I had to read this for a course in graduate school and was very pleasantly surprised to learn the source of so many conventions regarding the printing of--and thinking about--books. Pettegree writes clearly and keeps things moving. The book looks imposing, but you can knock it off in a weekend. OK, maybe a long weekend. Wonderfully free of jargon, as well.

So as an amateur in this space of early books, I found this book to be just on the edge of okay for "intelligent non-specialist" and too simple for "specialist" in this domain. Makes it a challenging read, which I like. Pettegree is a fine author and writes quite well. But the KINDLE edition had no illustrations.... queer. (and I also have the hardcover, but I found reading the hardcover, when I'm now "trained" to kindle, as too awkward)But it's IRONIC that a book all about the rise of the codex technology applied to movable type and the social and business systems required to support the new high tech of the book world is crippled by having the pictures throughout missing because digital rights were not secured. (From perhaps old school libraries who think digital is going to let the proverbial Camel of Digital Theft into the Tent of the Bodleian?) This was MOST IRONIC when the text alongside the empty image frames was talking about how the art guilds in 15th C Germany were complaining about how the new tech of BOOKS was destroying the business of selling art prints.... new tech is often reviled by the old tech defenders. So reading an important book on the development of the book on a 21st century book stand (the kindle) is crippled by 19th century attitudes about copyright of 17th century libraries of originally uncopyrighted works of 15th century new book technology and presses...the image, well, it strikes me as they say "like turtles all the way down..."Same reactionary politics, different century. Humans! Buy this book. Read it.

A sweeping survey of the first 150 years of the European printed book ("book" here covers all printed texts including pamphlets and single leaf broadsides), from its invention by Gutenberg in 1450-55 to the end of the sixteenth century. During that time, printing spread from a single location in southern Germany to every corner of Europe and beyond, resulting in an estimated 350,000 different editions. The focus of the book is on the book as a business - "Printers were businessmen, and books were a commercial venture" (p. 129) - and, as the book progresses, on the Reformation (which resulted in an explosion of printing of Luther's pamphlets) and the subsequent wars, political conflicts and intrigues. Pettegree discusses what was printed, where and why; how the books were distributed and marketed, etc., tying this to the important historical and religious events of the sixteenth century. Along the way, he covers the expansion of printing to provide news and entertainment, the increase in printing in the vernacular, the birth of literary salons and women authors, the early printing of popular music, renaissance schools, emblem books, scientific works, botanical illustration, maps, printing in England, Scotland, Spain, Scandanavia, Eastern Europe, and Mexico, censorship and the Index, and a variety of other topics. Seemingly, nothing significant is omitted. In his analysis, Pettegree provides numerous important and new insights into the history of the early printed book. The book is dense with facts and specific examples. It includes many excellent illustrations of early printed books, including fine title pages. It contains extensive footnotes to sources, although unfortunately they are not at the bottom of pages of text, but at the back, indexed by page runs.Surprisingly, the author starts off the book with a significant error. He states that Gutenberg may have based his invention on the "model" of block books, short religious works in which both the text and images were printed from single woodcuts (p. 23). In fact, scholars have rejected the idea that block books were precursors of movable type books and have confirmed (through analysis of watermarks and owners' annotations) that virtually all surviving block books had been printed in the 1460s and later and none predate work on the Gutenberg Bible (1450). (See Allan Stevenson's "The Problem of the Blockbooks" and the other articles included in Blockbücher des Mittlealters, Gutenberg-Museum, Mainz (1991)). The illustrated "block book Bible" shown in fig. 4 and supposedly printed "c. 1430" actually is known as an "Apocalypse" and was printed c. 1465-70. The author also suggests that work on mechanical printing may have begun in the 1430s (p. 21), without mentioning that the early sources on which that is based are problematic and have been the subject of lengthy and inconclusive debate.Although I saw no other major errors, I did note a few minor ones. For example, type was inked using stuffed leather balls or pads with attached handles, and not "soft sponges" as the book states (Fig. 6). (See, e.g., Philip Gaskell, A New Introduction to Bibliography (1972), p. 126.) The statement that the sixteenth century Giunta printing business in Florence "was a branch office of the family's Venice business" (p. 254) is incorrect; the two businesses were separately formed in the fifteenth century by a pair of brothers from Florence and were independently operated by them and their respective heirs following distinct strategies, devotional works in Venice and humanistic works in Florence. Although the two businesses entered into several partnerships, "direct participation of the Florentine firm in partnership with the Giunti of Venice ended in 1517." (Pettas, The Giunti of Florence, p. 112.) The reference to "Bohemia (now the Czech Republic)" (p. 112) is awkward, seemingly suggesting that Bohemia simply changed its name; something like "Bohemia (roughly the western part of today's Czech Republic)" would have been more accurate. And, although he discusses Aldus' famous small octavo editions (p. 61), he neglects to mention that Aldus began their printing in 1501, leaving their chronology unclear to the reader.Notwithstanding these small imperfections, this is a major addition to the early history of the book and clearly the most comprehensive study (in English at least) of the inter-relation of sixteenth century printing with the Reformation and religious turmoil of that period Pettegree's work will be indispensable to those fields.

