Peter M. Kettner is Professor Emeritus at the Arizona State University School of Social Work. He is the author of six books, 50 articles, monographs, and book chapters on the topics of purchase-of-service contracting, privatization, macro practice in social work, human services planning, and social work administration. Over his 30 year career in academia he served as a consultant to five different state human service agencies and dozens of local nonprofit agencies on their purchase of service contracting practices and in the design and implementation of effectiveness-based planning systems. The book is truly engaging and well researched. He corrected some things I thought I knew about mail order marriage, And helped explain the wide spread misconception. I think there’s a good balance here between the scholarly and the entertaining, but this is a book with footnotes so don’t expect to finish it in a single sitting. I wouldn’t recommend multitasking either, but on the wholeIt’s not very long or difficult. It’s just very informative.

My son was cited in this book on page 221-2 so I had to buy it for him! I also found it to be quite a fascinating read!

This was an excellent, well-researched, and informative book that was also really easy to read. I ended up knowing far more about the complexity of this than I knew before, and like how it unpacks the complexities of money, power, and gender in this situation. From reading this, I better realized we all make choices in the face of our specific circumstances, and sometimes those circumstances aren't readily apparent to those on the outside.

This is an interesting and balanced look at the mail order bride issue. Unlike some modern rants about mail order brides, this book actually presents facts when available and points out that many rants have no data supporting those rants.

Hands up if you thought that mail-order brides were a relatively new phenomena, restricted perhaps to some Asian and eastern European countries. You would be wrong…The author of this wonderfully engaging book looks at mail-order brides from an American perspective and it has its roots deep in history, importing ladies from many countries. In earlier times it was viewed as a form of future breeding stock and necessary to bring balance to the predominantly male pioneers. When there was difficulty attracting females to be exported, it could be time to dragoon in some convicts, trick a few people or make a very, very compelling offer and promise (that may be latterly broken).Abuse, deception, trickery and failure has accompanied each successive wave of mail-order brides over time, although through adversity and trouble has also come empowerment and opportunity for some women. The author has dug into a rich seam of long-forgotten legal cases to bring this fascinating book to life. It does not hector or judge, but highlights a broad range of problems ranging from breach of contract to human trafficking and prostitution and these issues are not things consigned solely to the history books.This is a meticulously researched book that could give much to the academic researcher whilst remaining open and accessible to the casual, interested reader. It was one of those great little finds that was hard to put down, despite it being a subject that might not have ordinarily been in the middle of this reviewer’s reading focus.There’s not a lot more to add. If you hadn’t considered this book but are open to reading something different, take a chance on it and prepare to be lost in the book for a fair few evenings!

What a fantastic, fantastic chronicle! Detailing the various experiences and accounts of mail order brides, Buying a Bride: An Engaging History of Mail-Order Matches digs deep and delivers a no-holds-barred narrative on a subject that has been left (until now) to modern documentaries and fan-fiction that barely scratches the surface. Going into this, I suppose I expected something a little more like "Birthday Girl", but was instead engrossed in a fascinating history dating back to the founding of the US. Despite sometimes reading like a textbook, Buying a Bride is a captivating study. Zug forces a conversation about the good, the bad, and the ugly, but does so with a weapon that few will be able to argue with: The truth.I'd like to thank Net Galley and the publisher, NYU Press, who furnished an ARC of this book.

This history of "mail-order brides," or matrimonial immigration, is well-written, fast-paced, and downright fascinating. Most Western minds balk at the thought of marrying a virtual stranger based on financial exchange and lifestyle compatibility rather than love, but as Marcia A. Zug points out in Buying a Bride, the love match tradition is relatively new--less than a century ago, people were marrying each other for much more pragmatic reasons. The question here is, were they right, or are we? If you are a strong believer in a match based purely on love, don't be surprised if you find yourself questioning your views by the end of this thoroughly researched apology for the way things were.I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

If you have "case" of chronic IBS you should build a little library of lit on it.This book is simple and easy to read and does what any good book should do, make you think. I thought and analyzed my diet - I have been irritated for about 8 months now but think I have it wrapped up. Interestingly I had it solved a few times but it came back, but this to me was in the process of identifying what I may be reacting to.I run a lot. When I increased my mileage to over 60 a week I started having issues. I thought it may have been running. I took 6 weeks off - no change. I ran again. I have increased my mileage and intensity back, with IBS, and there was no difference.To make a long story short. I would have short fasts (10 - 15 hrs) which always cleared the issue. I would eat foods I don't normally eat and things were fine, but I make some mistakes along the way. I thought it was coffee, so stopped drinking it. I thought it was dairy and stopped eating this category of food. What I did read, in a running book, was try replacing the morning coffee with OJ - since coffee inhibits vitamin C uptake the avoidance of coffee would be beneficial in several ways: more vit C from OJ, more hydrated as coffee is a diuretic, and more hydrated in general (which would also help effects of IBS and water loss).Then is dawned! Citrus. I have not had citrus in a week and my IBS has gone down. Remember the little library - yup - no book will answer all. I discovered that perhaps what I am dealing with is a citrus intolerance (not an allergy) and as I gave up coffee and increased my dose of OJ my reactions became stronger: logically so, in hindsight.I may not be "cured" yet - but think I am there. I have isolated foods that have triggered IBS and am now comfortable for the first time in weeks.The book will give you ways to think. It develops your knowledge and will give to other ideas to follow. Be your own detective with IBS because as I am learning the interactions are quite complex and an average family doctor will not have the time to deal with your case. If you are at a health facility that you need to see a new practitioner each visit (many places have these) you really need to become your own detective. Buy the book - quite simple.I remember reading a criticism something along the lines that the book was a self-promo for the author's clinic: it's not so. BUT - if I was on my second year of IBS I would seriously consider a visit to such a specialist as my health is quite important to me.I do think the book needs a better index to make it easier to find simple terms.

