This book is so much fun! He made his first movie when he was a junior in high school, casting friends from school. His mom said "My house was a total studio..." A great story about a phenomenal filmmaker.

Well I liked the book but why no mention of 1941 at all?

This is a pretty good decent sized book about both Spielberg's life growing up and his most successful movies such as Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Jurrasic Park and Saving Private Ryan to name a few. There are some great colour photographs from the movies along with a lot of information. If you like the films he has done or are interested in his life then this would have to be one of the best books out there on that subject.

This is a beautiful little book. I enjoyed reading Ms. Rubin's text just as much as the photos. It reads more like a novel than a bio. including little known facts and personal interviews of his family and friends. She makes a point to illustrate the early influences of Steven's family and school life that later became themes for his movies. It is a very intimate look into Speilburg's personal and professional journey. Ms. Rubin has included many formerly unpublished photos. It all adds up to a wonderful read and certainly a lovely addition to your library, especially if you are a fan of Spielberg's work.

Great book for the 9-14 age group or anyone older looking for a light read. Lots and lots of interesting pictures of Spieberg's childhood, early career and blockbuster movies and behind-the-scene production. Well written and a high quality book.

I remember these stories as I grew up during this time . I was 10 yrs old at the end of the war. My mom, dad, uncles ,cousins , friends were all involved.My parents would go to the main highway in town and pick up G.I. hitch hikers and bring them home for some of my mom's home cooking. They would ,sometimes stay over night, and then the folks would take them toward their destination as far as our gas stamp allowance would allow. I did not see this kind of love of country when I came home from Viet Nam . I am sadden at our ," What is in it for me " attitude that prevails . Great stories and only wish we had that kind of spirit and love of the USA today .

It is infrequent that I stop my children and make them listen to me read from my personal reading books. We school our children at home. Home for us is the town of Entebbe in Uganda where my children have grown up as expats thus have had a disconnect from their country of origin. That said this book compelled me to share my own thoughts of admiration and gratitude with them so they too could feel connected to these heroes of our past. Often all they hear is MSN and Facebook chatter so this book starting some thought provoking conversations on the growth and sometimes decline of generations of Americans was wonderful. We discussed topics like racism, patriotism, internment camps, nuclear bombs, community service, honor, and sacrifice. Any book that can engage teens and parents in genuine dialogue about things that really matter is worth five stars.

Mr. Broken has captured the lives of all of the people in his book and brought them to the forefront for the current generation. It was a pleasure and an honor to read stories of courage and valor, both on the battlefield and in their future lives. This should be assigned reading for all American History courses as The Greatest Generation is slowly losing its members. My greatest honor was to be a guardian for the Honor Flight for WWII veterans to the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. The stories I heard during the flight were both humorous and tragic. Senator Robert Dole, one of the person's in the book was present to meet veterans as they arrived by bus to the memorial. This was great book, well written and very interesting.

Being a child of one of a member of the greatest generation this book gave me a better appreciation of all of that generation and what they did. There is nothing we can do to repay them for all the sacrifices that were made to ensure our freedom. It is so true that they never spoke about the war, my Dad never did. It was only after his passing did I discover from his military documents and newspaper clippings what transpired. I knew he had been wounded but nothing of the role he played. This book filled in all the gaps. Thank you Tom Brokaw for telling the story.

This was a fantastic read about a generation that is sadly soon to be gone from this earth, but certainly never forgotten. This book tells the story of many individuals who served their country, on and off, the battlefield. The overall message being a generation that gave everything, and expected nothing in return. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys history, and who admires tireless ambition, civic pride, and for those who simp!y care to learn the very values and attributes that brought about the best moments of the 20th century in The United States of America.

I first read Mr. Brokaw's sequel to this book--THE GREATEST GENERATION SPEAKS--and appreciated it so much that I really wanted toread his first book. So I ordered it from Amazon and am so glad I did. It is a wonderful testimony to the American way of life that did so muchfor our country and our people. We've lost that way of life, unfortunately, so I want to have this book to share with others, who can learn from itand live their lives better because of it.

