About the Author

Tom Wolfe graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, served as a surface warfare officer in the navy, and completed tours of duty as a flag aide, communications officer, and administrative department head. He is a recognized expert in the field of career transition. Formerly a senior partner at Career Development Corporation, he provided guidance to separating military personnel for almost thirty years. There are many things I like about Tom's book. I think the most important is the amount of time that is spent on really getting to know the most important person in the transition: the military service member him/herself.I have been helping separating military members and veterans obtain employment for the past 18 years. The biggest frustration that I see is that too many jump ahead to writing resumes before they actually sit down and do the homework on themselves, employers, and the field they want to enter into. As a result, many quickly bounce out of their first post-military job and many continue to bounce the rest of their way through life. Laying the groundwork, knowing the territory and knowing what employers are looking for doesn't necessarily eliminate job bouncing, but it usually does.Oh, and the price is great too!

My thanks to all of you who helped make the First Edition of this book so successful, especially those of you who took the time to post all of the 5 Star reviews. The impetus behind the writing of the Second Edition, and the primary difference between the two editions, is Social Media, specifically its impact on career transition, networking, job hunting, and candidate sourcing.Looking forward to more reviews of the Second Edition. I STRONGLY recommend this book for: 1) those transitioning from military service to the civilian workforce, 2) student veterans, 3) recruiters, career services providers, and career coaches working with military-connected and veteran job seekers, and finally 4) ANYONE (civilian included) orchestrating a job or career transition. Wolfe has written the best, most thorough and yet concise book on the market. (MAKE SURE TO GET THE 2018 MOST UPDATED VERSION!) Using an economy of words, this right-size volume, with its no-nonsense typeface, design, and layout, is user-friendly; the reader can easily continue to utilize it for instructions and reference throughout the job preparation, hunt, interview, and negotiation process. I serve as a (civilian) advisor to military-connected students at an Ivy university, where the career advising department, and campus job fairs, are largely aimed at the critical masses (young traditional students with little more than a paper route, internship, and shiny new degree under their belt, but little life/work experience). Veterans feel like the square peg trying to fit into the round hole. They come with years of valuable skills, experiences, and accomplishments that ARE transferrable to the civilian workforce, but need to first be translated into "Civilianese". Transitioning comes with a multitude of anxieties about how to enter unfamiliar civilian territories and reestablish a sense of purpose. Most do not know how to begin this process--they may not know what they want because they are unfamiliar with their options, and how they may or may not be qualified for them. Wolfe addresses every common anxiety by providing clear information, strategies and action items to demystify the terrain and map the path and process toward success. Self-assessments, military versus civilian vocabulary, resume construction, online profiles, networking, researching companies, body language, stereotypes, interview etiquette, salary negotiation--strategies for all the expectations of a civilian job hunt are spelled out. Job seekers utilizing this information-rich and valuable volume should experience significantly reduced anxiety while ultimately establishing more personally-satisfying and lucrative career and job options. Those working with military-connected and veteran job seekers will also benefit immensely. Skip this book at your own risk!

We all know that it's very challenging for our Veteran community to transition from a military career to a civilian one. Tom's book not only helps prevent unemployment, but also prevents "under-employment", which is a serious problem for our Vets. Out of Uniform teaches our transitioning Service Members, retired Veterans and Reservists to take the best steps toward meaningful employment. He is a Veteran, and deeply understands the civilian-side hiring world, which is so critical. It's filled with easy-to-digest, useful and actionable information. This book is an outstanding resource for transitioning service-members and should be the first thing one reads when either considering separating or planning the upcoming transition. I only recently found it while deep in my own transition planning. Even though I feel as though I'm doing well in the process, I would have benefited greatly from Mr. Wolfe's insights months ago. This book is the only resource I've found (from other transition books, conversations with JMO recruiters, TGPS/TAPS, and networking) that hasn't left me questioning any of it's arguments or advice. Further, it compiles much of the practical advice and knowledge that you might figure out along the way into one source. I can't say enough about this book - it's now my go-to recommendation for transition reading!

Tom Wolfe distills his many years of experience advising separating military how to find their place in the civilian workforce. The book covers every aspect of the job hunt from figuring out what kind of position you want, how to translate your military skills into language that civilian employers understand, writing a resume, interviewing and more. The book is brief, well written, and provides a clear road map to a successful transition to the civilian economy.
