Some years ago, Clark Kerr, then president of the University of California, said: "The purpose of a university is to make students safe for ideas--not ideas safe for students." More recently, "thought police" operating on all levels of education and from all parts of the political spectrum have taken the opposite tack. In a thoughtful analysis of free expression, Hentoff indicts those from the right and the left who would suppress the rights of individuals to voice opposing viewpoints. An older book. It shows how some on the left and right want to limit free speech. Nat Hentoff was one of the biggest defenders of free speech and this book didn’t pull any punches.

A book everyone should read!

Excellent book. Almost a convert to porn as a form of free speech. However, Obscenity does NOT fall under the category of free and protected speech, and can, indeed, be censored. This is the greater feminist issue.

As someone who has advocated free speech over the course of the past half century, during which my personal beliefs have ranged from the radical left to the radical right with stops in between, I read with a great deal of interest this classic by Nat Hentoff, one of the great champions of freedom of speech. This is a must read for anyone at all interested in maintaining freedom of speech, even when one finds that speech highly offensive. Hentoff provides the reader with many real-life examples of how people advocate free speech for themselves but seek to censor the free speech of others. While the particular examples Hentoff notes are a bit outdated (the book having been published a few decades ago), his overall point remains valid. Many of those on both the right and the left are far more interested in protecting their own freedom of speech than in acknowledging that right for their political opponents.

I first became familiar with Nat Hentoff in the mid-1990s when teaching a college-level class in applied ethics. One of the issues we covered was free speech. Having read other books by free speech advocates as well as the writings of those who try to justify censorship, I can safely say that Hentoff's "Free Speech for Me But Not for Thee" is the best volume on the issue, particularly because of the numerous real-life examples he provides. His book describes numerous occasions when speech has been censored by those on both ends of the political spectrum. As a person who leans Left, it is most interesting that more than half of his examples are taken from situations in which the political Left has censored the freedom of speech of those with whom they disagree. One of his most gripping stories is of his defense of the right of members of the American Nazi Party to hold a demonstration in the Chicago suburb of Skokie (a suburb with a heavily Jewish population, many of whom at the time were Holocaust survivors). The ANP had been denied a permit to march and had appealed to the courts. They had asked the ACLU to intervene on their behalf. The ACLU refused. To Hentoff, this smacked of hypocrisy, for it was obvious to him that the ACLU's advocacy of free speech was selective, something to which some people and groups were entitled, but not all. Hentoff (as well as other free speech advocates) left the ACLU as a result.This is just one of many stories Hentoff tells. Anyone who desires to know more about how our civil liberties are being eroded, particularly our right to freedom of speech, should read Hentoff's book. While the examples are a little bit outdated, the principles remain. In this day and age, when those on both sides of the political spectrum try to stifle their opponents by denying them the right to an open forum, this book is must reading.

This book is breeze to read and an interesting look at some old favorites (Millay, for example) from a really specialized perspective.As a heavy reader of American writes, I found much of this book quite "surface." I mean , you can get most of that Hemingway stuff from a passable tv biography. I would have actually liked the book to be about twice as long, to feature more quotes, and to cover some more obscure authors/dig deeper into the favorites.That said, it was a really easy and interesting book that made me want to revisit some old texts. And have a drink.

What a clever, funny, riveting and unexpectedly educational romp of a book! As are all Monte Beauchamp's books, the artwork is colorful and spectacular. Bravo, Greg Clarke and Monte Beauchamp!

Ordered it as a gift, and my daughter, an avid reader who appreciates a good cocktail, loved it.

This is a great book that organizes history, literary talent, and booze in a way that to this novice seems unprecedented. Old school drinking is returning, old cocktail recipes are reemerging, and this is the perfect, complimentary bar guide. Messrs. Clarke and Beauchamp have done a spectacular job: the illustrations throughout are beautiful, and the book is so dense and thick with interesting historical tidbits - really well written. Congratulations on a real gem of a book!

This is a gorgeous piece of work for the drinking man (or woman) to crack open when having a few cocktails. Filled with brilliant illustrations and slyly told anecdotes, the book inspires one to drink deeply and intensely of the rich history of getting soused whilst composing great prose. The recipes inspire as well, and will be tested carefully very soon to assure their accuracy and efficacy.