This is the best and most meaningful book I have ever read. It captures a true sense of the struggles and unification of America during WWII. I am 42 years old and recall many stories as a child told by my grandparents and parents that mirror the struggles outlined in this book. Several in my family served in the military, including WWII, and I appreciate them so much more after reading this book. We take so much for granted today. I feel every generation, especially Millennials and Gen Z, can benefit greatly from reading this book. It will be a must read for my children when they are of an age to better understand and appreciate the information found in the book.

The author did a beautiful job of exploring the effects of WWII and how our fathers and uncles brothers and friends dealt with the effects. I was born during the War,but, had older sisters with friends that left to fights.And, not all returned. But, remember finding ration books, and leg makeup that they used. It was all very mysterious to me and had many questions. Reading the book made every question I asked much clearer.

Rarely do I write reviews, but this book deserves all the stars I can give it. I collect cookbooks, and whenever Phaidon releases a new one, I automatically purchase it. Although the books are always beautifully presented, the quality of the recipes can vary, and some of the books have practically no recipe notes at all (squinting at you, VEGAN).Fortunately for me, this cookbook checks all of my boxes. The presentation is gorgeous, with full-color photographs accompany every two or three recipes. Furthermore, there is a LOT of information about ingredients, preparation methods, meal presentation and cooking/serving equipment. You can really learn a lot just by paging through this volume, which is one of the most important qualities I look for in a cookbook.I would also note that this book is bound in such a way that it stays open on a cookbook stand, which is a huge help. It's a sizable tome, but not so thick that it won't fit in my stand. That may not be important to some, but it's nice to be able to use a cookbook without scraping up the bottoms of the pages as you wrestle the thing into your cookbook holder.So, final verdict: BUY IT. ::)

This book is great. Anyone looking for a gateway into Japanese cuisine should buy this immediately. Im a culinary student, and due to my mentors advice of "self study the cuisine you are interested in" I decided to specialize in Japanese cuisine. First of all this book is absolute beautiful. Stunningly so. Like honestly whoever designed this book needs a raise or a bonus or something. I honestly could go on about how wonderful this book is but I wont at risk of sounding like a paid reviewer. But seriously, just get it. I never write reviews but I would be doing the author of this book and any potential buyers a disservice if i didn't.I almost forgot one of my favorite parts of this book! It has the address of actual chefs in the back. Super cool feature for someone who is actually planning to move to japan and be a chef!Nancy Singleton Hachisu, ありがと. ほんとうにありがと.

I couldn't read this at Barnes and Noble because it was wrapped in plastic. It comes that way. I read reviews. I purchased cheaper than Barnes and knew I could return. I dunno about the translation or transfer of Japanese. I do know that it does discuss the very minimal basics of Japanese cooking such as dashi. It is a history lesson in the first dozen pages but come on, that's awesome. The print is DEFINITELY smaller than normal but I think that's because the book would be twice the size. Sure, the photos aren't labeled but you can figure out an egglant dish vs a salmon dish if you read the page with ingredient list and know what food looks like. Stress the "what food looks like" part. It's not a beginner cook book which I think is the problem most people have (especially the ones needing captions on the photos). I'm not upset I purchased it. It has easy and more skilled recipes but explains things with reference to another page if you don't know how to make the basics. Get it if you are familiar with cooking east Asian cuisine. Don't if you're still reading The Joy of Cooking.

This is one of the best written Japanese cookbooks I've come across. It is written with a foreign reader's unfamiliarity towards the cuisine in mind, so it explains what the dish is about, and ultimately how the author puts her twist on it or how she replaces certain ingredients to build flavour. And the recipes are 100% easy to follow. Useful for both professional chefs and home cooks.

I have just read The Art of Being a Healing Presence once again. This is my fourth reading over several years. I first discovered this book when doing some hospice volunteer work about seven years ago. It's a deceptively simple book--really more of a booklet, with a lot of distilled wisdom for care givers. Although the context of the book for me at the time was hospice, I've found the book personally beneficial outside that context. I highly recommend this book.Healing presence is defined in the booklet on page 12 as, "...the condition of being consciously and compassionately in the present moment with another or with others, believing in and affirming their potential for wholeness, wherever they are in life." Such a lovely definition.As an adjunct teacher at community college, a number of my students are non-traditional and face many personal challenges. On occasion, I have had to be a healing presence in their lives--at least as much as I can be in the role of a teacher, listening to their stories, sometimes tragic, offering them support and an affirming belief in their ability not only to endure but to thrive.The world desperately needs more people who can be a healing presence for others. Just by the fact that you are interested in this book says you are interested in being a healing presence in people's lives. Either in a professional capacity, or just as a friend to those in your personal life, you will encounter people broken in various ways seeking a return to wholeness. May you be that healing presence for them, and may you be blessed with healing presence in your life when you need it.

