#364,864 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I feel like I was slightly mislead about this book when I first started it, and so I started out this book with disappointment that just never went away as I kept reading. There is literally nothing to suggest that this book takes place in modern-day society, and yet it does. When I hear the words “viking”, my first thought is that this is going to be historical or set in a fantasy world drawn from history.Instead, I felt let down to realize that the books take place current day. The writing is addicting, and I did get hooked into the story, but there were other things that cropped up along the way that kept me from fully enjoying this book as much as I wanted to.This story is about Tess. She believed that she was an orphan and had been placed in foster homes as a child. She’s spent her whole life on the run, starting anew, and trusting no one but herself. When an ex-boyfriend (and old childhood friend she met while in foster care) shows up one day and essentially kidnaps her and takes her to a family she’s never known, her entire world changes. This is where the backstory gets a bit confusing. It’s one of those moments where you feel like a lot is explained in the book, and at the same time, feel like nothing is explained. There are mysterious children abduction involved, psychic abilities, and a nobody discovering she’s the heir and needs to learn how to be Queen with the help of two very fine gentlemen. It’s a very riveting premise that promises a MFM ménage in this book, but it just feels like a lot of the backstory is sacrificed for sex scenes.Honestly, I can take or leave sex scenes in romance books. For me, it’s more about getting to know the characters and getting a sense of who they are and learning the world-building. There are time jumps and explanations for things that get shrugged off and we, as the reader just has to accept them. I found it hard to get a real grasp on all the characters, and why they do what they do. One of Tess’s suitors is her childhood friend (and ex) called Harvey. Her other suitor is a man called Oliver. Everything is extremely rushed, and Tess is somehow immediately agreeing with everything her family is telling her. She doesn’t know them, and during her kidnapping to bring her in, she was drugged.Everything is brushed aside, and we’re expected to believe that everything’s perfect. Because the main point of the story is Tess getting together with Harvey and Ollie. It’s very disappointing. The story is intriguing, but the writing choices just don’t work for me. The secondary characters are interesting, and even with the fact that book two stars Tess, Harvey, and Ollie again, and this time with a MMF storyline…it’s not enough to make me want to read a second book.

For reasons still unknown by me, I have been avoiding menage romance. I will probably still be wary of it in the future, but I'm just going to write it off as personal preference and keep it moving. But THIS one? It was AMAZING.I was sucked in from the very beginning. The author's world building is pretty amazing. It goes back and forth from "visions" in the past to modern-day. Contessa is a Viking queen with psychic (and other) abilities. She's had a hard life, which has unwittingly prepared her to rule over and protect her small but resilient people. The men she loves, Ollie and Harvey, are so swoony! Each loves her fiercely, and wants to protect her, but also realize her full potential. These big, strapping, powerful men willingly come to heel, and it's breathtaking to read. The Sex is amazing, by the way. I think part of my skepticism (personal bias, let me just say that) regarding menage stories is that it will essentially be porn without plot. Um...foot, meet mouth. Because this author did what I didn't think was possible: she convinced me that three people could sustain a healthy, faithful, sexy, romantic relationship. The men are reluctant, but come to see how they are better as three (which actually is a huge plot point I won't spoil any further). There is some suspense, lots of steam, lovely romance, action...and my favorite bit: Women rule this world. The Viking Queen's Men is the first paranormal romance I've read in years, and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

The Viking Queen's Men is an M/F/M romance that I grabbed as a freebie the other day. I kept seeing people raving about this on romance Twitter so I started reading it right away since I'm still in the mood for fantasy romance. The main character in the book is a queen of a psychic group of people descended from Vikings. She was stolen from her family as a child and the story starts with her return to the community. She needs a mate to help balance her abilities. What came as a surprise to everyone involved was she had two fated mates instead of just one. Why have a long triangle when you can have a menage instead?😂👌🏼 It had an interesting premise but overall, it was a so-so read for me. Both the worldbuilding and character development fell short for me. Glad I gave this a try but not planning to read the rest of the series.