The writing is exceptional and slowly, as I got really into the book, I discovered that the subject was one in which I, as I am sure many others do, have a very difficult time reading. The author has woven her own story about having been molested as a child, by a family member, alongside a true crime story that she researched as a young law student, about a man, who was a pedophile, involved in a murder.The two stories are so intense, that although, both hard to read, I became engrossed in the reactions of her family as well as the town’s, to this criminal, his family’s as well as the length that the trials went on, and on.The book is beyond a memoir. It combines true crime, with the author’s imagined scenarios of what went on in various courtroom settings during the trials and how she follows this man’s crime as well as the victim to understand what was done to her, and ultimately to free herself of her haunting past.It is brave, scary, revealing, and a look into a world that you would otherwise not know. I commend her for her diligence, for confronting her family, for writing this book, for having the courage to explore such a difficult subject that must have been painful with every single piece of research that she did and every single word that she wrote. This book will leave you thinking about hard issues about our legal system, mental health treatment, the death penalty, and familial responsibility.To read about other people’s situations that you might otherwise never know, despite their outward appearance, their present success, is eye-opening. To know what they have overcome and how they have done so, is remarkable.

First, I'm disturbed by so many bad reviews of this book, reviews that are clearly based in a lack of understanding of genre. This book is NOT A TRUE CRIME book. Period. If you're looking for that, don't buy it or read it. So many people talk about how it doesn't move quickly, or how do the two stories connect (they do, for thoughtful readers, and the writer makes that so evident that I can only assume some reviewers either didn't really read the book carefully or simply ignored the clear connections the author is making. Her entire point here is that through exploring the horrible death of a boy, she learns to explore her own trauma.) I have no interest in "true crime" myself, which has, to me, always felt ugly and voyeuristic: people reading about other people's pain for entertainment. Other people might feel quite differently about it, but that's my take. This book does explore an only tangentially connected case, a murder case that author first encountered as a law intern. The case is a way for her to explore her own trauma and history, and she does both exceptionally well.What she does well: this is probably one of the best representations of PTSD and the effects of childhood trauma from sexual abuse that I've ever read. It is so well done, in fact, that I had to put it down several times, so content warnings for those who have survived similar trauma: this book is very difficult to read at times. That said, reading through it, sometimes tense in my chair, I started to understand my own reactions, even the reactions I was having as I read it. I think others who have suffered trauma, especially sexual abuse as a child, will find much of value in this book, even as it is difficult. Also, I did not want to have sympathy for the murderer in this book. As the author clearly states, neither did she. She wanted him to die. I did too. And yet, she manages to do something I certainly could not: she explores his life in obsessive detail and she presents a complex picture of a man who did horrible horrible things. And yet, she makes him human. She tries, also to do this with her grandfather, and I think it is clear that part of the book is about exploring what it means to be a person who could do this sort of thing to a child. She has no answers for us. There are no answers. But her strength and tenacity in trying to unravel why these things happen is amazing.Yes, the book is quite detailed, thoughtful, working often on a metaphoric level. It is a literary book. A memoir. It means to do that. There were times I wondered at the sheer level of detail, but as a reader and writer I also appreciated it: the writer was also quite clear on when she was imagining things (such as putting the killer's mother in a housedress of the style her own grandmother wore), and when she took information from sources she had seen. Other than the level of detail, which sometimes even put me off, and I generally like it, I have no complaints: this book was intelligently written, carefully and beautifully structured, and in the end, terribly human. I am in awe of this writer who could manage to stick with this investigation into the life of a man that most of us don't want to think of at all--a convicted pedophile and child killer. But here's the thing: if we stay silent (as some reviews have suggested), then other children get hurt. If we stay silent, we never have a hope of understanding how someone comes to do these terrible things, and without understanding that, how can we ever stop it? Certainly what we are doing now is not working--children are abused every day. Some of us have the strength and courage to eventually tell our own stories. And some, like this amazing author, have the courage to tell both her own story and the story of an abuser (welll, two in her case). I applaud her, and difficult as this book was for me to read--and it was--I feel I am further along on my journey of dealing with childhood sexual abuse from reading this book.Thank you to the author. You have really done something amazing with this book.