Had to read this for a class and found it to be very helpful with putting presence into words on how that actually looks in life. I was calmed by the ways in which it was written--very simple, yet powerful in the sense that the author trusted the reader to put themselves into the experience of just being and living that connected lifestyle. Some dissent toward the book was that it was a bit religious at some points, but the author makes sure to open up the ideas to say that whether you are religious or not, this book is about cultivating a human connection on that basic level. You get out of it what you are open to receiving.

I strongly recommend this book to people who are caring for those who can no longer take care of themselves. I also recommend this to caregivers and family members who are receiving help through Hospice.It is filled with wonderful quotes and straightforward methods of dealing with physical discomfort to spiritual togetherness. This book also helps one to see and experience the sacredness being in the presence of another human being, whether they are a family member, close friend and yes, even with a stranger.Let me leave you with one of the many different quotes in this book; "It takes two to speak the truth ....one to speak and one to hear" by Henry David Thoreau .... This book helps you learn to listen to the one in need of healing.

I was torn between giving this three or four stars but settled on three because sometimes the language got too intense for me—too deep in the psyche.But I will reread this book often because what is said is so true in my experience of successful relationships.

The authors present a warm and inviting call to service in the form of 15 concise steps towards an understanding of what it means to be a healing presence in a caring relationship. Each short chapter holds wisdom but always with grace. Their advice, based on years of experience, never comes across heavy-handed or pedantic. Much of what the authors have to say about healing and transformation deals with the relationship between our conscious being and our subconscious and unconscious being. There are two good reasons for this in my opinion. For one thing, this makes the book instructive for a wide range of care-givers because what the authors have to say applies regardless of the specific type of care we offer. Secondly, much of the healing process that occurs between people happens on the subconscious and unconscious levels. For music practitioners coming from a traditional performance background there is much wisdom to be gained from this book. To facilitate a healing presence with music we will learn to let go of those aspects of performing music that, while effective on a stage, may interfere with the healing process. To do this requires discipline and effort. The authors remind us that “we will be called upon to use our senses, our intuition, and our whole body in ways that perhaps are not yet fully developed. Yet the more we practice being completely present, the more natural it becomes. In the case of the music practitioner, even though we are there to play the music, I believe for an effective session we must also be listening with the listener and listening to them listening to us. Energy does not flow in a single direction. We are transmitter and receiver at the same time in an infinite feedback loop. By being sensitive to the cues we detect in the listener, our music will respond accordingly and adapt to best suit the needs of the listener.

This book was originally received as a gift from our Chief Nurse Executive. It has many encouraging passages which support the value of the nursing profession. I gave a copy to each of my students as they completed their final semester in nursing school. If they read just one page, I know they will realize how extraordinary they can become.

While taking a course to become a hospice volunteer this book was recommended for reading. It proved to be a very valuable guide and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of becoming a volunteer. There are some great lessons to be learned and a wonderful guide and is very thought provoking. It has given me a lot to think about when I sit with my patients and I hope to be of help to them because of reading this book.

What numbskull decided to leave out the color plates for the e-book edition? A book on this topic demands profuse illustration.Was it the same numbskull who formatted only some of the links to work? This is careless and sloppy, and limits the usefulness and convenience of an e-book.It was probably the same fool who built the index with no page numbers or locations.Is this really a professional book publisher?Though this book is not only informative but also illuminating, the exclusion of relevant illustrations make it a ripoff.The author's writing style is often irritating, with too many distracting incomplete sentences and an overabundance of gushing exclamations.

