This excellent resource should be required reading for every medical student and all those working in the fields of primary care, oncology, hospice and palliative care. It teaches the fundamentals of good communication, which includes exercises for listening, a concept almost foreign in our current healthcare culture where providers are pressured to see more patients in less time. This is my new go-to reference and is currently at the top of my recommended reads.Thank you Drs Back, Arnold and Tulsky.

Communicating serious news and dealing with end-of-life issues are poorly taught in medical school, but something that is constantly present in practice. This book is a quick read, but a great resource in how to have those discussions go well. As we are constantly dealing with death, we easily forget how new, personal and foreign a serious situation is to the individual patient we see. This book walks through discussions about breaking serious news, giving a prognosis, to discussing code status while being mindful of where the patient is at. I can't advocate this enough as needing to be a book in every doctor's library.

Plain language, insightful recommendations, easy to follow and interesting to read, this book offers quality information on how to successfully (and less stressfully) have conversations about difficult topics with patients and family members. It also offers very practical and duplicatable methods to train yourself to think and feel differently about challenging situations. Although it was written by MDs for MDs, it is highly applicable to RNs and ANPs. It is also a relatively short book; it does not go into theories and other sometimes interesting, but always long-winded scholarly literature like most nursing education. It is a refreshing change.

As a hospital chaplain, I wish EVERY doctor would read this book and put into practice its excellent techniques. The book is easy to follow and models in its style, the clear and helpful communication a doctor can provide if you take the time to learn to talk this way. In the long run, quality communication can save time and money, give patients truly INFORMED consent, prevent futile treatment and improve quality of life for patients and their families, especially those facing end of life. I see so many doctors fail their patients because they don't know how to talk in a way patients can understand. This book helps you identify how much information a patient wants about their disease, their treatment,their prognosis and how to help them trust YOU. One size does not fit all and this helps you fit your conversation to the individual patient.I was privileged just this week to be a family member in a consultation with a doctor who used these techniques and it inspired such confidence in that doctor from all of my family. You will be a better doctor and your patients will feel better about you and more confident about their ability to make good decisions for themselves if you follow these guidelines--it will probably even improve your outcomes and patient satisfaction scores.It's a quick read with good skill practice exercises. Do it for yourself and for your patients, their families and the support staff who are left to pick up the pieces if you don't learn to communicate well.If you bothered to spend all the time and money going to medical school, invest a few hours in reading this book. It will be as valuable as anything else you learned in your training.

I am a physician who has practiced Emergency Medicine for over 25 years. I am in the process of transitioning into the sub specialty of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. This book, and the skills it describes, are critically important to providers who frequently deliver "serious news" to their patients and to the families of their patients. The communication skills explained inside the cover of this book were never taught to me during my medical education. I will revisit this publication often as I attempt to implement these techniques into my own clinical practice.

