This book has been SO WONDERFUL!!!!!!! I have the second edition from a year ago and it has tons of markings in it. So far, I haven't compared the two editions to see how different they are.I'm so grateful for the tools and mindset that this book gave me. I felt punished every day for over a year. "Why did I have to get this child? I don't want this one. Take him back, please!" I also had terrible postpartum depression at the time, which made everything worse than it already was, plus my son had one of the five worst cases of colic I've ever heard of, and I've heard a LOT of stories of people trying to sympathize but being unable to even imagine the hell we went through in our son's first year.(By the way, we feel like our son's nature contributed to the colic and other first-year problems, which is part of why the book has been able to help. He was persistent and knew exactly what he wanted, but he couldn't express it. His body is irregular but needed some degree of regularity imposed so he would sleep at all. He is very sensitive to how much sleep he gets. He is energetic and intense and could scream for three hours straight without falling asleep. He didn't know how to cope with big emotions in a little body, so he screamed more. But now he is two years old and really a joy.)Now, we have a wonderful, curious, passionate, loving, interesting, smart, adorable little two-year-old.The most helpful things were these:1) The book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child saved our lives first. It got our son sleeping AT ALL and then sleeping on a predictable schedule, which we all desperately needed. After he was rested, we could finally start working on other things.2) Sign language. We started signing before he was even 8 months old, and it helped immensely. Our son is very spirited and knows EXACTLY what he wants. It was absolutely crucial that we were able to communicate with him to figure out what he wanted.3) This book. A) As I was pulling out of my postpartum depression, it was crucial that I reframe my thinking about my son. I loved the early chapter on using positive labels for our kids - determined instead of inflexible, curious rather than dragging his feet, spirited instead of hellish (yes, I did say that one), energetic instead of drives me crazy, and so forth. B) The chapter on tantrums has helped immensely. He just turned two, which is when many people see tantrums. Not with a spirited child! Anyone with a spirited child knows that the "tantrums" -- the incessant screaming for three hours, the strength of a four year old when your infant hits you in anger -- start at birth. For months, several times a day, I have been using the author's suggestions for tantrums. Not only are her specific strategies helpful (hold him, talk him through it, name the emotions for him, tell him he doesn't have to deal with the emotions on his own) but also the mindset she describes. I don't know how many times I've told myself lines from the book:--"He will be a WONDERFUL adult. This trait is difficult to parent, but it will make a wonderful adult and friend later."--"This isn't a personal attack. He is overwhelmed with his intense emotions and needs me to teach him how to cope. He's not trying to punish me."--"My child is in a spillover tantrum. I don't need to go there, too."--"Stop and think, listen, talk to him. What part of his nature has just been threatened?" C) Feeling less alone was wonderful. I hate it when the old ladies nod their heads and are like, "Yes, kids are difficult," and smile. My grandmas said that until they were around my son for more than two hours straight. Then they said, "Oh my goodness, does he EVER stop moving? No wonder you have him in daycare! You would physically break down and have no energy left if you tried to follow him everywhere." I love reading this book and being like, "No, my kid isn't a freak. He's just more spirited and energetic than most people can imagine, so when they say those trite, idiotic phrases, I can just let it go. They are talking about a different kind of child. My child is like five of their children. I can let it go."All in all, I am SO GRATEFUL that the author wrote this book. It has really saved us.And now, as he is turning two years old, he is better than ever. I promise, it's possible! I LOVE my passionate, intense, loving, curious little guy! He reminds me of myself and his dad (we were both spirited children). Our beginning was absolute hell, but with good tools, including this book, he has gotten better and better. On good days, I can't imagine a more perfect, wonderful child. Mary is right - we ARE the lucky ones! I can't imagine having a dull, uninterested, passive child.Of course, on bad days, I want to drive to my parents' house and leave him there for a week. But we have tools now to work through it, and we're doing alright. Life is so much better now.(p.s. do not feel guilty if you need to put your energetic, social child into daycare. I remind myself, "I take care of myself and do what I need while he's at daycare so that when he gets home, I can be the mom I want to be. Because he is in daycare and I am able to do my self-care, our interactions are positive mostly. If I were watching him at home all day, we would never have a single positive interaction in a day. Daycare supports his curious, energetic, social, sensitive nature.)