This book is stunning, shocking, beautifully written, and raises very difficult, very important questions about how to, as a victim and as a society in general, deal with the perpetrators of child abuse. They committed a horrible crime and at the same time are also - sometimes beloved - family members to someone, and often victims of crime themselves. There is no easy answer, but one way the law and afflicted families move on is by telling a story that emphasizes some aspects and neglects others. The book unravels the unfolding and the stark, painful consequences of this process by going back and forth through time and enmeshing two stories, one autobiographical, one based on a true crime case in Louisiana. I could not put down the book. The author has an amazing way of making the moment viscerally tangible, visible, even smellable, yet, through a writing style that seamlessly switches between acute immersion in the scene to a reflective and predictive "fly-over" perspective, connects each moment to its past and future at the same time.

Fascinating and elegantly written book. The author drives her story of child abuse and pedophilia from the perspective of both her personal experience with her uncle and the famous, true case of the murder of a child in Louisiana by Ricky Langley. Ms. Marzano-Lesnevich skilled writing as she moves between the 2 stories is never jarring and the kaleidoscope of pain that she uncovers is incredibly brave as she confronts her own abuse as a child. Her approach to the case of Langley is from her perspective as a lawyer on one hand and the sensitivity as a victim on he other.In some circles much as been made of the authors embellishment of the narrative. Ms. Marzano-Lesnevich has filled in, to some extent, the Langley case story where there was no court records but she has done so with great care and complete transparency so I did not find this problematic in the context of this book and the story she was telling. The unique perspective and artfulness she brings to the story as both attorney and victim is so compelling as to make these issues seem slight in comparison.

my kindergartener was struggling to use the tools available to beginner readers (e.g. picture clues and sounding out words), so I bought this set for more practice at home. The past couple of weeks, I have seen significant improvement at home, and her teacher reported this morning that she's also seen improvement at school. The stories are cute, interesting, and my kindergartener and I are enjoying them together.

I’m a school teacher and I wish they made these little box set for Every elementary reading level! These are SO great and they build your child’s confidence quick. This level is best for K-1st grade

The books are tiny (see pic) four pages each with about eight total, short sentences per book.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THESE FIRST LITTLE READERS!!! I thought I would have to hire a tutor for my granddaughter Brie. We have had this and The Level C Readers for a couple of months and Brie is reading everything in sight. Her confidence is on 💯. She reads these to me while I prepare dinner and clean the kitchen. Her teacher told me about similar, costing over 100 dollars these are just as good, again, just as good. Very well put together and easy handling for her.

I love these little readers by Liza Charlesworth; I use them as quick reading practice for the young students I tutor in kindergarten and first grade. However, these are a drop in writing quality. Nearly all books are the "repetitive" style where only a part of a sentence on each page is changed. It also places less emphasis on phonics and sight words. These do not have the level of difficulty I expected as a jump from level C to level D books. However I am still thankful for this resource, and the illustrations, compactness and high quality of these books cannot be beat.

I love these little readers. I have bought level a - d over the years and it helped my son get into reading. The books are only about 8 pages long so they don’t feel so intimidating for a new and unsure reader

These books are good for preschoolers learning to recognize words and read, but the quality isn’t great. I am disappointed because the spines of the books, as seen in the photo, are already coming apart, and my daughter has had them for 2 1/2 weeks.

Yes to this! I bought this for my nephew who has been struggling to read and he loves it. The night it came in he read two books. He felt so successful to find a look at his level. He was so excited he brought the books to school to read. He even read at school .. which he didnt like doing. I'm so happy. I will be purchasing more.

The print quality of the paperback is disappointing. Some pages are faint and the paper has a rough, recycled feel. I don't expect high quality from a trade paperback, but this one is below par. I would opt for the hardback if possible.

the recipes are easy to follow! the flavors are exotic but can be made with ingrediates from local suppermarkets.the book also gives a little history of the places you eat from. overall an excellent book

A very interesting cookbook for the serious African/African American cook or for the researcher of the native foods of Africa. There is a lot of compelling information in the book. But, I would rate this book from a cook's point of view as challenging. The presentation is beautiful, but you must have the resources and expertise to follow these instructions of many of the recipes.