This is a massive hybrid work that tells the personal human story of the Revolutionary Soviet elite. The book is centered around the story of the massive housing complex in Moscow built for the elite around the time of the first five-year plan (around 1930). But the book doesn't limit itself to that scope. It looks both forward and back at the lives of those who lived there. One of the very best parts of the book is the coverage of these people's lives *before* the 1917 revolution.The book is difficult to classify as a work. What makes it so interesting is that it able to be many things at the same time. Its a grand literary narrative of a large set of people in war and peace. Its a cultural and political history. It attempts to study and draw conclusions about a political system based on close study of those who led that system. It has grand diversions into literature, religion, russian intellectual history and all sorts of other matters. Its length and its tendency to cross so many traditional lines makes it exceptionally interesting but difficult to review. Its a book that could be reviewed in many different ways.The book humanizes and explains the old party members better than any other work I can think of. He presents the revolutionaries as a millenarian movement of true believers. The old world was going to end and they were going to build paradise. One of the great strengths of the book is that it is a showcase in the difficulties involved in building a utopia. The pre-revolutionary strengths of the movement immediately turned into weaknesses once the Civil War was over.They promised more than any revolution could deliver. Their stark dualist philosophy and discipline, which served them well as an underground movement, failed them once in power. The movement lacked any capacity to operate in a democratic fashion. It had no ability to accept dissent. Worst of all, the whole system was built on a lie. The lie that the revolution had brought utopia. Rather than being the product of one ruthless man, Stalinism seems within the context of the book to be the inevitable outcome of the system. If not Stalin, one of the others would inevitably have done something very similar.The impression I got from the book was that for all the evils of Stalinism, the country might have suffered even more if the revolutionary far left had come to power. Where they were different is that they really believed in abolishing the entire existing structure of life. They wanted to sweep away marriage, children and family life. The author's religious analogy actually works in this case in that if their ideas had been implemented, it would have been like throwing the entire country into a monastery. Everyone would have been put in Monk's cells with everything being communal. Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge came closest to actually making that model real with all the well-known consequences. I came away seeing more clearly what a dramatic change Lenin's NEP was for the true revolutionary faithful and how it created splits within the party that were eventually only resolved through the purge trials.There are parts of the book that tend toward excess. Everything in the book is interesting, but not everything advances the core narrative of the book. There is a difference between telling a story and presenting an archive of material. His fault is tending on occasion toward the latter.I don't think the book is too long for the tale it tells, The problem is more that the "tree" needed to be pruned. The narrative needed to be tightened up. At certain points in the book, someone needed to ask how certain material was advancing the narrative. But the book is so good and the material on many occasions so interesting that I find it difficult to fault it much. Certain matters should have been included in perhaps extended appendix sections where they could stand alone as diversions into topics rather than interruptions of the narrative.This is not a "light" read. Its incredibly long. Its very dense. It expects a great degree of familiarity with Russian and Soviet history in all its aspects (political, historical, religious, cultural, literary, intellectual and more...) I personally found it very rewarding as a read. But reading it is a commitment and its not going to be for everyone. Its also not a comprehensive picture of Soviet society. Its narrowly focused on life at the very top of society and tending toward the stories of the true-believer party members.What the book ultimately was to me was the story of a political tragedy. It showed how the organization of a political movement and its ideology out of power impacts its ability to rule once in power. It shows very clearly the price of fanaticism and ruthlessness in politics. As well, it shows how important it is for a political elite to believe in the system they are running. The book shows quite well how the pre-revolutionary dedication to the political vision died out after the first generation.Again. This is a book that requires a large amount of knowledge going in and a commitment on the part of the reader. It will not be for everyone.

The hegemonic Marxist ideology was based on the basic fallacy that changing material conditions will produce a new kind of humans: “Focused on political economy and ‘base’-derived sociology, Marxism developed a remarkably flat conception of human nature. A revolution in property relations was the only necessary condition for a revolution in human hearts.” (p. 952).5. Therefore, unavoidably, “Bolshevism, unlike Christianity, Islam, and a few other millenarianisms, was a one-generation phenomenon” (p. 943).This book is essential reading for all interested in the history of the Soviet Union and of radical revolutions in general. But its importance is broader: Humankind is moving into a new epoch characterized, inter alia, by novel modes of production. But these by themselves will not change main propensities imprinted genetically on our species. This dissonance is likely to disrupt societies, creating “revolutionary” situations. My impression is that “putting books to the test of life and putting life to the test of books” (p. 129) will show that contemporary humanity is totally unprepared for this emerging challenge. The names of the deities are pretty much the SAME in the OTHER version of TBOtD I have... but many of the SECONDARY deities and their CONSORTS have TOTALLY different names... and I wanted to know how to SPELL the words he is using! Glad I looked INTO it and didn't just say "OH WELL... that's the way it GOES!" Thanks Amazon!!!!

