyment while site seeing. He has itineraries for not only the main land, but the islands too! He gave us an exemplary trip to Ireland this past September, using his Ireland book. Now to Scotland!!

Very helpful, I purchased a few books while waiting for this one to become available, Rick’s was the most current and practical of all of them!Highly recommend. We loved Iceland, we travel with 3 generations, 3 grands, 2 parents and 2 girls (4&8), his recommendations for hikes, sites, food and lodging were spot on.Be sure and read his description of driving and roundabouts befor setting off in your rental car

I see what people are talking about with the page numbering BUT in comparing the Kindle edition to the current print edition they have the same information. The page that is shown as p.44 in my Kindle edition is not numbered in the print edition and comes right before p.1 altho there are maps in the book (and e-edition) before that. What shows as pages 261/266/273 in my Kindle is actually all contained on p.14 in the print book. I have not gone page by page after that but randomly flipped thru and don't see any information that is missing. YMMV.I do get the print edition for planning purposes and download the Kindle version to the Kindle app on my iPad for actual travel. This is the standard RS guidebook. Good information, well presented, easy to flip thru as needed before and during travel.

I don't travel without having read Steve's books. He reveals areas in foreign countries one would not find, reveals good places to eat and stay. He gives the reader and future traveller insight into a foreign currency and world which are extremely helpful and my favorite part is the history he opens up to a new place.

Very disappointed to find this unauthentic. Not the original translation at all, but another bird altogether. Compare, The first sentences starting just below "The ancient Chief..." in this book says ..."blew his shell, sounding like the lions roar;of which make the reader think the conch shell sound is as though a lion's roar, (which is not accurate, as its the voice of the Ancient chief which is like the roar) the authentic Wilkins work says "Shouting with a voice like a roaring lion, blew his shell * to raise the spirits..." Totally transposed is this work, yet another translation by someone?? It might be fine, even more true to the original Sanskrit,, but its just not the Wilkins translation.

I read something by IB years ago that was a straight-forward description of some ruins he visited. He mostly stated facts and avoided fantastical descriptions. So I read this book recently and enjoyed most of it. He seems to mainly write when he is travelling, but doesn't write much while he is staying somewhere (stayed in Delhi for years but not much mentioned). His descriptions of sites that still exist today are what I found to be the most interesting. I would look up pictures of these sites on google after reading IB's description. The book also has a map of IB's travels and lots of useful footnotes.

I read this book in college a million years ago - it's such an amazing journey and I hope it inspires readers as much as it did me to explore the world,learn another language or two and love different cultures.

I have a particular affection for old travel books. I love Marco Polo and Richard Hakluyt, so I thought I’d try Ibn Battutah’s travel commentaries. His time on earth overlapped Marco Polo’s, so they are both exponents of the same Zeitgeist. But whereas Marco Polo was a Venetian Christian, Ibn Battutah was born in the Magrib (modern Morocco) and was a devout Muslim. These facts inform everything he writes. So, both Polo and Ibn Battutah visited China, but their perceptions are vastly different. Whereas Marco Polo was rather tight-lipped about sex, Ibn Battutah seems to have copulated his way across the then-known world with hundreds of slave girls, concubines, and temporary “wives.” He also left more than a few offspring in his wake. His trip lasted 29 years and was three times the length of Marco Polo’s. He writes about not only what he actually experienced, but also includes gossip, rumors, and legends about the things and the people he encountered. Some of it is rather horrifying. I quote this passage from his chapter “In the Country of the Blacks”:“A group of these Blacks who eat the sons of Adam came to the Sultan Mansa Sulaiman with their amir. It is their custom to put into their ears big pendants, the opening of each pendant being half a span across. They wrap themselves in silk, and in their country is a gold mine. The sultan treated them with honor and gave them in hospitality a slave woman, whom they killed and ate. They smeared their faces and hands with her blood and came to the sultan to thank him. I was told that this is their custom whenever they come on an embassy to him. It was reported of them that they used to say that the best parts of the flesh of human females were the palm of the hand and the breast.”Yikes!Basically, Ibn Battutah’s sensibilities and mine are 180 degrees apart. I cite this passage as an example: “We came first to the country of the Bardamah, who are a Berber tribe. Their women are the most perfectly beautiful of women and have the most elegant figures; they are pure white and very fat. I have never seen any who are as fat as they. They feed on cows’ milk and pounded millet, which they drink mixed with water, uncooked, night and morning. Anyone who wants to marry among them settles with them as near to their country as possible and does not go with them further than Gawgaw and Iwalatan.”I did not enjoy the book as much as Marco Polo’s, but I did find it compelling reading which provided a lot of food for thought. Four stars.