I have 2 beautiful, spirited Irish twin boys (ages 5 & 6) that are at constant odds and competition with each other. When one is high the other is low and vis versa. Not only that but they both carry extrovert personalities where I am an introvert. My communication as a single mom was severely broken and I was loosing confidence that I could handle them. Not only that but with 50/50 custody it was difficult to establish routine bc no sooner would it be established then they would return to their dad.Despair sent me to my counselor who recommended this and another book to me for some light reading. Light bulb. I discovered there are more of you out there with beautiful, vibrant, spirited children. The very first chapter helped me develope a different mindset towards their spirit. I had no idea how my own theought contributed so significantly to my tone and response to my boys. First week was tough——they still had meltdowns. Week 2 fewer meltdowns——-week 3 even fewer. After reading further I began using my own humor to lighten up the room when the “yellow” threat zone was beginning. I stopped a meltdown one night at the dinner table by being absolutely silly—-immediately breaking tension and filling the room with laughter. Please read this book. You are not alone. If you are even considering reading something to be a better parent that displays leaps and bounds of at you want for your children. Do it. Read it. So worth it and I’m only on chapter 8.

This book helped me through raising a very spirited child and I often buy a copy to give to people that find themselves in a similar situation as I was. What this book allowed me to do is relax and follow my heart. I was able to put aside what other people thought and just focus on a happy relationship with my child. The biggest help was that it allowed me to assess a situation (such as going into a restaurant meant for kids that could sit still) and say to myself, this is not a situation my child will succeed in and then just say no to the invitation without any guilt. If you find that your life is out of control with your little handful, this book will help you see it from their perspective and adjust your day to day activities to help everyone be successful.

If you have noticed that your child is a little different than others, or your parenting aligns with your peers but your results are different, this book can change a lot for you! I felt like I was struggling nearly every day not only with understanding my child, but with discipline and management. I felt like the tools I came with as a parent were deficient... this book helped me make the shift to the type of parenting a Spirited Child needs. I especially love the positive language the book offers becauae that’s so important with teachers ans caregivers— attitudes are truly contagious! This book is the bible of parenting a Spirited Child, and it was the first step for me in my own journey to become the type of parent I envisioned. If you have been frustrated and failing to find answers, this book is probably for you. This helped me to an even better relationship with my child, better parenting, and relief, overall. Click purchase!

I read this book about a year ago when my daughter was around 1.5 yo and just reread it at 2.5 yo. Some of the techniques and expectation setting (both for you and the child) described in the book have been monumental in us having smooth pleasant days. For example, I didn't even notice until I reread the book, that I'm constantly giving her 5-10, then 2, then 1 minute warnings before we have to go do something new because simply telling her "it's time for lunch" would never work. It was also tremendously helpful to me to read about the fact that many of her "quirks" are pretty normal... for a spirited child :). Great book, completely worth the time and money investment.

After reading just a few pages, it soon becomes obvious why it won awards. However, reading levels and vocabulary have fallen since 1961 when it was published so that most middle school students today will not understand and appreciate the story very well. It's the perfect book to read in English class at the same time students are studying the Roman Empire in History class. There is much useful vocabulary to prepare students for college, as well as many literary devices to discuss, and character development as well. It's a good choice for high school for Christian schools, home schools and students in secular schools writing about books of their choice. Books like this allow a teacher or parent to coordinate history and literature in a unit study.

Elizabeth George Spear is a phenomenal author and this story is wonderful. We read this book aloud to our four kids ages 12 to 5 And the older two children were completely and enraptured with the characters and story line. If you like this book I encourage you to read other books by this timeless author.