This is an easy-to-understand translation of what we know in the West as "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" with a clear commentary, showing how the work, originally intended and still used to guide people through the process of dying, can also be used by anyone seeking spiritual understanding. It shows the "bardo's". the states and visions between death and a new life. Enlightenment (escape from the "wheel of rebirth") can be attained at any stage by someone being guided through these states, but does not always happen! In other words, the work includes the belief in rebirth/reincarnation, common to Eastern philosophy and more common now than it was - in the West.

I've worn out several copies of the Tibetan Book of the Dead - and many have 'disappeared' from my shelf. *smile*When I was attending shamanic training, this book was used as a 'textbook' for a two-year course on "conscious deathing".I love Chogyam Trungpa's commentary. When I lived in Boulder (early 1970's), he lived next door while creating Naropa Institute, and I often attended his lectures. It's good to 'see' him again.

I recommend this book to everyone of every religion. A true guide for living compassionately with the rest of humanity, within these pages are found SoulFood for our world.

As with most books written by Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, he gives a different view of this most cherished book.

Here Todd Gongwer takes a simple message wrapped around an interesting story where I found myself in the story at times. How the characters reacted or philosophies they adopted mimicked leadership styles I have used and served under. I can see why this book wins high praise from coaches and leaders in team sports, but it's just as applicable to a single parent, student or office worker. Why? Because we all have a purpose, and finding it is the right first step to moving forward. That's what God wants for all of us.

I heard about this book reading an article in the Canton Repository about the impact this book had on Urban Meyer. Urban Meyer is the head coach at Ohio State and while he had achieved the pinnacle of success as coach at Florida he found he needed to let it go for his health and his family. While reading the book in his year off as an ESPN analyst he rediscovered the real reason for coaching and you can see with the Buckeyes he is now coaching from the heart. I think this book is a tremendous resource that distills the core of leadership which is about which is helping people find their purpose and take action to make a difference in the world. By focusing on the journey instead of the destination you can overcome adversity and make the most of each day.

This little Lenten book is a perfect companion for teens. Each reflection uses relatable situations and real examples that middle and high schoolers can apply to their own lives. The short reflection is followed by doable challenges, like a question to think about or a short goal for prayer, as well as a more challenging growth opportunity, such as reading a Bible passage and journaling or scheduling a time for Confession. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of English translation. I was very annoyed with the Russian original: misspelled, typos are quite common. If somebody is learning Russian and tries to find a word in a dictionary, with the kind of spelling I found in this Russian text the chances are the word will never be found. Russian text is poorly formatted.The idea of the book is fantastic, the selection of stories is good, quality of the articles about the writers is excellent.The Russian text has to be fixed.

I have had problems with the Kindle editions of other books with non-standard page layout, so I I ordered this in the expectation that I would be somehow disappointed in the experience. I just wanted to see how close an e-edition could come to the hardcopy ideal of facing-page layout. I think there is probably a solution to the bilingual facing-page tradition in kindle editions, but no one in the kindle display coding factory has figured it out yet. The best thing I can say is that if your primary goal is learning the language, flipping a couple of pages forward to check the English translation before jumping back to the Russian is annoying in the extreme, but not absolutely fatal to the learning experience.On a larger tablet screen, maybe the books could be displayed in top and bottom panels; I don't think side by side columns would work, but there might be hope for a tablet held in landscape mode. (I haven't looked into the full-screen on-line reader app because I don't read books that way.) On a small Kindle screen, even the new larger Oasis, there just isn't enough display space to do what needs to be done.

A great compilation of all the major well-known middle-through-high-school level Russian stories. I would not recommend it for someone trying to learn (modern) Russian though. The language used in these stories is way too complicated for a novice or even an advanced level Russian speaker. Certain words are obsolete and extremely hard to understand since they're completely eradicated from everyday use. And simply relying on the accompanying translation is not really effective. I found quite a few inaccuracies there; editors didn't really do a thorough job editing...I guess, the verdict is as follows: if you're looking to learn Russian, move on and choose something more appropriate; this book will only mess up your existing knowledge.As a native speaker, I just read it for fun and joy of correcting bungled translation....