I bought this book as a companion to a recent (September 2013) visit to the Dordogne region. I knew about "cave art" but I did not know much more than the very basics. After reading this book I knew a whole lot more. In addition to describing the major caves in Les Eysies/Vezere Valley and the prehistorical/cultural context for the cave art, this book helped me appreciate the complexity of expression and "humanity" of the art in a quite modern sense. On a practical level, the book helped me plan a very nice two-day itinerary in Les Eysies/Vezere Valley. A big plus, when we toured the Font-de-Gaume cave our guide spoke no English - and I speak nearly no French - but since I had just re-read that chapter I was actually able to follow the guide's descriptions well enough.For what it's worth, this book is one of the few English language books that is on sale in *all* of the museum shops in the region.And, for anyone thinking of visiting the region it is absolutely awesome to stand in places with 50,000 years or more of human history under foot.

This must be a very difficult subject to write a book about because after several tries I haven't found one yet that hasn't been, as another reviewer said, overwhelmingly "dry or New Age". Having said that I think this is the best yet for someone like me who doesn't have an academic background in the field. It is certainly well written and eminently readable for the layman as an overview of the subject, but In the end it is disappointing.The real question the reader wants answered is "why" and, apparently so far, that answer is simply unknown. But that doesn't stop other authors from profoundly speculating.Thankfully this book does not focus on that type of guessing game. Ms. Desdemaines-Hugon does a very good job of sticking to what it is and not why it is.The problem however, it seems to me, based on what is actually known this is a subject for a book of illustrations, not page after page after page of text. If you haven't seen at least a copy the painting a glowing description of the "Mona Lisa", no matter how accurate, is a rather useless and frustrating experience. I found myself simultaneously ( and for the most part unsuccessfully ) searching other sources for some visual confirmation of the authors rapturous opinions.Bottom line, good but not great.

The author does an excellent job of conveying a sense of several particular caves in France, their art and the fascination it can hold. All without creating fiction. With this as an introduction, one will have a real framework in which to incorporate more narrow and fact-list types of work on the subject.Even more significantly, Desdemaines-Hugon is insightful and profound without projecting personal or cultural interpretations on the imagery or it's location (inside caves). Throughout the book, while questions and reflections flow, interpretations are notably absent. She consistently demonstrates a method of experiencing the place and the art with unassuming openess. Then in the last 3 pages she makes a concise and well supported statement, concluding, "What moves us today, whether for aesthetic or mystical reasons also touched these Paleolithic artists...Stylistic conventions, techniques, cultural motivations may vary over time, but . . . Beauty is spiritual." Some may disagree with that statement on the surface, but keep in mind I jumped from the middle to the end of 3 important pages. I recommend reading this book just for the broader implications of that idea and its fleshed out argument, as well as to enable one to avoid approaching Paleolithic art without a conceptual box in hand, looking for pieces that fit.

I was heading back to the caves in the Dordogne for a second look and someone suggested this book to me. I ordered it, thinking in the back of my mind that it in spite of my best intentions it would likely remain unread in the bookshelf because most books about rock art are either excruciatingly dry or dippy New Age. This book is neither. I read it bit by bit over about a week. The author has such a deep understanding and length of exposure to these treasures that she was able to create a real page turner. Her explanation of the context in which these works of art were created, and of the evoultion of our species, is a very valuable source.I could not recommend this book more highly and have ordered copies to give friends and family members who may never be able to experience these wonders first hand. This book is the next best thing.

I am thoroughly enjoying this book.The author, Christine Desdemaines-Hugon, writes in a fashion that is informative, but not above my head.She freely states this book is a "more like a story, than anything else" and that is what I was looking for, regarding ice age cave art.I am interested in an introduction, a basic understanding of the subject, and Ms. Desdemaines-Hugon provides that very well.I highly recommend the book.

We have enlighten so many copies of this added to the original,used as a daily prayer guide and also teaching guide for others and passed out and gave away more than I am able to count. A great asset to any Christian baby or old in faith. Again wish they still sold in stores as ours have literally fallen apart, and just a stack of papers. Glad I at least found this download able copy,but not the same as having a copy of it in front of me.

Anger, Death, Deliverance, Prosperity, Weight Control....and against many specific illnesses, like cancer etc. There is so much in this book. I have bought many and given away many, over the years. I wouldn't be without it!!

