This long-overdue book is a new and refreshing approach to the subject of chopper motorcycles. It's the first book I've yet seen that tells the fascinating story of choppers based on extensive new and original research by its author, which includes personal interviews with hitherto little known yet important chopper old timers. He digs past the hearsay and the myths, and he avoids repeating any chopper cliches without first verifying that they are truly based on fact. Other books on this subject tend to be 90% glossy photos and 10% of text that is simply a re-hash of the same old re-cycled myths and legends. Paul D'Orleans here shows that the verifiable truth is at times quite different from the popular stereotypes of choppers and chopper people, yet the truth is no less fascinating than the distortions of legend. He uncovers some genuine new chopper heroes who have remained in almost complete obscurity, until now. The major innovators and the key technical developmental stages of choppers (e.g. the origin of an extender springer that actually handles) are revealed here for the first time. Paul gives the subject of chopper motorcycles the seriousness that it deserves as a valid field of motorcycle engineering, then sets it within its true context as a folk art form that is one of America's most significant cultural contributions to humankind during the 20th century. First let me say the cover is brilliant, but then you open the book.It is very well research and offers an unbiased account of the evolution of the chopper.The author does a good job sorting through the myths that have grown up around the "Biker" culture laying out good time line of the development of the custom motorcycle.There are incites and stories that I had never heard before and as a historical research document it is worth the money. If there ever was an example of why a great editor earns his money this is it, as this book is badly in need one. It appears to be a collection of blog post put together in a some what chronological order. Information is repeated, not always the same, making it read in a hit and miss manner. References to photos that are pages away or not in the book abound. Type face selection is really strange and the layout of the book is worse than any high school yearbook I have ever seen.The research and the photos make it worth the price,It is such a shame that so little thought went into the production of the book, it ends just being a collection of photos and facts, while lacking any soul.
This is one book that needs to be read as well as prominently displayed with your motorcycle memorabilia.

I would have gave the book a higher rating except for the fact that I feel the content and paper quality is not deserving of the high selling price. It's a decent book on the subject of Choppers, providing many pics and some history, but the book should be priced at about $25.00, max.