My first experience with a dual-language book was an English-German dual language "Faust" many years ago. At that point I realised the effectiveness of this methodology.Many years after, having reached the intermediate level of Russian, I decided to get a dual language book as I did in German and I found this one. My experience shows that half of the language books in the market are just useless or of little use. So I was not sure about getting it, until I noticed that it is a Dover book and I have very good experiences with Dover books (for example Brian Kemple-Essentials of Russian Grammar). So I got it.What I like most about this book are as follows:* You can see the exact translation of every Russian word and phrase so no need to use a dictionary. This is a real comfort if you don't like to keep on searching over a dictionary for unknown words .* You read the masters. This is very motivating. If you learn Russian and if you can read Pushkin in its original, this is a real reward.* Intros are quite good. You can learn new facts about the great Russian authors, who set the foundations of one of the world's most fascinating literature.So I recommend this book to anyone who wants to master in Russian language. However, a little remark, this text is not very elementary. I would suggest that you first get the basics and then work on this book.

Excellent learning tool.1) Accents are in the book. This helps pronounce the words. Other series do not have this.2) The translation nicely follows sentence by sentence, it does not abstract. This allows for checking your attempts much easier than a loose translation.Not much else to say, really. The stories are surely great but that is hardly the point of the book.

This is a reprint of a book from a series of bilingual readers that that first came out under Bantam Publishers in the 1960's. It was out of print, then Dover did what it does best: It bought the rights to "Russian Stories" and made it available to a whole new generation of intermediate-to-advanced language learners. In line with the other books in the series, it presents the original text on the left side with a good translation into English on the right page. (One of its sister-books, "First German Reader," is how I initially made the jump from being a beginner to becoming eventually fluent in that language.) "Russian Stories" brings you selections from masters of Russian prose, such as Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Chekhov, as well as more recent authors. It even gives the reader advice on which order in which to read the stories, starting from the easiest and progressing to more difficult texts. If you want to read real Russian literature--not simplified versions or textbook anecdotes--this is the place to begin.

I was happy to come across this as it's one of the only digital books to have stress marks in Russian. However, there are A LOT of typos and misplaced stresses. Also, students of Russian language should be forewarned that many of the Russian words and expressions are dated and 'literary' - not used in contemporary colloquial language. This is ideal for passionate readers of Russian literature, but less so for those who seek mastery of conversational Russian.

It's tough to find these. Most are of questionable quality. I like this particular book because the translated stories are from Russian authors my Ukrainian / Russian students will be familiar with. It helps give a sense of English when viewed side-by-side, and familiar works for the student, help.

I'm a bit confused by this book because it seems to leave out parts of Scotland. Where's Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire? The West Coast? The Lowlands? The Outer Hebrides? There seems to be a lot of good information overall, but as we have tentative plans to visit Aberdeen, this is a problem. Nothing about Findhorn, either. Well, it's a start. But just know that it's not comprehensive.UPDATE: We've been finalizing plans for our trip and this book seems even less useful than I'd thought. He mentions two ghost tour operators in Edinburgh; there are several. Speyside Whisky Trail? Steves mentions Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. And that's it, though this area has half of the distilleries in Scotland. I think "Rick Steves Scotland" literally means where Rick Steves went when he was in Scotland. Try Lonely Planet for more comprehensive info. Oh, and Balmoral Castle, which Steves suggests visiting is closed right now.