I credit this book as the beginning of the end of my years of suffering with IBS. Armed with this new knowledge, I went to my internist and told her I had learned in Dr. Wangen's book that IBS can result from one of three major causes: food sensitivity, bacterial imbalance, or parasite infection. She immediately sent me to the lab for an ova/parasite test and, sure enough, I had cryptosporidiosis, a protozoan intestinal infection. All it took was three pills of Alinia (nitazoxanide) over a course of three days to kill the protozoa.Cryptosporidiosis cases must be reported to health departments. A woman from my county health division followed up with a telephone call to try and trace the source of the contamination, which can often be a restaurant, impure water, or even a swimming pool. She said, contrary to the literature on the subject which says a typical infection is acute for just a couple of weeks of extreme diarrhea, most people have chronic cases for several years which involve painful intestinal cramping and soft stools that keep you house bound a good part of the day. After treatment, the symptoms frequently intensify for a few weeks as the parasites die off, as was my case. She said doctors often don't think to test for ova and parasites. I had been to a gastroenterologist for the problem a year ago and was diagnosed with diverticulitis. The antibiotics, Flagyl and Cipro, did nothing to help the problem, so I question the accuracy of that diagnosis. Since my colonoscopy was clear, the doctor just said "reduce stress and increase fiber." I had to laugh when I read in Dr. Wangen's book how doctors frequently send patients out the door with those exact instructions.I originally ordered this book as an ebook from Dr. Wangen's site, but I couldn't read it on my iPad. So I ordered the Kindle version from amazon.com and it worked great. Very small price to pay for very big relief.

This book is well written and full of understandable, rational explanations and, significantly, hope. Not just hope, but hope for a cure. So different from everythign else I have learned about this syndrome, this group of very conventional, scientific doctors, states you just need to look in the right places and a cause will be found for the varied, and sometimes fluctuating, symptioms of this problem. In fact, I am now planning to make a trip to their clinic to get evaluated and hopefuilly cured!

Book is a wonderfully written discussion of the why's and how's of IBS and had information that was knew to me even after reading several other books. It gave me hope that I could possibly get rid of my IBS problem which I have suffered from for 3.5 years. I would love to go to the Seattle IBS clinic for tests and evaluation. I'm saving my $'s to do that,

This book gave me the right questions & test to figure out a cure for me. I have set up appointments to get a cure. I have contacted Dr Wangen & he called me back personally! If my doctors down south can't help me I will be going to Seattle to see him! He knows what hell IBS is!!

A simplistic book packed with needed information. The author answered questions that were rolling around in my head (ie local tourist attractions, types and locations of restaurants, weather, money exchange,etc.) and questions I didn’t formulate (how to deal with “time share hawks”, navigating the airport, and why drinking the water can result in Montezuma’s Revenge). I appreciate being able to use the book as a quick reference as it is separated into logical topics and provides local phone numbers.

Gives only very general info with no advice on local transportation and no maps. There is so little helpful info that I cannot recommend this to anyone. I downloaded the Kindle version. Will be deleting it.

Information in the book was decent. But the formatting of the kindle edition was terrible. You could not go directly to the ToC, nor from it directly to any section. Their were no visible page numbers or any other way to easily go to a particular part. Had to basically thumb through page after page trying to find the desired section.

A very good guide to the best places to see in Puerto Vallarta.

Pretty good info but a little more insight on places to go or deals to seek would b nice to have

I purchased this as a gift (requested) for my 9-year old daughter, who very much enjoys playing PopTropica. She refers to it frequently and it has enabled her to finish several islands with a much lower level of frustration than she might otherwise have had :) The book includes a very nice paper map--be careful not to tear it when you pull it out!I would definitely recommend this book and hope that an updated version will be released that includes the more recently created islands.

It has a lot of helpful information about older islands on Poptropica.

My son is 8 (got this guide when he was 7) and has read this guide many times over. He likes to go on the computer and play Poptopica. He says that this guide is not as helpful for the Nintendo DS game but loves it for the computer version. This guide gives you step by step directions/tips on how to beat some of the worlds.

My grandson loves this game! As I watched him play it and he filled me in on what he was doing, I would definitely recommend it and/or buy again if need be. I like the thinking involved and the decision-making needed to play well.

my 7yo, who does not enjoy reading, loved it. well, let me say, i bribed him into reading it. the bribe went something like this....you wanna play Poptropica online?? then read the chapter first. it worked. he read it, he loved it. it is an easy, entertaining read, as i knew it would be for him. he completed the book, played the game, everyone lived happily ever after.

I haven't personally used this book, but I have looked at some parts of it and see why it is useful to my ten year old. She is able to enjoy her time playing Poptropica more now that she has this resource available to her. She uses it a lot, and has commented on how much she loves this book!

daughter wanted this for christmas and she has loved it! Wonderfully written and colorfully illustrated. A must have for all Poptropica gamers