This book tells us not only how printing, the book trade, and book collecting evolved, but also demonstrates that the 15th- and 16th-century books are not the first publications of Greek and Roman classics and the writings of the Renaissance humanists, but the everyday textbooks and novels and schoolbooks that have not survived because, as the author says, "they were used to destruction." Real scholarship and a wonderful read!

Fine

Great survey of what happened when a new technology, the book, disrupted civilization. Very much like what digital is doing today, creating new industries while destroying old ones. Well written for the non-expert.

Fantastic book about the revolutionary changes wrought by the availability of cheaper books.

What I have learned from this well written book is that there is nothing new in the world of books and printing, and that all of the debate over ebooks was debated at the inception of printing. This book is very readable even though it imparts in depth information about the spread of printing. I also learned that good business practices had a lot to do with what got printed. It is an invaluable resource to anyone interested in the history of books. The book also arrived earlier than promised, which was nice.

The Streak: How Joe DiMaggio Became America's Hero, by Barb Rosenstock

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—Placed within the historical context of the last perfect baseball summer before America's involvement in World War II, Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak of 1941 becomes even more impressive. Rosenstock also captures the drama surrounding the feat: how a player from humble beginnings with hands that were used to hard work now held a bat, how DiMaggio named his bat "Betsy Ann" and only used it for games, and how the bat was stolen on the very day he was to break the previously held record. An occasional phrase in bold red type adds to the superhero quality of the story, while the slightly blurred acrylic illustrations make the characters seem as if they were captured in motion, creating a nostalgic effect. Detailed source notes, a lengthy bibliography, and lots of stats round out the presentation.—Joanna K. Fabicon, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist

Rosenstock cranks up the significance of DiMaggio’s as-yet-unbeaten 56-game hitting streak, in 1941. She does this through a dramatic season recap with the rising game numbers in red, and by taking note of the war tensions that heightened in parallel that summer. Joltin’ Joe’s game bat, nicknamed Betsy Ann, practically becomes another character, and the tale of its theft and recovery midcourse further raises the suspense. Widener, who has illustrated a number of picture books about great baseball players of the past, supplies green-and-gold acrylic action scenes featuring both the lanky batter and, often, contemporary newspaper headlines about the streak and the war. The author misses a beat by failing to mention that immediately after his streak was broken DiMaggio went on another one of 16 straight games, but more information can be found in her substantial historical essay and list of enough print and web resources to satisfy fans of any age. End notes document quotes. Was this the most perfect summer in baseball, as she claims? Could be. Grades K-3. --John Peters

This picture book was a fun and easy read. I also really enjoyed the illustrations. It is for anyone who wants to read and look at a quick account of Joe DiMaggio's 56 game streak of having at least one hit. That happened in 1941 and the record still stands today.

Quick and easy ready. Very short book as it was an assignment for school over the summer, and it was the shortest read. My sport enthusiastic son loved it and re-read it twice. He gives it all his thumbs up.

Perfect book for our 10 year old baseball playing Grandson. A bit of history mixed with the love for baseball!

it teaches you about is life and inspirational I recommend to read this I give it a 100 percent %

Wonderful illustrations.