Loving this book. I'm reading it straight through, though also skipping to more indepth discussions as appropriate. We are headed to Scotland in 2019, and I cannot imagine a better way to prepare for the trip. Rick's writing is highly readable, packed with information and often humorous. It's easy to tell that he has visited these sites personally, more than once, and has so many good tips and suggestions to share. I feel as if I'm on one of his tours already. I think what I love most about this book is that it is so down to earth. Rick is enthusiastic as all get out when he thinks it's appropriate, but he's never gushy. He just tells it like it is. He also allows for the fact that travelers are not all alike. Some are foodies, some can't live without air conditioning, some go for the adventure, others for the education. Throughout the book, he demonstrates great respect for these and other differences, and offers something for everyone. My only disappointment is that there are not color pictures, but I understand the challenge with the thinner paper the book is printed on. This thin paper makes page turning easy, though, and also keeps the weight of the book from being overbearing--and that's a good thing! I definitely recommend this book for a thorough, insightful look at Scotland--and reading it makes me wish I could pack up today and take off!

We just got back from a week in Scotland, three days in Edinburgh and the rest in the Highlands (Glencoe). Rick's book was invaluable. Our travelling style fits Rick's: we like to walk around cities, we like to be independent, and we are frugal. With a Rick Steves book, you don't need tours, and you don't really need guides. In Edinburgh, we found our lodging through AirBnB, but Rick's listings for Glencoe B&Bs were helpful. Rick's sections on the history of Scotland were good to read. His advice throughout is extremely practical.We followed Rick's advice and just tore out the sections of the book that covered where we are going. Now that we are home, we put the book back together, and will keep it for what will hopefully be another trip to Scotland.

I got my guide just a couple of days before my month-long trip so it was too late to return it when I found that the first 46 pages were missing on how to get prepared for my trip! The book starts at page 47 and then repeats the section for some reason with no pages 1-46!The parts of the guide I used were good. He focuses a lot on the city info and not as much on the Highlands and places north I visited but the entire book (that I had) included Rick's humor and slant on things so was still fun to read in parts.

Thanks to Rick's thoroughly researched travel experiences this book logically will enhance our trip to Scotland this May. He has walking tours, driving tours, even a free app to use while abroad. I eagerly waited for this latest 2018 edition, and it is not disappointing. He brings history in nooks and crannies into modern enjoyment while site seeing. He has itineraries for not only the main land, but the islands too! He gave us an exemplary trip to Ireland this past September, using his Ireland book. Now to Scotland!!

Very helpful, I purchased a few books while waiting for this one to become available, Rick’s was the most current and practical of all of them!Highly recommend. We loved Iceland, we travel with 3 generations, 3 grands, 2 parents and 2 girls (4&8), his recommendations for hikes, sites, food and lodging were spot on.Be sure and read his description of driving and roundabouts befor setting off in your rental car

I see what people are talking about with the page numbering BUT in comparing the Kindle edition to the current print edition they have the same information. The page that is shown as p.44 in my Kindle edition is not numbered in the print edition and comes right before p.1 altho there are maps in the book (and e-edition) before that. What shows as pages 261/266/273 in my Kindle is actually all contained on p.14 in the print book. I have not gone page by page after that but randomly flipped thru and don't see any information that is missing. YMMV.I do get the print edition for planning purposes and download the Kindle version to the Kindle app on my iPad for actual travel. This is the standard RS guidebook. Good information, well presented, easy to flip thru as needed before and during travel.

I don't travel without having read Steve's books. He reveals areas in foreign countries one would not find, reveals good places to eat and stay. He gives the reader and future traveller insight into a foreign currency and world which are extremely helpful and my favorite part is the history he opens up to a new place.

Very disappointed to find this unauthentic. Not the original translation at all, but another bird altogether. Compare, The first sentences starting just below "The ancient Chief..." in this book says ..."blew his shell, sounding like the lions roar;of which make the reader think the conch shell sound is as though a lion's roar, (which is not accurate, as its the voice of the Ancient chief which is like the roar) the authentic Wilkins work says "Shouting with a voice like a roaring lion, blew his shell * to raise the spirits..." Totally transposed is this work, yet another translation by someone?? It might be fine, even more true to the original Sanskrit,, but its just not the Wilkins translation.