I wish I could give this four stars, because I really like the story and where it looks like the series is headed, but there are too many editing errors. I started highlighting all of the errors I came across, which will probably mess up some sort of Kindle stats, for which I apologize. Also, this author (and her editors) really need to learn when to use "whom". (Hint: Not as often as she thinks.)I like the story, especially how Tess didn't immediately take to her new role; she has believable stumbles along the way. I also really liked how she dealt with Harvey and Ollie.I want to read more of this series so that I can find out what happens with these three, and what happens with the conflict that was introduced at the end of the book. I really hope the editing issues are taken care of in later books in the series. If anyone can tell me that, I'd love to hear about it in a comment. If you're not bothered by editing issues, and like reading hot sex, of both the m/f and m/f/m variety, plus a bit of the paranormal go grab this. You won't be sorry.

The image of this book shows the 2015 edition which is the revised edition. The book is also listed as 'Revised for the first time'. Yet the title lists the publication date of 2003, which is a reprinted, not revised edition. Completely different cover on the 2003 edition (gold, not yellow ... no red revised label). I ordered 5 copies of this and got a 2003 edition ... not the 2015 edition shown in the photo.FYI ... the new 2015 revised edition goes into detail about internet sales/email, etc. Concepts that were a bit foreign to businesses in 2003 when the internet was still in its infancy. I have a 2015 edition and the chapters are different and the pages are different because 25+ new pages were added. The book itself is a great sales book which really allows you to understand the concept of customer focus. However, the edition information is all wrong here.

I adored Hug Your Customers: The Proven Way to Personalize Sales and Achieve Astounding Results by Jack Mitchell. The fact is, I can’t remember the last time I got so excited about the potential applications for my industry - nonprofit fundraising.Mitchell owns a high end clothing store in Westport, Connecticut. Like most brick and mortar businesses, his business was hit hard by the recession. But by switching to a customer-based business model (rather than transaction-based), Mitchell’s not only survived, they thrived! Warren Buffett refers to Hug Your Customers as “a gem … I wish everyone at Berkshire would follow [Jack Mitchell’s] advice — we would own the world.”In case you’re wondering whether this is all a bit too sentimental and touchy-feely, remember this: in Jack’s world, a hug isn’t literal — it’s a stand-in. Some of the ways Jack and his employees “hug” customers include offering someone a beverage or snack, sending a birthday or anniversary card, making reservations for a customer at a restaurant, getting tickets to a ball game or the theater, giving them a smile, lending an ear to listen…and always, always, providing exemplary customer service. They go above and beyond in ways that are truly memorable, not to mention inspiring. In the nonprofit world, some ways you might hug your donors include:Something as simple as sending out an anniversary email or card celebrating the date of their first giftRewriting your thank you email to make your donors feel wonderful about their giftMaybe, just maybe, you might even send some of your favorite donors a small giftYou’re in the relationship business. Your job is to provide exemplary donor service. It’s as simple as that. Hug Your Customers just begins to name the many ways.

I read this book after a recommendation from another business owner. Then I bought the audio. Then I bought physical copies for each of my employees to read. TAKE NOTES. Remember these stories. Run your business in the spirit of how they do business, and you will have nothing but tremendous success.

Every businessperson should read this book. It should be required reading in every business school. While other retailers are reducing service to keep overhead down, Jack Mitchell marches to a different drummer. By giving exceptional service to his customers and by treating his associates wonderfully--and indeed doing sodoes increase costs--his company, Mitchells receives repeat business from satisfied customers as well as referrals. The benefits the company receives more than make up for the added costs because Mitchells has less marketing costs--the company doesn't have to advertise as much as other companies. Every business can do what Mitchells does. It's not all that complicated. Too bad most businesspeople don't get it. Operating a customer-driven business like Mitchells is also a more enjoyable way to work. Instead of hassling customers you hug them--and they hug you back! Customers and employees are happier--and when people are happier, it creats an excellent work environment. "Hug Your Customer" has dozens of anecdotes that support Michell's pemise that are wonderful lessons, plus this is a fun book to read.

While I enjoyed this book I was very disappointed when I read other reviews and realized that I did not receive the pictured and advertised updated 2015 version but rather the 2003 edition of this book.I had to purchase this for work so it is not that important but it is very disappointing to see that it is advertised one way and sold another. I am sure a lot has changed in 15 years!!