This is an excellent but somewhat dated non-fiction account of how the US could have begun colonizing Mars 2 decades ago within the existing NASA budgets and with technology existing at the time. I suspect that Andy Weir leaned heavily on Zubrin's work in writing his novel "The Martian" with one exception. Had he followed Zubrin's plan there would have been such redundancy that there would have been no crisis. :^). The book contains detailed technical work but is written so that lay people (even politicians and bureaucrats) can follow with little difficulty. "The Case for Mars" not only addresses the "how" we get to Mars but also the "why". Zubrin goes into some detail on how colonies can be built, farming can be done, fuel produced, mining and exporting of metals accomplished and, longer term, terraforming of the planet achieved. Keep your eye on Elon Musk - bet he has read this book and has set his sights on getting us to the Red Planed sooner than later.

Very articulate treatment of technical, technological, medical, economic, and political factors promoting and limiting pursuit of humanity's next true frontier-Mars. Author debunks politically motivated economic arguments against our next celestial outreach by showing clearly that we can begin to travel to and populate Mars AND make it moderately habitable with the technology we have now and have already paid to develop. Very exciting and layman friendly read.

I do not toss that kind of kudos around at all lightly, but Dr. Zubrin not only describes a very plausible and affordable means of reaching and ultimately colonizing the Red Planet, but in the Epilogue, gives a magnificent precis of WHY we MUST go! The very recent movie, The Martian, was very heavily based on the Mars Semi Direct mission, developed by Zubrin and his colleague, Baker. Modified somewhat by NASA scientists, this is realistically not just the best wayof getting there, but based on financial and political considerations, the ONLY way.

Forty years ago we last stepped foot on the Moon. Currently, with our occupation of the low-Earth orbit international space station, we are space residents. In the visionary Mission to Mars (National Geographic Society, 2013), moon-walker, space advocate, Gemini 12 and Apollo 11 astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, challenges us to take a further step and colonise Mars. Aldrin advocates bypassing the Moon and instead make progressive steps to mars via comets, asteroids and Mar’s moon Phobos. From Phobos astronauts using remote controlled robots will prepare the Mars landing site and habitats. Aldrin states that regular space travel to Mars would be too expensive with Apollo-style modular expendable components, instead favoring a gravity-powered spaceship cycling permanently between the Earth and Mars. Although strongly advocating for a US led enterprise Aldrin, thankfully, sees cooperation, rather than competition with China, Europe, Russia, India and Japan as being the way forward.Currently we have the Dutch company Mars One are recruiting people to be part of a permanent human settlement on Mars by 2023; the US commercial firm SpaceX have their Red Dragon proposal to put a sample-return mission to Mars by 2018 (seen as a necessary precursor by NASA to a human exploration); the Chinese have a long term plan for non-crewed flights to Mars by 2033 and crewed phase of missions to Mars during 2040-2060. This first-hand account is written by Roger Wiens, lead scientist for ChemCam - the laser zapping remote chemical analytical instrument onboard the rover Curiosity. It covers his involvement in robotic space exploration from his initiation in 1990 on the NASA Genesis probe to the joyous moment when Curiosity zapped its first rock in early 2013. If this piques your curiosity then the earlier Roving Mars: Spirit, Opportunity, and the exploration of the Red planet (Scribe, 2005) is well worth tracking down. For a more technical read on the settlement and exploration of Mars then Zubrin’s revised and updated The Case for Mars (Free press, 2011) and Marswalk One: first steps on a new planet (Praxis, 2005) by astronautical historian, writer and designers David Shayler, Andrew Salmon and Michael Shayler are also recommended. The authors and I seem to be kindred spirits. Since I approach topics from an engineering presoective, I loved the technical details and supporting arguments for one method over another. I also appreciated the insider view into the politics of space projects and the explanation of why we are where we are today with respect to going to Mars. I presupposed the moon should be our next spot for humans to take root, I am now convinced Mars not the moon should be our next frontier.

I truly enjoyed this book. If we used Zubrin's plan we could (using robots) find a source of water (probably salty brine) on Mars, and then electrolyze the water to produce hydrogen. Using the carbon dioxide in the martian atmosphere, along with the hydrogen, methane (a rocket fuel) could be produced on Mars. Martian rocks could then be collected--using the same type of rovers we use now. Then, an inexpensive (unfueled) delta rocket could be "shipped" to the martian surface where it could be fueled, loaded with Mars rocks and fired to attain trans-Earth injection. The next step would be sending humans to Mars, but (using Zubrin's in-situ propellant production methods) I believe we could gather martian rocks and ship them to Earth in the next 5 years using only robots.