Summary:This is the story of Daniel, a young Jewish runaway who's taken up with a band of Zealots and bandits in hopes of driving the hated Romans out of his homeland. When the death of his grandmother forces him to go back home and care for his unhinged sister, he slowly begins to realize how little his carefully honed hatred has done for him, and how little use it is in achieving his ends. As his animosity brings disaster to his friends and destruction to his home, he turns in desperation to the prophet Jesus of Nazareth. My thoughts:Speare's book is well-written, accessible, and full of vitality. The theme of the book - the powerlessness of hatred - is as beautifully depicted here as anywhere, and is portrayed on an excellent level for younger readers (older ones will find that this book dovetails on a thematic level with C.S. Lewis's novel Till We Have Faces). Although this is certainly a Christian work, Jesus is not the main character, and the Christian themes arise organically from the characters themselves. Less satisfying are the statements and actions of Jesus himself. While Speare doesn't quite portray Jesus as an ordinary man, she apparently goes out of her way to avoid phrases like "Son of God" and it's a little unclear whether his miracles are actually miraculous or just the power of personality and suggestion. While this is disappointing and potentially troublesome to an adult reader, it's very unlikely that a reader at the younger end of the spectrum would even notice the inconsistencies. Those passages could even serve as excellent discussion starters.

One of the better fictionalized New Testament stories I've read. In a genre where sometimes the bar isn't set too high, in this book, the characters were well-drawn and interesting. The 1st century setting felt real. The author achieves a real transformation for the main character, Daniel, and it is well-dramatized and affecting. Apparently, this is what would be deemed YA (young adult) category, but I'm an adult and I enjoyed it.

Upon his grandmother’s death, teenaged Daniel returns to the town where he grew up to take care of his demon-possessed sister and take over the blacksmith shop of a friend, Simon, who has become one of Jesus’s disciples. Hoping Jesus is the one to deliver them from the tyranny of the Romans, Daniel and his friends form a group with the bronze bow (from 2 Samuel) as their symbol. The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare is a wonderful story of what anger and hate can do to us. The setting of first century Galilee and the peripheral character of Jesus Christ works well. I recommend this book to anyone about middle school age and up.

My daughter's Sunday School teacher gave this book to her class as a Christmas present last year, and I recently read it. It was so good that I purchased it for a friend who also enjoys historical Christian fiction. It's very well written, and I learned a lot about the culture of Jesus' day. I think it will give anyone a greater appreciation of the ministry of Jesus, the struggles that the Jewish community experienced under the control of the Romans, and a visualization of the region of Galilee where Jesus spent most of his life an ministry.

Read this myself in middle school and as an adult I still remember how much this impacted me in my youth. Through the point of view of a young boy during the time of Jesus, it was interesting to see how he was influenced even though his life was totally separate and he was going through hard times on top of finding his place in the world. Lots of great core value stuff in here. Got this for my nephew for Christmas but haven't heard yet how he liked it.

The bronze bow is one of those books you hope will go on forever. The message and plot were beautifully constructed with amazing characters easy to get invested in. The setting in Israel during the life of Jesus is great too as the struggle between zealots and legions rage on leaving many suspenseful moments. I recommend the book to anyone around the age of 12-16

#142,508 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I collect these There Was An Old Woman Who...books for my granddaughter and I to read together. There are so many ou there and always excited to get a new one. This one however was a bit disappointing. It's not a story at all..it's just a book with a bunch of stickers and pages with scenes on them to put the stickers. I'm still glad we have it in our collection but was bummed there was no story to read!

I was very disappointed with this book since it was not at all what I expected. What I expected was that the child could use the stickers to change the story (i.e., the rhyme) to whatever they thought best. But there is no story or rhyme in the book (although I suppose everyone already knows the "There Was an Old Lady" rhyme) and the stickers have little to do with the story. I guess that's my bad. Nevertheless, I gave it 3 stars because the stickers are cute and my 5 year old grandson just loves to put stickers on everything and 100 stickers will keep him busy for a few minutes at least.

stickers are not peel and paste, so can only use once

Great addition to my classroom library.

This book is very readable. Elementary children boys and girls love it and it's the only book of the series that we have that an insert. It has stickers so cool!

My students absolutely love Lucille Colandro's series of books. They can't wait to see what the Old Lady spits out at the end. Highly recommend getting all of them.

I love it!

Wow! It is for my granddaughter's B-Day. She will love it!!