This is my favorite business book of all time. It is a must read for everyone who works in any kind of service industry. Jack Mitchell’s “Hugging” philosophy has not only created a truly unique and irresistible experience for his customers, but has successfully grown a humble mom and pop store into a multi-million dollar company. I reread this book periodically for inspiration. Jack is a great storyteller, and his warmth and humor shine through the pages.

I purchased the audio book. By the end of the book, author and narrator Jack Mitchell seems like someone I would enjoy meeting. It is a feel good book - every day I listened to it, I felt encouraged and upbeat. So many ideas on how to improve customer service and thus sales.

Great, easy to apply concepts that your whole company can implement daily! We have our whole company of over 500 employees reading this right now.

From Library Journal

In this enjoyable first novel Grace Berggren, the daughter of an agricultural missionary, lives with her parents and sister in the Belgian Congo (now Zaire), where she experiences the curious blend of European Protestantism and African native beliefs. As a seven-year-old, Grace searches the jungle behind her house, hoping to sneak up on the elusive equator her father is always talking about. On the way to boarding school she confronts racism in its uncensored state. When her father contracts jungle fever, Grace barters for a fetish with which she can protect him. The author's flowing prose vividly presents the conflicts and struggles of a complex childhood against an exotic tropical backdrop. The book is thought-provoking and delightful. Highly recommended.?Joanna M. Burkhardt, Univ. of Rhode Island Coll. of Continuing Education Lib., ProvidenceCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Lovely, lovely story.

Margaret Meyers, the daughter of a missionary family, grew up in The Congo in the 1960s, and this 1995 collection of short stories was part of her later MFA Thesis at the University of Virginia. Through them, she introduces her lead character, Grace, who views the world with the freshness of childhood and shares her experiences with the reader. Her father tells her the equator goes right through their property and, at the age of six, she searches for it as if it would be a clearly marked path. Her favorite pastime is swimming in the river, a river she will miss terribly when she is sent off to boarding school a few years later. Her protestant Christianity is unquestioned and she's always exploring her own spirituality as well as making keen observations about the people around her. There are some memorable characters here, from her loving parents to the native Congolese who laugh at the foibles of the missionary families. There are the two spinster women with a secret, an unhappy former ballerina who has trouble adapting to her life in Africa, and a Frenchman who loves his garden almost as much as he loves his constantly changing women. Through Grace's young eyes we see the cruelty of racism and the stirrings of independence as political changes are happening in the country. At 261 pages this is a fast and enjoyable read, one that I gobbled up in two sittings, letting myself travel to the lush world of Grace's Congo and view it through her child's eyes. Mainly, it's about the people and she stays away from political analysis. She tells her stories simply and creates an atmosphere, and brings the reader right into her world. If I have any criticism at all, it is that some of the characters appear in just one of the short stories and I wanted to hear more about them as the book went on. But, alas, this is a book of stories, not a novel. I loved this book; it was a small trip into a world that is now gone and which I will never get to know except for my reading. And it sure was an enjoyable journey. Recommended.

A wonderful book, for all the reasons previous reviewers give. My own children spent some growing-up years on the Kasai, a large tributary of the Congo and had some lazy afternoons in a swim hole where we were pretty sure there were no crocs due to the fast running water. Our time in Congo/Zaire began a few years after the moon landing, after Mobotu changed the names of cities and rivers. Fortunately, I cannot think of any missionaries in our area who fit the "Madame of the Hard Mouth"! She would not have lasted long where we were--at the invitation and supervision of the national church. But no doubt this may have been a true experience in other mission enclaves in earlier years. It is interesting that the author places this story toward the end of the 60s, that period following national independence when the power gradually shifted and Hard Mouths were no longer tolerated. Interesting also that she places one of her first childhood stories, of daydreaming of being Henry Morton Stanley's Girl Friday ("I recognized the devoutly Christian soul beneath his cruelties, his grandiose boastings, and in return he trusted me.") in contrast to one of her last, of the 75-yr-old gardener, Wizamo, who had his hand sawed off as a teenage slave by King Leopold's enforcers on the rubber plantations. Stanley was Leopold's right-hand gunman in opening up the Congo River basin to Leopold's reign of terror. (see King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild) Grace's coming of age when she leaves childhood behind is also in Wizamo's story, her enlightenment of the real history. Wizamo tells a frightened Grace: "They paid no price for almost killing me, you understand, but I have paid for sixty years because I didn't work hard enough as slave labor on the mondele's [white's] rubber plantation. I have pulled weeds from your mindele [whites'] gardens and thought of murder. It is well for you, all of you, that you are too powerful to be touched." I look forward to reading her 2014 book.

