Review
"This is a highly original work that covers battleships across the World's navies. The Line of Battle ship emerged as the principle naval weapon that was the key to naval engagements for some three hundred years. The steam powered successors were to last little more than 100 years and were replaced as THE capital ship by the aircraft carrier in WWII. Strongly Recommended." --FIRE Reviews"This book is no overnight concoction dreamed up at a publisher's blue-sky meeting to hit the lucrative Christmas wants lists of bathtub admirals. It is the subject of a protracted period of meticulous writing and editing that shines out from every page. If you are interested in the great capital ships, the people who desired them and gave them life, this book has everything you need. It is an absolute gem." --War History Online

I bought this book at a pre-publication discount, and I'm glad I didn't spend any more! The introduction explains that the book really isn't about battleships, but on the significance of particular fairly major warships -- battleships, armored cruisers, and coast defense ships -- to the social and economic situation of each individual country at the tine the ship was built. Each ship is discussed by an authoritative writer, so the book has some interest to a person interested in naval history. However, there seems to have been no attempt to create a common narrative. Also, much of the book is padded with outline operational histories of each ship, information that is mostly obtainable elsewhere. I was especially disappointed by the fact that, although the book was advertised as discussing shipboard organization -- the reason I bought it -- this discussion ranges from minimal to non-existent. I've read parts of the book, but I doubt I'll ever finish reading it.
Not the kind of book I read page for page, beginning to end.Rather it’s a stunning reference book for the evolution of the battleship from a hazy, broad concept of “what IS a battleship?†to the maturation of the concept and the machine we all love.
The book's subtitle best describes its contents: the lives and careers of twenty-one capital ships from the world's navy. Unfortunately, I only found this accurate title on the title page after I opened the book. The book is collected works and about half of the contents are about non-battleships: battlecruisers, armored cruisers and coastal defence ships. The ships covered in this book includeIronclad: Zhenyuan (18 pages) by Qing Feng;Pre-dreadnought: léna (20 pages) by Philippe Caresse, Slava (22 pages) by Sergei Vinogradov and Stephen McLaughlin;Dreadnought: Minas Geraes (24 pages) by João Roberto Martins Filho, Viribus Unitis (17 pages) by Lawrence Sondhaus, Alfonso XIII (22 pages) by Agustin Ramón RodrÃguez González;Super dreadnought: Almirante Latorre (21 pages) by Carlos Tromben Corbalán and Fernando Wilson Lazo, Nagato (21 pages) by Hans Lengerer and Lars Ahlberg;Battleship: Scharnhorst (19 pages) by Thomas Schmid, Littorio (16 pages) by Arrigo Velicogna, Missouri (25 pages) by Paul Stillwell;Battlecruiser: Yavuz Sultan Selim (19 pages) by Gökhan Atmaca, Australia (28 pages) by Richard Pelvin, Hood (28 pages) by Bruce Taylor;Armored cruiser: Garibaldi (15 pages) by Guillermo Andrés Oyarzábal, Georgios Averof (13 pages) by Zisis Fotakis;Coastal defence ship: Eidsvold (18 pages) by Jacob Borresen, Peder Skram (16 pages) by Tom Wismann, De Zeven Provinciën (17 pages) by Leon Homburg, Sverige (18 pages) by Ulf Sundberg, Väinämöinen (17 pages) by Jari Aromaa; The contents of the 440-page book are so diverse that each ship just receives about twenty pages. For those ships I am interested in, I didn’t find any new information or pictures. If you have other reference books on individual ships or ships of a country, you probably don’t need this book.