I have looked through several African cookbooks - compilation volumes as well as books for countries and regions. This one has a good variety of dishes and regions represented. It also provides both well-known dishes and lesser-known dishes.

The book is a nice introduction to African cooking with hard to find senegalese recipes. However, the ethiopian selection is ridiculous, there are so many wonderful possibilites and yet she chose to include a recipe for raw beef with instructions that make it clear she knew very few if any readers would actually want to make this dish. That I found very disappointing.

For someone who enjoys digging in to cultural and ethnic recipes with a flourish - this one is great! I will throroughly enjoy mastering some of the essential tips that this cookbook includes. I will have fun exploring with my family - so you should too!

Great Book with so much charm. The recipes are awesome and exciting.

Use the f-word a little f-ing more. Because it’s the f-ing in thing now, you know what I f-ing mean?And I’m like, I f-ing know. I just didn’t know if you’d be f-ing into it.And she goes like. I’m f-ing into it John. We’ve gotta reach the kids. They’re the f-ing future.And I’m all like, Yeah, I f-ing know.Then she goes like, And put more silliness and Heartwarming Sentiment into the f-ing sex scenes, John. The kids really go for that. And it’s alright to end your book a little early with a cliffhanger. Don’t worry about the words. Nobody really cares about the words. And no one expects to be satisfied. That's like f-ing last century. We can sell more books, that way. Just like a TV series, make them hang on for a year. The heroine’s not going anywhere.And I'm like, Yeah, I know. TV is the f-ng future.And she’s all like, I’m glad you understand, John. This will be a great book!

I am not one to normally write a review, especially a negative one about an author I generally have warm feelings towards, however, this one merits a brief poor review (almost as brief as the book itself). My main issue with this book has to do with the value of it, for almost fourteen dollars I received a three hour read that felt at best incomplete. I am no speed reader by any means, at best I read at a slightly above average pace. A slow pace would have a reader finishing this in maybe six hours. At one point I checked on my e-reader how much of the book I had left as I was on the start of chapter 4, I had approximately 20% of the book read at that point. I enjoy the authors style often as it is rather direct and for me light on explaining science (I know, I know "science fiction") but it often is rather enjoyable as a space opera. However, if you are going that route creating such a short story is problematic, especially when it is priced so high for a kindle book. Many others felt this way about the first book in this series and while I saw their point this book only exacerbates this to an unholy degree. I hate to give such a negative review but when I finished it I felt like 1/3 of a book does not merit my time or money. I felt cheated.

He manipulated circumstances and characters to make his views appear not merely reasonable, but any other view custard-headed. He was one hell of a writer, and so I read everything he wrote, despite personally being custard-headed.These books by Mr Salzi are much more inclusive and even handed than that - or, for that matter this review. Mainly because Mr. Scalzi is a far better writer than I am.Science fiction is the literature of ideas. Those ideas come clothed in a good story. But, the best of science fiction asks us to think.I like thinking. That's why I like science fiction. If you don't like thinking, these may not be the right books for you.I think "The Consuming Fire" is going to be nominated for a Hugo. I hope it wins. And I hope the third book in the series is on Mr. Scalzi's writing schedule.

About the Author

Professor Donald C. O'Shea received his Ph.D. in Physics from Johns Hopkins and currently teaches at the Georgia Institute of Technology. A Fellow of the SPIE and the Optical Society of America (OSA), Professor O'Shea is currently the editor of Optical Engineering, the Journal of SPIE. He was awarded the Esther Hoffman Beller Award by OSA for "excellence in the field of optics education" in part for the Optics Discovery Kit he created for use in precollege education. His current research interest is the design, fabrication, and testing of diffractive optical elements, also known as binary optics. He is the co-inventor of a display system for low vision patients and has published more than 50 scientific publications. He is a consultant in the field of laser and optical system design.