"Swimming in the Congo" by Margaret Meyers is a very good novel that reads like a collection of short stories. It is told in the first-person by a girl, daughter of missionary parents, growing up in the Belgian Congo, circa 1960. The stories are focused on the narrator and her memories of her parents and the local people (Congolese and ex-pats) in and near missionary communities. Issues the seven-year narrator deals with include the mix of American Protestant and African traditional beliefs she encounters; the meaning of the equator and scientific reality; and White racism towards the Congolese. Meyers' writing reads well and is easy to like. It would be interesting to see her story continued.

... you'll love SWIMMING IN THE CONGO! This is a collection of short stories that reads like a novel. In it, young Grace Birggen, the daughter of an agricultural missionary to the Congo in the 1960's, comes of age along the banks of the Congo River in what is now Zaire. The stories are beautifully written and the descriptions of her childhood in an emerging third-world nation are compelling. It is POISONWOOD without the poison. Yes, there are incidents of imperialism and racism, but those incidents are filtered through Grace's eyes, in much the same way that Scout narrates Boo Radley's and Tom Robinson's stories in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and so will you.

and although I grew up in Nigeria, during the 80's, this book brought back so many memories. Not only were her descriptions of the continent breathtakingly vivid, her pre-teen thoughts on subjects like the unforgivable sin and sexuality also brought back memories. There is more to being a missionary child in Africa than the "wildness" and Meyers captures the subtlties with grace and fluidity. Absolutely gorgeous.

I bought this book to use with my son and daughter so we could identify wildflowers we see along our country roads and also to identify wildflowers that we pick to press for projects. Some of the most common flowers that we see around NYS aren't found in this book. It seems like some of the less common wildflowers are included instead. Sometimes from the descriptions it's still difficult to determine and identify the flowers we found. That being said, I ordered the shell book in this series for the beach and we found that book much more useful!

Help your child increase their powers of observation, connect with nature and learn about the world around them with this series of "Field Guide" science books for young children. You can begin by using these to educate yourself and prepare for your nature walks with your very young child, 2 to 3 years. It will help you point out interesting things to look at and give you vocabulary you can introduce in a casual way.But these are probably best suited for a child who can already read and take notes on what they observe, ages 7 and up.This is just one in a series that includes Rabbits and Squirrels, Birds, Nests and Eggs, Animal Tracks, just to name a few.

Great gift for 8yo niece. Paired this book with a flower press kit

I buy these books for my gifted 5 year old grandchild. She loves them. and takes them with herwhen she is outside walking and playing with her mother.

Bought for Birthday Present for 9 year old that has become quiet an outdoors girl. Book is easy to understand and has scrape book pages in the back for her to add her own little touches.

Very informative book. Well detailed.

It's written for kids but I love it for adults as well. Easy to understand, just enough information to get an idea about the wildflowers, no unnecessary details. I enjoy its simplicity tremendously.

Book sounded reasonable on Amazon - but I was somewhat disappointed by the very light content. The pics are good but there is precious little besides that.

As a lover of Thai food, I expected more variety in dishes. There are a couple recipes that I may try, but overall I don't feel very inspired. The photos are in black and white which adds to the blah mood of this book.

Thai Takeout Cookbook: Favorite Thai Food Takeout Recipes to Make at Home by Lina ChangTable of contents broken up into meals, free gift, Intro about Thai cuisine, history, ingredients used most often and why. Lots of terms I'm unfamiliar with but there are descriptions of them and how they are used in the recipes. Also list of equipment used in making the recipes is discussed, along with cooking methods. Each recipe has a title (English and Thai) servings, prep and cook time. Big color photo and list of ingredients. How to make the dish but there is NO nutritional information.Lots of ingredients and time to put it all together. Salmon Teriyaki would be our choice to makeOther works by the author are highlighted at the end.