Ms. Rosenstock has a gift for bringing out the magic in a "true story." If your child prefers "true books" to fiction, here is a winner for you! The suspense builds throughout the book, along with the summer heat, Dimaggio's stress, and the drumbeat of approaching entrance to WW2 for America. Your young reader will be fully engaged by the text, and then, there are the illustrations. Mr. Widener, you are the perfect illustrator for this book. I am a devoted baseball fan, and you managed to capture the feel of the stadiums, the games, everything, and made me feel a part of the action. For the grown-ups: the generation that knew that summer is fast passing away; a few months after the events recorded here, my late father would be on the USS Pennsylvania at Pearl Harbor on that horrible day. You will feel the pull on your heartstrings as you read this incredibly poignant, cheering, patriotic, baseball-loving book. I. Love. It.

Cute story for my grandson who loves baseball.

#8,019 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Two factors make Juror # 3 a far faster read than would be expected with a novel of 350-plus pages. One, the story is a fast-moving work of dialogue, told to us in first person. Two, less time is spent on fleshing out the characters. Both factors make this a fun, quick, easy read. Still, dependence on stereotypes to reduce time spent developing characters results in a tale that is more forgettable. It just doesn’t etch itself into my soul the way some great writers do.Although James Patterson is the lead author, I suspect co-author Nancy Allen had much more to do with the body of this story. At least, the voice that comes through sounds very unlike Patterson to my ears. My observation is not meant as criticism. In fact, it is a tribute to the fine writing of Allen. What I mean is that, unlike several of Patterson’s recent works, the writing here is much more evenly balanced and enticing.Initially, I thought of some works by John Grisham. I was concerned that Patterson might be trying to hone in on Grisham and, possibly, would be producing an inferior tale to ride on his coattails. But, as it turns out, Nancy Allen is a fine writer in her own right. Now that I’ve read one of her tales, I shall not hesitate to consider her next tale, with or without Patterson.POV: First person. The power of this story is the narrator. Look to the excerpt to see what I mean.BLUSH FACTOR: A moderate share of f-word profanities, so I advise you to read it to yourself first. Most folks will probably not choose to share this with their church prayer group or their children.EXCERPT‘…“You had a relationship with Jewel; I’m aware of that. I saw the pictures. How long had it been going on?”They had kept it secret, he told me. He would have been fired for certain, might have faced worse consequences. “Things haven’t changed all that much in Mississippi. You know that.”I nodded.“Me and Jewel, we got together whenever she felt like it. Almost always at the club. The first time, we were in the women’s restroom.”“When was that?”He stared off to the side as he tried to remember. “Six months ago, maybe? I’d been working at the club for a while, couple of months.”“Were your meetings always at the club?”“Sure. What were we going to do, walk into a movie together? In February, when it warmed up some, we started going to her daddy’s cabana by the pool. More private.” He grimaced, then said in a defensive tone, “It was casual. Just a woman having fun. I didn’t mind.”Oh, my Lord. There was in fact a sexual harassment angle to the tale, but I didn’t think I could sell it to a Mississippi jury.“So the relationship was casual—you mean, it was strictly physical? Not a romance?”“A romance? No, nothing like that. You don’t think she wanted to end up with me? Take me home to the family? That’s crazy.”“But it was her idea? For you to hook up?”“Always. I never pushed it. [expletive deleted]—never.”I was still trying to get my head around their dynamic; they were a mismatched pair, for sure, by Mississippi standards. “So she wanted sex. Okay—what was in it for you?”He gave me a look of disbelief. “Have you seen what she looked like?”I had. In her lifetime, she was a 9.5, at least.“And she had that charm thing going on. You know.”I knew what he was talking about. I’d been taken in by the “charm thing,” too.I asked: “So how’d you end up in the cabana the night of the Mardi Gras ball?”“She texted me. I asked to go on break. Once I got into the cabana and saw her lying there, I thought maybe she was drunk.”“Was that a possibility?”“Oh, yeah. But then I got closer. And I saw the blood.”I made a note; the blood was an issue we would have to tackle. “There was blood on you: on your jacket, your face, your hands. How’d it get there?”“When I listened to her chest, I guess. I was flipped out. But I tried CPR. I tried to help her, I swear I did.”“And then security came to the cabana?”He whispered: “[expletive deleted]…’Patterson, James. Juror #3 (Kindle Locations 410-431). Little, Brown and Company. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEAs I stated up front, this is a fun, fast read. If you’re looking for a pleasant escape with a hint of romance, “Juror # 3” could be the ideal tale of fiction. If you’re looking for something more deadly serious and thought-provoking, give that Woodward book, “Fear” a try. Better yet, do as I did: Get both. Read “Fear,” then follow it up with “Juror # 3” so you can sleep tonight.Four stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. With your help, my improvement will help you and me improve book reviews on Amazon. Together, you and I can build a great customer review process that helps everybody. Will you join me? It is people such as you who have helped me improve over the years. I'm still learning, and I have a great deal yet to learn. With your help, I'll improve every day.One request: Be respectful and courteous in your comments and emails to me. I will do likewise with you.Thank you so much for indicating if this review helped you, or for your comment.