I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said by the other glowing reviews, but they are indeed well-deserved. The depth and breadth of topics covered is impressive, if not a bit daunting at first. I've only read through it to get an idea of the content covered, and now I find myself following along and learning a ton. PyMEL is without a doubt the way that Python should have been implemented into Maya to begin with. Python is indeed my favorite (and only) language that I "program" with (I'm originally an animator, trying to transition to becoming a tech-artist). You will NOT find a better book on programming specifically inside of Maya with Python (Maya Programming for Games and Film is good, but is more geared towards beginners). Even if you're not a Maya user, a LARGE portion of the concepts in the book can theoretically be software-agnostic. I'm finding it very difficult to be nit-picky about this book.I eagerly await a second edition, where Mr. Galanakis goes into even deeper topics. If you're trying to level up in your technical skills, accept no substitute.

I'm fairly early into my journey with this book and I can already say it is worth every penny. There's a lot here still way above my head, but the information is presented in a very clear and logical format, and more importantly, the book is transformative. It's a deep dive, but Rob keeps the waters clear. Some knowledge of Maya and Python is expected, so there isn't a lot of hand-holding, but that's not really a problem. It's a better use of the book to get right down to business - and you can easily find supplementary introductions to both Maya and Python online or here on Amazon.Overall, this book is highly recommended. I like the Rob's writing style and his knowledge and experience are invaluable. Required reading for anyone even thinking about learning PyMEL.

The content in this book is fantastic and it is a great resource for working with Python and Maya. However, the e-book lacks a table of contents that works with the Kindle app. In Kindle the table of contents contains two items: 'Cover' and 'Practical Maya Programming with Python' and they both link to the cover. The book has a very detailed table of contents starting on page 3 and contains links to the various topics but I feel it needs to be integrated into Kindle's table of contents.I hate to give such a great book a bad review but I am tired of downloading e-books that have not been properly formatted.

Great book, not only about pymel & api but also about python

good book

An extremely well thought out and informative book, a must have for any tech artist or anyone who wants to improve their Maya workflow. This is definitely one of the best resources I've come across for scripting in any 3d package

Good book with some good ideas

.. of course, as practical programming, the acid test lies in your IDE and the code.In the author's own words:"This book is not a reference. It is not a cookbook, and it is not a comprehensive guide to Maya's Python API. It is a book that will teach you how to write better Python code for use inside of Maya."In other words, if you are looking for a way into the Maya programming world, you find it in this book by building a library from the ground up. This novice Python programmer finds the first few chapters full of both dense material and good coding practice. I'm eager to dig in and see what else lies in store!

Review

"Difficult as it may be to interpret ancient Tibetan Buddhist imagery for contemporary meditators, it is perhaps even more challenging to make historical Buddhist texts accessible. In a new translation of The Lotus Sutra, Gene Reeves aims to do just this. Reeves uses everyday language wherever possible, translating into English many words that previous works have left in Sanskrit. This approach is particularly appropriate for the Lotus Sutra, which emphasizes that enlightenment is attainable for everyone." (Tricycle)"This translation is immediately the new standard, expressing the Lotus Sutra with accuracy, clarity, and fresh readability. The text's genius and subtle spiritual teachings are skillfully captured for a wide audience." (Taigen Dan Leighton, Loyola University, author of Visions of Awakening Space and Time: Dogen and the Lotus Sutra)"A highly readable new translation of the great Lotus Sutra, Gene Reeves skillfully renders the complexity of the text from a scholarly standpoint while delivering its flavor for practitioners. An invaluable resource for students in the classroom as well as in the meditation hall." (Mark Unno, University of Oregon, author of Shingon Refractions)"For readers who are not familiar with the Lotus Sutra, this is an excellent opportunity to acquaint oneself with a bedrock Mahayana text. Dr. Reeves brings a welcome perspective of both scholarship and sympathy to the text, which is extremely multifaceted and requires flexibility to fully represent its fascinating-and at times somewhat frustrating-elements. This new version is also particularly important because it includes the rarely translated Sutra of Innumerable Meanings and the Sutra of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, which are traditionally considered to be the preface and appendix of the main text and hold an important place in the liturgy and study of the Lotus Sutra. And Dr. Reeves has made a strong effort to make the text truly accessible to anyone, including non-Buddhists and non-specialists." (Tricycle Editors' Blog)