Got this as a Christmas gift for a friend that likes to cook. He is currently dabbling with Thai cuisine and I thought this would be helpful with easy recipes. Can't wait to be invited for a meal. I got fired up browsing through it and bought one for myself. Excited to give these a try.

This cookbook delivers exactly what it promises, excellent Thai takeout recipes. The layout is very user friendly and the photography is well done!

A very compact, nicely explained recipe book explaining Thai cooking --- from what utensils you need, equipment, supplies, recipes for basic sauces and had really lovely pictures of the items cooked!

Simple,good but seems incomplete

We love Thai take out food but the best Thai restaurant is 12 miles away. This cookbook makes it easy to make what we love. The only thing I would suggest is a photo of every dish. Photos would give a visual to compare our creations against.

Found recipes that I experienced in Warwick Thai

I keep a few of these around at all times for friends who seem like they could use it. Despite what the title implies, I don't think of this as a religious book, more like a philosophy book. Its also rare that I say things like this, but this book truly changed my life.

This book has such a different take on talking with God that I look forward to reading volumes 2 & 3. The author has written this in such a way that it is easy to follow and understand the subject at hand. It is a good read and leaves you feeling that the answers have been right there all along even though you didn't even know or realize it.It is an uncommon dialogue the author has with God but just may be what is needed at times in life when it seems there is no answer when the opposite is true. The ending is very well worded and lets you know God is always with you. I recommend this book to anyone.

A book that shines a light on the God I’ve known in my heart who is nothing like the punishing one I was raised to believe in. Thank you God and ND Walsh for getting this to us!Whenever I forget and become depressed I reread this book to remember

LIFE CHANGING BOOK. The first section is a bit slow going... but... if you stick with it, you will be so pleased. I wish I had read this book 20 years ago. I give it to everyone I know. I bought 3 copies. One to keep, One as a gift & One as a lender to anyone open to a wonderfully new and fresh perspective. Put your preconceived notions aside. This is one of the BEST books I have ever read.

I truly don't know what to think about this book. It stunned me that anyone would have the courage to pen something like this. I have to credit him for his bravery in getting this out there. There are some very compelling things here that are worth seriously thinking about. But it's unclear to me whether this is "God" he is channeling or just his thoughts about religion and life in general. There seemed to be a lot of frustration in the writings, which would indicate that there is so much that is subjective here. Perhaps I just didn't believe it, but something did not resonate with me.

I'm a big fan of the Law of Attraction books and recently read Creating your Own Deja Vu by Barry Robin (Highly recommend it. I have been reading and listening to Abraham Hicks for about four years now. I came across this book after reading a Mike Dooley book. This book is phenomenal! It goes much deeper than Abraham Hicks. Whereas Abraham Hicks is a lot about how can I make more money, this book is more about general questions (why is the world this way, why does this person have this illness, etc). The writing in this book is amazing and the message is profound and life changing. I wish I would have had this book for years. I thank the author for his courage in sharing this book.

I have a Ph.D. in Comparative Religion and have read a LOT of books on philosophy and religion. I can honestly say that Conversations with God Book 1 was the most profound and impactful book I have ever read. In fact, if I could have only read one book in my entire life it would be CwG book 1. Due to my experience, I have sought out and have spent quite a bit of time with the author, Neale Donald Walsch. Neale, both in person and in his writings, is in the top 10 most influential people in my life. As a result of the CwG dialog my life has been transformed and will never be the same.

Each reader, each seeker of knowledge, must listen to their own internal voice on anything that is presented to them. What resonates with you as truth, is truth. With me, this inspired text - while far from complete knowledge of all that is - is truth. An outline of everything a human should know about life purpose on Earth, our Creator, and how to live life to our fullest potential; for that potential is truly unlimited.