Does not meet the expectation I have for previous works from this author. It’s lacking in sophistication from dialogue to plot. Usually, I keep hardcovers to share with friends and family who are avid readers. I’ll be donating this one ( I respect books too much to toss). It reads like a basic novel for beginners. If I was an educator, it would be a good example of how to loose your reader- it’s just boring. It lacks depth or intricacy, very disappointing on many levels.

I can’t believe I actually bought it! But I was desperate to read, and the snippet was a tad intriguing. But true to form, JP just throws his name on some other authors book and sells out. Dull, boring, poorly written, little intrigue. All around, just sad.

What I like most about this book is that although there are plot twists, nothing "comes out of left field". The protagonist is a wrong side of the tracks girl who sets and achieves her goals. She doesn't let others intimidate her and she accomplishes what she sets out to do.....admirably.

Easy read. The early pages suggest a terrific thriller ahead - but that promise is never kept. The book is a poor attempt to create a Grisham. It fails. Its lead character, a new lawyer, is ill-defined, poorly described, and not credible. Save your money.

I am grateful for the outstanding talents of James Patterson and now wish to express my appreciation for this introduction to another gifted writer … Nancy Allen ! I was engrossed in this book throughout and enjoyed that I could still find myself laughing out loud at times with rich characters and real expressions of feelings.I will definitely be looking forward to more Nancy Allen !

JP advertised that his book was John Grisham but better. True it was set in Mississippi but I know JG’s books and this was no JG. Two short stories, with a interesting heroine but little else.

Not what I’d expect from Patterson but he seems to beriding on his past successes and selling his “name”to co-authors. This one didn’t do him justice and I’ll avoid future books with this co-author. In fact, I’ll be more selective ofPatterson books in the future. What happened to my once favorite author??

I have taught "To Kill a Mockingbird" (TKAM) in my sophomore English classes for eleven years. This biography provided interesting insights into the life of Harper Lee, and I saw many connections to TKAM. For example, the fact that Mrs. Finch has passed away and is barely mentioned in the novel always perplexed me. After reading the book, I now know why. I also know why Nelle/Harper Lee originally planned to name the book "Atticus."The biography is a "must" for anyone teaching TKAM or anyone who just loves the book (count me for both).

The story of Nelle's life is almost as fascinating as Scouts' with so many parallels, it makes for a great read! Timely reading for me with her recent passing offered some valuable insights into her life and character. If you loved "To kill a mockingbird" this is a great follow-up, after you read "Go set a watchman" of course!!

Good info. Really enjoyed it.

One of my favorite books

Great for young readers of th e book, "to kill a mockingbird:. Great Read for all ages.

This, coupled with Mockingbird, is one of the best reference materials for a true Harper Lee scholar.

Thought it gave you good background as to the characters involved in To Kill a Mockingbird.