This is a fine translation. Readable, clear, poetic. So why two stars? It's something that's mentioned in almost every review - but I think the problem is more serious than has often been discussed. That's the translator's need to change the names of non-human beings in the text to figures from Greek mythology.Yes. As many others have noticed, it's jarring. But it's more than that. One of the realities of the Buddhist worldview is that there are innumerable other types of intelligent beings, some beneficent, and some maleficent. These beings - the rakshas, yakshasas, kimnanras, and many others are, to a Buddhist, absolutely real. They are as real as humans or animals. But Mr. Reeves "translation" of these creatures into satyrs, nymphs, centaurs does far more harm than simply sounding infelicitous. His approach makes these creatures - and by extension, the vast cosmos of the Lotus - seem mythological. Not real. A fantasy. And that, I think, does a major injustice to the world view of the sutra.Without that? I'd give the translation 5 stars. But I think this choice on his part is sufficiently serious that it needs to be pointed out as more than just a rather bizarre translation choice.

Reviewing the Lotus Sutra is like reviewing Homer's Iliad or the Book of Jonah. It is one of the world's great wisdom texts but that doesn't mean it is an easy read. It was originally written more or less to be performed, to be chanted and brought to life by human voices, not perused from the luxury of our armchair. Reeves does an admirable attempt at translating but the use of the terms from Greek mythology still remains a problematic and unnecessary choice and in hind sight I would have probably went with another translator.

It is so delightful to have a very readable and lively translation of a scripture beloved to so many. Every time the opportunity comes I enjoy reading and reflecting on these words. Reeves companion book, "Stories from the Lotus Sutra," is also very good. This is a teaching from the heart of the mahayana, and I've always felt it's special gift was the joy of true entrustment. To experience the presence of a vast multitude of awakened and awakening beings, here for us, ever offering "skillful means" to nudge us toward discovery of the ultimate dimension, this is what turns our hearts and minds to that deep trust and confidence making the path joyous. Thanks to all the hard working and perceptive translator/ practitioners whose work of love is so fruitful.

Complete Lotus sutra - much more to it than you would think. Includes the famous 25th chapter on Guan Yin (Avalokiteshvara), Who hears all the cries of the world.

Easier to understand than the other version I have and the introduction is very good with respect to background information.

This is an easy to read translation. You don't have to be a scholar or a long time practicing Buddhist to understand this version. The Burton Watson translation is the only other one I have read. It was more difficult. Mr. Reeves' version is easier for a new Buddhist or someone who wants to read and learn about Buddhism to digest.

From Sanskrit to Chinese to English. Some areas seem to lack fluidity but that is common to any translation. This is my first reading of the Dharma of the Lotus Sutra but I am pleased with the experience.

Good quality book, easy to understand.

This is a horrible book! From constantly.trying to make non Amish people look like horrible unfeeling humans to the ending that flat out sucked. I don't even like giving it a 1 star rating quite frankly. And the little political dig about who is in the white house, really? What exactly was the point in this book anyway? Not a good read at all!!!!

I was extremely disappointed that there was a political innuendo used in this story. A negative comparison was made to our president and the terrible hospital administrator. I do not think it was appropriate and I will not support this author in the future. I read novels for escape - not to be embroiled in politics. This book will be deleted from my library.

I am getting excessively tired of books that should be a single volume being divided into 2 or 3 or more short chunks so that you have to keep paying again and again in order to finish what is (or should be) actually only one story. If the author wishes to write serials, they should be identified as such. I will be far more diligent about checking book lengths in the future. It may be old fashioned but I like a beginning, development, climax, and denouement in a book. I like to feel that the story is complete, not just a teaser so I'll keep paying for additional pieces.