Marlena: A Novel, by Julie Buntin

Review

"At the center of Julie Buntin’s debut novel is the kind of coming-of-age friendship that goes beyond camaraderie, into a deeper bond that forges identity; it’s friendship as a creative act, a collaborative work of imagination. . .This generous, sensitive novel of true feeling. . . sweeps you up without too much explication, becoming both a painful exorcism and a devoted memorial to friends and selves who are gone." -The New York Times Book Review"Excellent....a wild, gorgeous evocation...[Buntin’s] lyricism is precise and revelatory, capable of great beauty and, when called for, great ugliness. Marlena is a novel about youth―a time of splendor and squalor. Buntin make us see, hear and feel both." -The San Francisco Chronicle"A vivid portrait of a friendship between two teen girls in a troubled community that captures the heartaches of adolescence...At every turn, Buntin’s prose flows with the easy, confident rhythms of an accomplished writer, and though there’s really no mystery in the narrative, it reads nearly as compulsively as a thriller...The tale of two friends, one who succeeds and one who fails, isn’t new―it’s the entire focus of Elena Ferrante’s wildly popular Neapolitan books. But it remains fascinating nonetheless, especially in Buntin’s capable hands." -The Boston Globe"Julie Buntin’s standout debut novel, Marlena. . . cannily interweaves two different time frames to capture an electric friendship and its legacy. . . .Buntin is attuned to the way in which adolescent friends embolden and betray. . . .Cat is a keen observer of all the markers of upward mobility: in this case, a New York life complete with a literary job and a kind, stable husband who makes dinner. The novel’s most impressive passages concern the watermark that remains, visible in the light of too many after-work martinis, and in attempts at adult friendships."-Vogue, "Girls on the Verge""It's still so early in 2017 that calling something a best debut novel of the year is a dicey thing to try and do. But if the Lorrie Moore blurb on the front cover doesn't tip you off that Julie Buntin's Marlena is a book you should be paying attention to, the fact that the author created something that could easily be called the millennial Midwestern version of the celebrated Elena Ferrante Neapolitan Novels crossed with Robin Wasserman's great Girls on Fire, should do the trick."-Rolling Stone"In this icy and accomplished first novel, the intoxicating friendship between an inexperienced loner and her manic, wild-child neighbor continues to exert an irresistible pull on our narrator decades later"-O, the Oprah Magazine“Julie Buntin’s debut novel, Marlena.. . .joins a glut of recent novels that pair a retrospective female narrator with an extravagantly charismatic but troubled friend. . . .But Marlena, unlike the others, seems to be aware of the complicity of these kinds of stories in perpetuating the mystique of girls who go wrong. . . .Buntin vividly captur[es] the slow, blurry creep of intoxication. The value of novels like Marlena .. . is how insightfully they capture the complex intensity of girlhood that can’t see yet how exquisitely vulnerable it is.” -The Atlantic, "My Brilliant (Doomed) Friend""Riveting, assured debut novel ...Marlena is propulsive and gripping...Buntin excels at capturing the longing and intensity of being a teenager... Buntin. . .creat[es] characters so nuanced and true-to-life you’d swear you were remembering them yourself."-Bookforum"A quiet, powerful look at addiction." -The New York Times, "3 Books Take a Deeper Look at the Opioid Epidemic""Magnetic" -Vogue"A gorgeous, knowing debut that will make you reflect on the people who continue to shape our lives long after we leave them behind."–Marie Claire"Haunting"–Harper's Bazaar "[A] mesmerizing debut . . .Buntin weaves an indelible portrait of friendship."-Harper's Bazaar "14 Best new Books to Read in April""Marlena is a gorgeous portrayal of what it’s like to be a teenage girl, and an even more gorgeous exploration of the events that transform the woman a teenage girl grows into."-Newsweek"Just when you think you’ve read every story there is to tell about teenage female friendships, along comes Julie Buntin with a story about two female teenagers so haunting that you can barely remember the names of those other books you’ve read...Stunning."