An interesting book to read. Nelle truly was an intelligent woman, but not without inward problems. Her childhood friend was only interested in himself and his fame in the literary world. They had astrange literary relationship - at times like fire and water. Apparently she was a one book authorwho couldn't restart her talent and follow up with others,

This book explains the basic mechanics of personal investments in a numerical way. It's not for readers who already know anything about investing for readers looking for emotional inspiration to invest.I can imagine this book being great for someone who works with figures and has inherited some money and wants to manage it wisely. It would have been helpful to me when I started my first job out of college and for the first time had extra money to invest. In an hour or two such a person could be totally up to speed on the basics of investing.I suspect most people will either a) be bored by the pages of text describing things like asset allocation examples or how rate fluctuations affect bond prices or b) find it very basic. OTOH, this might be a good gift for a numerically-minded graduate starting her first job. If such a person reads this book and really digests it, she will have the tools to invest responsibly in the good times and not freak out over the scary sound words and numbers reported during a recession.

Prior to reading this book I did not have much knowledge about the stock market. I wish it was a mandatory read when I was in high school or even in college , would have invested better. A MUST for all young kids. Very sell written and easy to comprehend.

This is such an amazing book, so much useful information about finance and how the world of business and stock market works. Will use knowledge gained to invest for retirement. Will recommend it to young people to get a head start with their finances.

Special Education and the Law: A Guide for Practitioners

Review

"The authors write dense legal material in a manner that enables the education practitioner to readily understand the applicable principles and procedures." Author: Dr. Karen L. Tichy, Associate Superintendent for Instruction and Special Education"Every administrator should have this manuscript in their professional library to guide them in making appropriate decisions in scheduling and meeting students’ needs." Author: Dr. Elizabeth Alvarez, Principal"Osborne and Russo have produced an ideal guide for educators working in the field of special education. The authors not only describe the legal rights of special education students, they also explain the legal constraints on disciplining students who are subject to the IDEA and the dispute resolution process for resolving disagreements about what services must be provided under special education law. All teachers and administrators working in the field of special education should have a copy of Osborne and Russo’s book on their bookshelves." Author: Richard Fossey, Paul Burdin Endowed Professor of Education"Some books are carefully placed on bookshelves and easily forgotten, while others sit on desks with their spines cracked and well worn from use. My copy of Osborne′s and Russo′s Third Edition of Special Education and the Law will soon be dog eared, highlighted in yellow, its margins scribbled with notes because it will be used. I teach school law and special education law and regularly work with colleagues in the schools. The Osborne & Russo third edition will be my go-to book for teaching and assisting with problems of practice in special education. Read it and you will use it." Author: Todd A. DeMitchell, Professor of Education Law & Justice Studies"Similar to past editions, these two well-regarded authors take extremely complex legal issues and explain them in a way that is easy to understand. The book examines several recent and important cases and covers the new guidance from the U.S. Department of Education on students with disabilities and athletics. The new chapter on Section 504 and the ADA is especially helpful. This book is indispensable for anyone working in the field. It will help parents, educators, academics, and policymakers gain a better understanding of the many legal requirements of special education law." Author: Suzanne E. Eckes, Associate Professor"The newest edition of Osborne and Russo’s Special Education and the Law provides indispensable information for those interested in understanding the legal complexities related to the provision of educational services to students with special needs and disabilities. One of the book’s primary contributions is its ability to increase the special education legal literacy of today’s educational practitioners, including school administrators, through engaging and readable legal case summaries on far-ranging special education legal compliance topics." Author: Kevin Brady, Associate Professor

This book is an atrocious combination of bad writing, poor layout, and an almost total lack of useful visual features like tables, diagrams, and charts to organize ideas. I could not believe how bad it was, compared to my old book.I had a similar course several years back, and my wife borrowed my old book to complement this poorly written tome. She put somewhere around 75 flags in my old book, while this one merited just three. There are much stronger books out there from Rothstein, Murdick, and Yell. You may also want a reference book like Wrightslaw.Avoid this horrible text at all costs.

This book is good with explaining how special education laws started and why they are important to students, families, and schools, etc. It also has sections in each chapter that answer commonly asked questions.

I'm happy to be building my Special Education resource Library!

This is a great source of law information - it highlights various circuit court cases to help shape interpretation while providing an easy reference for any practitioner. The book is in my bag whenever I go out to consult with schools.

This is a great overview of the many laws that can affect schooling for individuals with special needs. This is a good beginning to understanding the many facets of special education laws.

good parent book!

Great book!