This was an Amish story that looked at a different side of how the Amish live their lives. They are not immune to the illnesses of this world, though I am sure their healthy way of living doesn’t hurt them at all when it comes to staying healthy. But they can, and do, have catastrophic illnesses happen just like the rest of the world. It is how they face it that is different. Faith carries them a long way, and community plays a big part in holding things together for those in need. They are not poor by any means, not that they are wealthy, but they generally have a reasonable approach to saving for emergencies and setting money aside for rainy days. And when an individual family falls short, their neighbors are right there for them. Having worked in the medical field all my life, it was obvious the author had done her homework about what cancer treatment involves. I hope it wasn’t first hand experience for her. The whole thing with the jerk in charge of the financial side of the hospital is probably pretty unlikely. He wouldn’t have a job very long in the real world. He can fuss and carry on in his office, but you simply can’t get away with treating patients in that manner, especially underage patients. Anyone but an Amish person who doesn’t choose utilize the legal system would practically own that hospital for what he did to them. However, he made for a great “bad guy.” The doctors and nurses were all the best possible examples of caring health professionals. Most are not in it to get rich, but because they truly care about others. The community was loving and supportive for the most part. Even among the Amish, there are obviously people who “don’t get along well with others.” I am glad that this book chose to show that. I have trouble with the whole drama around wearing a mask. I have never heard anyone every equate wearing a mask with thinking they were “better” than others. There might be a stigma to wearing one, but that surely can’t be one of the reasons. But this story does not really need picking apart. It is an honest look at how cancer can affect not just the patient and their immediate family, but everyone close to them, in one way or another. It shows how much the community plays a day to day role in the lives of the Amish. Not only do they support one another in prayer, but they walk the talk of loving and caring for one another. They don’t just say they will pray for you, they are there with food, household help and money to carry someone through a rough patch or loss. A good Amish story that is focused on something other than romance for a change. There is a bit of it, but this is not your typical Amish romance!

I enjoyed this first book of Amish Sickness and Health. It is an easily read novel which pulls you into the story right away. There were many details which made me want to know a little bit more about. For instance Timothy's saying that Margarete's use of the mask was because she thought she was better than everyone else. I wanted to know a bit more about why he would say that. Then again jealousy can have an effect on us, if we let it get the best of us.Margarete's small family is quite protective of her. It, at times, seemed that her family and she were explaining her disease to everyone all the time. They were doing as we might all do, explaining the disease and reasons for certain behavior to anyone who needed to understand. The hospital administrator forcing further treatment at another hospital, further away, seemed down right mean. I myself felt like I needed to defend the Amish ways to him. It was all about the bottom line and his pride of making the hospital's goals of being in the black.I find myself yearning to know the rest of the story so much so that I purchased the remaining books in the series.

This was a great book. It starts right out with keeping my interest and never falters. It's a very easy read and well written.Margarete is almost 15 and becomes very ill. She is admitted to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment. During her lengthy hospitalization, the administrator of the hospital gets quite nasty because the Amish do not believe in insurance and even though they are making large payments the administrator doesn't want them in "his" hospital. Now you want to know what the diagnosis is? You'll just have to read it to find out.

Very simplistic writing, totally ruined by inserting politics. The story did not come to a satisfactory ending. Not very believable plot.

Oh my goodness I didn’t bother finishing the book. Why did you feel you needed to turn it political? I’m reading for relaxation and enjoyment not to read about how you feel about our president! Plus the story does not flow - very poorly written.

This was purchased as a gift for a friend. I loved this book and other Babar stories growing up. It is a sweet story and seemed perfectly fitting to gift to a soon-to-be mom with elephants as the theme for her son. The book itself appears to be made of reasonably high quality materials. The gloss on the pages was shiny, but not too shiny. The cardboard of the pages was sturdy, it feels like it will withstand years of baby and toddler drool and love.

My kids loved Babar books. We even had the stuffed Babar animals. I wasn't sure the elephant family would appeal to my two year old granddaughter. Luckily, it does. She has a lot of books that just sit on the shelf and several that she wants us to read over and over. Luckily, one of the popular books is this one. I am really pleased as I also love this unusual elephant family.

There is nothing like the classic stories for young children. I bought these for my grandchildren (4 and 5) and they love them. Nightly readings include Babar and Madeline. A subtle lesson is in each story and is portrayed in in entertaining manner.

If you don't know Babar, this is a lovely introduction. The story feels very European and somewhat dated, but it's still fun for me to read with my 11 month old daughter.

Old family favorite!!!! Love it

Great quality book! Perfect size.

My granddaughter loved the book about Babar and his children. She is almost 2 years old and just reaching the age where she can follow the plot of a story, and it kept her attention.