-Roar"Stunning debut...stellar first novel...Buntin captures the agony, ecstasy, and lasting impact of adolescent friendship"-Real Simple"Brilliant...Marlena so perfectly captures the bottomless need and desire of teenage girls and the reckless abandon with which they lives their lives...If you've ever been a teenage girl who loved and lived a little too hard for your own good, Marlena will resonate on a cellular level." -NYLON"Astonishing first novel...Provocatively honest." -Pif"I tore through this stunning debut. . . .maddening, complicated, beautiful, essential. . . .Buntin beautifully captures that time in our lives, when our reliance on our friends feels as profound as our need for water or air." -NYLON, 50 Books We Can't Wait to Read in 2017"A novel that’s as invigorating and devastating as an intense teenage crush, Marlena is about the people we encounter in life ― no matter how briefly ― who leave a permanent mark. Julie Buntin’s stellar debut has the emotional sophistication of only the very best coming-of-age novels, so it’s no wonder it comes with a glowing blurb from Who Will Run the Frog Hospital author Lorrie Moore." -Vulture, 25 of the Most Exciting Book Releases for 2017"Julie Buntin’s debut novel. . .will fill you with rich longing for the kind of faith and fascination friends once inspired. . .If you can swing it, I recommend meeting a good friend in a dark bar to discuss this book." -New York Magazine"A buzzy debut that melds psychological suspense with pure literary fiction" -Huffington Post, 2017 Book Preview"Riveting, heartrending"-BuzzFeed, "31 Incredible New Books You Need to Read This Spring""It’s rare that a literary novel gives me the feeling that Marlena did. . . .compelling, compulsory. . .[An] ice-clean story of two girls, one doomed, one in thrall, and what will happen to drag them both down into traps of their own making."-LitHub, "15 Books to Read This April""Sensitive and smart and arrestingly beautiful, debut novelist Buntin's tale of the friendship between two girls in the woods of Northern Michigan makes coming-of-age stories feel both urgent and new. . . .Buntin creates a world so subtle and nuanced and alive that it imprints like a memory. Devastating; as unforgettable as it is gorgeous."–Kirkus, starred review“A keenly observed study of teenage character. . .poignant and unforgettable”–Publishers Weekly, starred review“[A] vivid debut. . . .Buntin’s prose is emotional and immediate, and the interior lives she draws of young women and obsessive best friends are Ferrante-esque.” –Booklist, starred review“The gifted young writer Julie Buntin has written a novel of deep and exquisite intelligence, humor, and riveting sensitivity. A terrific debut.”–Lorrie Moore“Julie Buntin captures that unique moment at the precipice of adulthood with emotional honesty and insight. She writes the kind of piercing, revelatory sentences you have to read to whomever is near, sentences you find yourself remembering years later.”–Jonathan Safran Foer"Marlena is absolutely lacerating. The most accurate portrait I’ve read about angst, lust, boredom, and the blindness of youth. It isn’t merely a friendship chronicle, nor is it a profile of a doomed, beautiful girl. It’s the story of a haunting, about the ghosts that never release us and continue to define us. Julie Buntin’s command of her craft is so flawless you forget that it’s fiction. I binge-read Marlena - sick to my stomach, with equal parts fear and nostalgia- stunned that any of us made it out of our adolescence alive." –Stephanie Danler, author of Sweetbitter"The true magic of Julie Buntin is she writes stories that feel like your own. This gorgeous, assured debut captures the romance of young friendship, cutting deep with the finest touch."–Julia Pierpont, author of Among the Ten Thousand Things"Marlena slayed me. Gorgeously written, with a sense of place so perfect I didn't even have to close my eyes to pretend I was there, this novel is rich and sensuous and beautifully conceived. Buntin writes about the all-consuming bond between teenage girls with urgency and suspense and despair. I loved every word."–Anton DiSclafani, bestselling author of The After Party and The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls"In Marlena, Julie Buntin revitalizes a classic story making it all her own with sensuous, vibrant prose and a narrator who feels deeply even as she feints certain painful truths about herself. In these pages I not only saw my own story, I came to understand it better. Many readers will too. This is a fierce and gorgeous debut."–Edan Lepucki, bestselling author of California

