Great book. Can't be beat for the backyard birdied. Was a gift for a young family.
I took a college class in which I needed to identify birds, and we were all told to buy a "bird guide" but given no specifics as to which one. I chose this one.My classmates came with a wide variety of bird identification guides, and this one was by far easier to use. The color photos are nice.My professor looked through all of the different guides and preferred this one.
I have a few books from the audubon society, and they are all great quality. The pictures are well done, and in my opinion, the organization makes as much sense as any other field guide. I also like that iconic audubon society cover material. The size and shape are nice. Compared to other guides I've had, this one is a bit thicker, in terms of number of pages, but a bit narrower in terms of spine to tip of page. It makes it fit in my glove box a little bit better, but I could easily see preferring it the other way around.I'm a novice with birds, and so I can't speak to the accuracy, but so far anything I've looked up in a second source (Sibley), or happened to know already has been spot on. The main difference between this and Sibley's is pictures vs drawings. I prefer the pictures, but I understand the benefit of the drawing for getting a look at sort of the "archetypal" version of the bird. It's preference as much as anything else. Go with whichever you think you'd like better.
One of the best bird identification books out there. The beautiful photos alone are worth the purchase. The descriptions are very clear and it was the first time we were able to identify some specific species of birds that are so closely related to one another. Now instead of saying, "I saw a hawk," I can say, "I saw a zone-tailed hawk."

For those of you who are already experienced bird-watchers, however, this may just be the one for you.I recently bought this book because I rather enjoy learning about birds, and I thought this would perhaps be a good place to start. While I do enjoy the vast amount of information included in this book, it is difficult to find a starting place as a beginner. The idea behind this book is that it is easier to identify birds for those who know what they're looking for. You see a bird, you search for a particular section of birds similar to the one being identified, and you narrow it down from there. Seem a little confusing? I thought so too.For other beginners such as myself, perhaps a better book would be one that teaches the basics of birdwatching. This book is just a little dense, and packs a lot of information. The only real way to get into it from here is to pick a page, and try to memorize what you can about each individual bird. They have some graphs in the beginning that try to explain things, but as I said previously, it does happen to be a dense book.Overall, I give it a 3/5. Lots of information with clear and crisp pictures of each individual bird.
I ordered this as a thank you gift for a friend. He is just thrilled and tickled pink with the beautiful pictures. He's a camp host, a new environment for him and ample birds to watch. He shared it with a bird watching friend, who was also impressed with all the information and pictures the book offers. Thank you, Amazon, for making it easier for me to make someone so happy.
I have used a copy of this book for quite a few years. I use it in conjunction with a couple other bird books, since it can be difficult to identify a bird from one resource alone. So, when an occasion arose to buy a bird book for a gift, this was the one I chose. The clear photographs and in-depth written descriptions, plus info on habitat, range, etc. make it very helpful. I also like the soft leather-like cover.
Very informative and one of the best bird references I have found. The photographs of all the birds are real life photos. Absolutely beautiful. The birds are separated by category. I love birds and there are so many of them, actually some are so much alike that at times it may be hard to identify them because of their similar markings.For instance there are several tree climbing birds. One we are all familiar with is the wood pecker but did you know there are several that look like wood peckers but are not. There is the Nothern Gilded Flicker and the Williamson's Sapsucker. They are similar with their spots and red markings on their heads.In this book the information on each bird is detailed which includes the description, Voice, Habitat, Nesting, Range, and characteristics. Very informative book and a great reference for the shelf.