A beautiful account of two teenage girls by a writer with extraordinary insight into the high-stakes emotions of adolescence, the allure of self-destructive behavior, and the complexity, conflict, pain and joy of intense female friendship.

I really loved this book even though it was a heart-wrenching one. Part of the reason I was so able to emotionally connect with this story and characters is because I'm from Michigan. I was born in Pontiac which is where Kat and her family move from and we spent the summers on our lake property outside of Traverse City. There aren't many fiction books set in Michigan, or at least I haven't come across them.My heart broke for Marlena. Life isn't fair and some of us get dealt a tougher hand than others. Some kids have all this potential and no one to nurture them so it just goes wasted. It's awful. My heart also broke for Kat as I know how crippling survivor guilt can be and how it can keep you from being happy because you think you don't deserve to be. You always think 'I should have done more'.There is joy in the book too, that special feeling you get when you've found that friend, the one who intrigues you and turns the world into different colors then it was before.Even though you know Marlena dies from the beginning of the book, it still affects you because the author drew her so vividly and you feel like you know her and then all that bright promise is snuffed out.Why was I so upset about a character in a book? Because I've known a Marlena or two in my life and they are a part of who I am. The author mentions her friend Lea in the acknowledgements in the back of the book and I think that's why she starts the book with the quote "I'll make my report as if I told a story for I was taught as a child that truth is a matter of the imagination."This book is for all the Marlena's out there who were trapped and for all the Kat's who got away and carried them forward with them in their hearts.

This book, with its vivid and piercing prose, brought me back to my own experiences in high school—to the insecurity and recklessness, the urgency that bonds teenage girls together, the regrets that still plague me to this day. After being uprooted to a dismal Michigan town in the middle of nowhere, Cat is immediately drawn to her next-door neighbor, Marlena, who is everything she's not: beautiful, mysterious, daring, experienced. The two girls quickly become inseparable, and Cat's days and nights become a blur of drinking and drugs—ecstasy, meth, Oxys.Cat recalls their times together years later as a 34-year-old adult. We know early on that Marlena died shortly after turning 18, and that Cat had been racked with survivor's guilt ever since. She admits to being an unreliable narrator, acknowledging that her memories are tainted by nostalgia, making Marlena out to be grander than she was.Of course, this is often how memory and nostalgia function—the good cements into your mind while the bad is relegated to the back. There's a lot that was uncomfortably familiar about this book for me, and I suspect many female readers might feel the same way. Buntin really nails the experience of being a teenage girl in a rural town, when alcohol and drugs are all you have to break up the overwhelming monotony and angst. The sense of place she establishes is just as vivid and essential as the characters. My one main critique of this book is that it gets a little clunky going back and forth from teenage Cat to adult Cat—the latter interrupting the flow of the former. But Buntin's writing is the kind I was able to immerse myself in, so that I smelled what Cat and Marlena smelled, tasted what they tasted, felt what they felt.

I can't say enough good things about this book. Possibly the most compassionate characterization of teen drug-users I've seen. Buntin's writing does not beg the reader for sympathy either. This is neither a DARE ad nor an episode of Degrassi. It's an honest story, told with the nuance it deserves. There are no perfect victims or saviors here, but you'll still want to protect the characters as if they were your own friends. Also, full disclosure: the author taught a fiction workshop I took in college. In this book, her voice is so present it's insane. Dr. Jerry Williams hates the word relatable, but you know what I mean -- this book feels like someone asking if you've ever felt a very specific thing, and you're like, "Yes oh my god I know exactly what you mean." Resonant! That's the word. Julie Buntin's writing is both (1) her own, unmistakably so, and (2) deeply resonant.

Oh the glory days and oh all of the different paths we could choose while we're young. Have you ever wished that you could press the rewind button on your life and go back? Do you sometimes find yourself reminiscing on days gone by? Days that aren't so great but yet somehow shaped who you are today? Stuff that others couldn't remember if you dare share the memory with them? This book is all tainted youth, wonderfully dangerous mistakes that you would only tell to your diary. It's beautiful in its own way...especially to those who relish in their disastrous youth.

Marlena is a brave book about young women seeking identities that reach beyond the prescribed limitations of their time and gender. Because that reach is at times desperate, this book roils with that combination of anxiety and fierceness that is adolescence. The characters are real and raw and often fraught with the menace of lurking evil. And yet there is a vulnerable naiveté in the devotion these young girls have to each other and their often agonizingly clueless families. An uncomfortable look at how rural America is barely surviving in 21st century USA.
